ABSTRACT Objective Iron deficiency and vitamin A deficiency are two of the main micronutrient deficiencies. Both micronutrients are essential for human life and children's development. This study aimed to investigate the effects of vitamin A deficiency on ferritin and transferrin receptors' expression and its relationship with iron deficiency. Methods Five diets with different vitamin A-to-iron ratios were given to thirty five 21-day-old male Wistar rats (separated in groups of seven animals each). The animals received the diet for six weeks before being euthanized. Serum iron and retinol levels were measured as biochemical parameters. Their duodenums, spleens, and livers were analyzed for the expression of ferritin and transferrin receptors by Western Blotting. Results Regarding biochemical parameters, the results show that when both vitamin A and iron are insufficient, the serum iron content (74.74µg/dL) is significantly lower than the control group (255.86µg/dL). The results also show that vitamin A deficiency does not influence the expression of the transferrin receptor, but only of the ferritin one. Conclusion Vitamin A deficiency regulates the expression of ferritin in young male Wistar rats.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the antiarthritic activity of Glycine max seeds in adjuvant induced arthritis in rats. Antiarthritic activity was assessed based on the paw volume, biochemical parameters, haematological parameters and histological parameters. The changes in the above said parameters were reversed by the G.max seed extract administered at the dose of 60 mg/kg orally. Hence further detailed investigation is required to isolate the compound responsible for the antiarthritic activity

The present study was aimed to investigate the antioxidant activity ofFicus caricastem extract (FE) in methanol-induced hepatotoxicity in male Wistar rats. The rats were divided into two batches: 16 control rats (C) drinking tap water and 16 treated rats drinkingFicus caricastem extract for six weeks. Then, each group was divided into two subgroups, and one of them was intraperitoneally injected (i.p.) daily methanol at a dose of 2.37 g/kg body weight i.p. for 30 days, for four weeks. The results showed that FE was found to contain large amounts of polyphenols and carotenoids. The treatment with methanol exhibited a significant increase of serum hepatic biochemical parameters (ALT, AST, ALP, and LDH) and hepatic lipid peroxidation. Hepatic antioxidant enzymes, namely, SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px, were significantly decreased in methanol-treated animals. FE treatment prior to methanol intoxication has significant role in protecting animals from methanol-induced hepatic oxidative damage.

Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the behavioral activities of Wistar rats induced with rotenone. Methods: Thirty-six male Wistar rats were taken for the study and divided into six groups of six rats each. Group-I is the vehicle-treated, Group–II animals were induced with rotenone (3 mg/kg/bwt) by i. p. Group-III were co-treated with rotenone and L-DOPA (10 mg/kg/bwt) orally, Group-IV were co-treated with rotenone and quercetin (25 mg/kg/bwt) orally, Group-V were co-treated with rotenone and hesperidin (50 mg/kg/bwt) orally, Group-VI were treated with rotenone, quercetin and hesperidin in the same dosage regime for 60 d. The behavioural tests, such as open field test, ladder climbing test and hanging wire test were performed. The biochemical parameters such as urea, creatinine and activities of ALT and AST were also analysed.Results: All data are expressed as the mean±SD. Disability was noted in the behaviour of rats induced with Parkinson’s disease (PD). The deficits in behavioral activity were significantly changed when compared with an induced group (p<0.001) and biochemical parameters due to rotenone were significantly (p<0.001) restored by co-treatment with quercetin and hesperidin.Conclusion: In our in vivo study, we have demonstrated the combination of quercetin and hesperidin to serve as neuroprotective compounds by improving the behavioral abnormalities and restoring the biochemical parameters. Hence, these powerful antioxidants may protect brain cells.

Objective: to assess the effect of chronic nonspecific stress on changes of the biochemical parameters of the blood serum in male Wistar rats.Material and methods. The experimental study was performed on sexually mature male Wistar rats. The experimental group (n = 71) was exposed to chronic nonspecific stress according to the Ortiz method. The control group of the animals included intact animals (n = 31).Results. The study has revealed changes in the biochemical composition of the blood serum of the rats: increased activity of ALT, LDH, ALP, urea, uric acid, and cholesterol, a decreased level of triglycerides.Conclusion. These changes may indicate the alteration of the level of the intensity of the physiological processes of energy supply in the conditions of chronic stress.
