Approaches for securing digital assets of information systems can be classified as active approaches based on attack models, and passive approaches based on system-models. Passive approaches are inherently superior to active ones. However, taking full advantage of passive approaches calls for a rigorous standard for a low-complexity-high-integrity execution environment for security protocols. We sketch broad outlines of mirror network (MN) modules, as a candidate for such a standard. Their utility in assuring real-world information systems is illustrated with examples.

The benefits of combining soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and photoelectron microscopy are demonstrated by applying this combination (XMCD–PEEM) not only to magnetic domain imaging but also to quantitative evaluation of the distribution of spin and orbital magnetic moments. The latter takes full advantage of the spectroscopic aspect of XMCD–PEEM.

This article examines the relationship between a firm's strength in product development and its optimal scope. Firms with product development strength have two options: They can leverage it in horizontally related markets, and they can reach into the supply chain to take full advantage of it. The question is how this should be done. One possibility is for the firm to expand its scope, and another is to manage the linkage through contracts. On the basis of the adjustment cost theory of the firm, the author argues that the former solution is more appropriate when product development is fast-paced. This study tests the argument in a sample of several thousand firms and reports four tests. For both types of expansion, the author examines the incidence and the productivity of increased scope. The author uses several measures and finds results that are consistent with the theory.

In the spring of 2001, the upgraded Fermilab Tevatron will begin its collider physics run with [Formula: see text] collisions at [Formula: see text], where it is expected to deliver an integrated luminosity of 2 fb -1 in the first two years. The DØ detector is undergoing an extensive upgrade in order to take full advantage of the high luminosity running conditions. The upgraded detector's new silicon vertex detector, fiber tracker, and lepton trigger capabilities make a rich B physics program possible at DØ. This paper describes the prospects for several DØ B physics measurements, including CP violation in [Formula: see text] decays, Bs mixing and [Formula: see text] lifetime.
