When addressing socio-scientific wicked problems, there is a need to negotiate across and through multiple modes of evidence, particularly technical expertise and local knowledge. Democratic innovations, such as deliberative citizens’ juries, have been proposed as a means of managing these tensions and as a way of creating representative, fairer decision making. But there are questions around participatory processes, the utilization of expertise, and deliberative quality. This paper considers forms of argumentation in the 2013-2014 “Citizens’ juries on wind farm development in Scotland.” Through a critical-interpretative research methodology drawing on rhetoric and argumentation, we demonstrate that arguments relating to the topoi of the environment and health functioned as de facto reasoning, whereas arguments using social scientific evidence around economics more prominently interacted with local knowledge. The findings offer implications for process design to improve and promote deliberative quality in mini-publics and other forms of participatory engagement on socio-scientific issues.

This research article reports how rhetorical elements used in the speeches of Swami Vivekananda at World Parliament of Religions supports to construct the religious harmony in the world. This study is based on qualitative interpretative research design and employs the theoretical ideas based on Richard Andrews to interpret the various rhetorical devices in his selected speeches. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the use of arguments in his speeches by using the idea developed by Stephen Toulmin and his visual rhetoric is analyzed using the idea based on Tracey Owens Patton. Findings show that use of rhetorical elements in his speeches contributes to make his arguments stronger to construct the religious harmony among the world religions despite the apparent contradiction among them. He incorporated rhetorical devices in his speeches such as metaphors, similes, parallelism, appropriate dictions and repetitions to persuade the audience to establish his claim more effectively by making simple and understandable. His rhetoric of spiritualization of religions with the support of interpretation of Vedic philosophy contributes to integrate the world religions by stating that every human being has been created equally having the body and immortal spirit with them. His visual rhetoric including attractive bodily appearance, confidence and commanding voice helped him to attract the attention of the large mass of audience towards him. Findings of this article contribute to a better understanding that appropriate use of rhetorical elements supports to make effective communication and helps to persuade the audience to achieve the goal.

Abstract Background Comparative history applied to health education may be a tool to understand institutional key processes within our national health research evolution. In Colombia, first groups of undergraduates interested in research emerged in 1996, being called seedbeds. Universitary Foundation of Health Sciences (FUCS) developed its own seedbeds and created a National Meeting (NM) to join others as network. Objective here is to describe its evolution and perspectives along a 15-year timespan (2004-2019). Methods Ethically approved qualitative hermeneutic-interpretative research using content analysis, compared history and interviews to key figures. Data came from digital files with FUCS policies (statutes, education plans and rules), FUCS High Council meetings acts and audiovisual material directly pertaining the NM; files were condensed using Endnote X9 and NVivo 12 to generate categories, benchmarks and timeline. Results Three stages emerged: a) conception (2004-2009), seedbed was an external construct adopted by FUCS since formative research was embedded in its teaching activities; b) blooming (2010-2014), FUCS offices and areas participated in developing regulations and giving administrative/financial support, 19 seedbeds in 4 faculties were created, and first two NMs were advertised and executed, c) growth (2015-onwards) devoted to “maintenance & consolidation”, with three events, country-wide participants from 57 universities and 370 research projects exhibited (2019). Conclusions The NM reflect FUCS institutional development and progress in teaching and promoting research through organized, dynamic and productive undergraduate research seedbeds. Key messages In Colombia, undergraduate seedbeds are promoted as paramount educational activity; in this endeavour, FUCS national meetings have become centre-piece after 15 years.

The objective of this case study is to investigate the role of student mobility in the development of intercultural communicative competence in university students. In order to indicate the changes in the participants, especially about their attitudes towards Spanish culture, Spaniards and their stereotypes, an interpretative research with an ethnographic approach has been carried out, namely, we have interviewed several students of Hispanic Philology from the University of Ljubljana (level C1 of Spanish), who had spent at least one semester with the Erasmus scholarship studying in Spain. The article does not pretend to achieve a statistical generalization due to its limited sample, however it can be useful as a preliminary study.

