The psychological effects of blind and open weighing in women with a high drive for thinness: A mixed method inquiry

A high drive-for-thinness (DT) score obtained from the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 is associated with surrogate markers of energy deficiency in exercising women. The purposes of this study were to confirm the association between DT and energy deficiency in a larger population of exercising women that was previously published and to compare the distribution of menstrual status in exercising women when categorized as high vs. normal DT. A high DT was defined as a score ≥7, corresponding to the 75th percentile for college-age women. Exercising women age 22.9 ± 4.3 yr with a BMI of 21.2±2.2 kg/m2 were retrospectively grouped as high DT (n = 27) or normal DT (n = 90) to compare psychometric, energetic, and reproductive characteristics. Chi-square analyses were performed to compare the distribution of menstrual disturbances between groups. Measures of resting energy expenditure (REE) (4,949 ± 494 kJ/day vs. 5,406 ± 560 kJ/day, p < .001) and adjusted REE (123 ± 16 kJ/LBM vs. 130 ± 9 kJ/LBM, p = .027) were suppressed in exercising women with high DT vs. normal DT, respectively. Ratio of measured REE to predicted REE (pREE) in the high-DT group was 0.85 ± 0.10, meeting the authors’ operational definition for an energy deficiency (REE:pREE <0.90). A greater prevalence of severe menstrual disturbances such as amenorrhea and oligomenorrhea was observed in the high-DT group (χ2 = 9.3, p = .003) than in the normal-DT group. The current study confirms the association between a high DT score and energy deficiency in exercising women and demonstrates a greater prevalence of severe menstrual disturbances in exercising women with high DT.

This study is part of a larger PhD research project on marital satisfaction of Breast Cancer Patients and their spouses in the Discipline of Sociology. The study was conducted by using a mixed method design. An interpretative research approach was used to collect data from 12 couples confronting breast cancer to unveil their experiences of marital satisfaction, while data from 279 couples were taken through a survey. In this paper the qualitative finding will be presented to highlight the couples’ nuanced experience as a consequence of their diagnosis. The findings reveal that the majority of participants experienced distress in their marital relationship. Breast cancer-confronting couples stated that breast cancer affected their intimate and /sexual relationship, besides acquainting them with individual psychological and mutual spousal issues. Difficulties in dealing with physical deformity and psychological effects resulting from breast cancer, and the ways these changes influenced their marital satisfaction, were observed by a majority of the participants. The findings suggest that couples with strong emotional bonding and understanding dealt with these consequences in a better way.

The female athlete triad is the interrelation of low energy availability, menstrual dysfunction, and low bone mineral density. Previously, the components of the female athlete triad have been linked to bone stress injuries. The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between drive for thinness, a proxy indicator of low energy availability, and musculoskeletal injuries. Fifty-seven female athletes, from an NCAA Division II college, were followed throughout their respective sport season for musculoskeletal injuries. Women were grouped based on a median split of the drive for thinness score (high drive for thinness (DT) vs. low DT). At the end of each sport season, injury data were compiled using an electronic medical record database. Forty-seven of the 57 women (82%) incurred 90 musculoskeletal injuries. The most prevalent injuries included: Low back pain/spasm/strain (n = 12), followed by shin splints/medial tibial stress syndrome (n = 9), general knee pain (n = 7), quadriceps strain (n = 6), and knee sprain (anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament, and lateral collateral ligament sprains; n = 5). The number of in-season injuries in the High DT group (2.0 ± 0.3) was significantly higher than the Low DT group (1.2 ± 0.2, p = 0.026). A high drive for thinness is associated with an increased number of injuries during the competitive season.

Kompetente Pflege und effektives Leadership sind wichtige Voraussetzungen für die Bereitstellung einer qualitativ hochwertigen, evidenzbasierten, patienten- und ergebnisorientierten Patientenversorgung. Die Abteilung Klinische Pflegewissenschaft (KPW) am Universitätsspital Basel (USB) entwickelte und implementierte Programme zur gezielten Praxisentwicklung, welche die pflegerische Kompetenz sowie die des Leadership fördern. Zur Erfassung von Pflege- und Leadership-Kompetenz sowie der Arbeitsumgebungs- und Pflegequalität führte die KPW 2007 eine Evaluationsstudie mit einem Mixed-Method-Design durch. Am quantitativen Anteil der Studie nahmen 679 Pflegefachpersonen und 27 Stationsleitungen teil. Die deskriptiven Resultate zeigen, dass Pflegefachpersonen ihre durchschnittliche pflegerische Kompetenz über alle sieben Subkategorien der Nurse Competence Scale mit einem Mittelwert von 75,1 (VAS 0 – 100) beurteilten. Die Leadership-Kompetenz von Stationsleitungen wurde im oberen Drittel der Skala des Leadership Practice Inventory mit mittleren Werten zwischen 40 bis 50 (Meanscore: 6 – 60) eingeschätzt. Als Qualitätssicherungsmaßnahme sind regelmäßige Nachfolgeerhebungen im Sinne eines Monitoring geplant. Solche Erhebungen werden in Zukunft von zentraler Bedeutung sein, da zu erwarten ist, dass sich mit der Einführung des DRG-Finanzierungsmodells im schweizerischen Gesundheitswesen der Kontext der pflegerischen Leistungen verändern wird.

Background: Previous studies have shown that suicide-related Internet use can have both negative and positive psychological effects. Aims: This study examined the effect of suicide-related Internet use on users’ suicidal ideation, depression/anxiety tendency, and loneliness. Method: A two-wave panel study of 850 Internet users was conducted via the Internet. Results: Suicide-related Internet use (e.g., browsing websites about suicide methods) had negative effects on suicidal ideation and depression/anxiety tendency. No forms of suicide-related Internet use, even those that would generally be considered positive, were found to decrease users’ suicidal ideation. In addition, our results suggest that the greater the suicidal ideation and feelings of depression and loneliness of Internet users, the more they used the Internet. Conclusion: Since suicide-related Internet use can adversely influence the mental health of young adults, it is necessary to take measures to reduce their exposure to such information.

This note examines the relationship between affirmative action (AA) program perceptions and women’s self-ascribed capacity and desire to become leaders. We propose that women who believe that their organization implements a program of preferential selection toward women will experience negative psychological effects leading to lowered self-expectations for leadership, but that this effect will be moderated by their justice perceptions of AA programs. We test this proposition empirically for the first time with a Latin American female sample. Among Brazilian women managers, desire but not self-ascribed capacity to lead was reduced when they believed an AA policy was in place. Both desire’s and capacity’s relationships with belief in an AA policy were moderated by justice perceptions.