This paper uncovers language-related issues that skilled female migrants face and what their strategies are to (re-)build their careers after migrating. Using an inductive, interpretative research methodology, the author conducted 19 in-depth interviews with skilled German women who had migrated to France. Contrary to the findings of extant research, the study revealed that host country language proficiency played a minor role in the migration motivation, choice of destination, and labor market integration in this sample. However, the informants’ mother tongue (German) and their proficiency in English were perceived as competitive advantages when it came to integrating into the labor market. For some, these particular language skills even led to a conscious change of career. The findings demonstrate that language proficiency goes beyond grammatical mastery but relates, more importantly, to culture-sensitive communication skills underlining the importance of investigating language associated with the concept of culture. This study contributes to the language-related literature on international migration by combining different strands of research and levels of analysis to obtain a more holistic picture of the complex impact of language and its culture-relatedness.

The objective of this study was to assess the digital-analogue ideological positioning of the jubilee coalition. Lakoff’s (1993) Conceptual Metaphor Theory was the guiding principle to this study for it hoists metaphor above its linguistic value to consider the conceptual property on which this study is founded. This study adopted an interpretative research design targeting all the telecast campaign coverage between 24th December 2012 and 1st March 2013. The video clips as well as the FGD participants were purposively sampled in terms of specific relevance to the objective of this study. The study made use of video method of data collection as well as FGDs. The video clips used in this study were sought from the mainstream TV channels namely Citizen TV of Royal Media Services (RMS), Kenya Television Network (KTN) of Standard Group (SG) and Nation Television (NTV) of Nation Media Group (NMG). The clips were transcribed and then interpreted for their conceptual relevance to the digital-analogue metaphor. This study established that the digital alagoue Metaphor summarized the ideological incline that characterised their campaign discourse which in turn accorded them a favourable attitude from the voter. It was clear that majority of the voters were influenced by the ideology pedalled in the digital-analogue narrative. The study recommended that there should be a critical evaluation of campaign discourse for the public to decide based on deliberative and substantive policies from those seeking elective positions.

This article is part of a common European trend that focuses on the professional development and qualifications of individuals for their employability. The sociological category of “liquid modernity” (Bauman, 2007) as applied to current reality is adopted. Also, the qualitative effects of adaptability (Fernández Aráoz, 2008) as a competence derived from the business world are considered with the following aim: to account for the potential value of adaptation for the ongoing professional development of teaching specialists in bilingual education. Using qualitative-interpretative research, content analysis is performed for an in-depth treatment of data obtained from a heterogeneous sample of in-service teachers. This is done by means of questionnaires and life stories. Results reveal the status of the components of adaptation, articulated by informants as adaptive capacity features and adaptability attributes. The values presented show that adaptive capacity has low structural potential, while there is a lack of balance in adaptability attributes. Finally, guidelines and remediation strategies are offered to agents, institutional bodies and teacher trainers, responsible for the professional development of bilingual teachers.

This paper shows results of an empirical study on characteristics of instructional school leadership conducted on the sample of 30 Croatian elementary school principals. Two research questions were asked: 1. How elementary school principals describe and comment instructional school leadership activities that they conduct in their schools, observing them from their own role’s perspective and instructional goals that they want to achieve and 2. How elementary school principals describe and experience circumstances that have an impact on initiation and implementation of previously described instructional school leadership activities. In regards to set questions, elementary qualitative interpretative research approach was used. Data was gathered using written interview, whereas the results of thematic content analysis revealed two key thematic categories: the list of most conducted instructional school leadership activities and key interactions of principals during the implementation of instructional school leadership. Variabilities in the implementation of instructional school leadership in several aspects were observed, out of which key instructional school leadership’s contents and outcomes focused on the strengthening of students’ and teachers’ capacities are singled out as well as roles and principals’ relationship in interaction with various subjects.
