Effects of heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of TiC/TiB composite bioinert ceramic coatings in-situ synthesized by laser cladding on Ti6Al4V

ABSTRACTPyrolysis of polymer precursors (polysilazane) is a technologically and economically interesting way to produce thin ceramic coatings. However, many cracks appear and decohesion occurs during pyrolysis when the ceramic coatings (SiOCN) are thicker than 0.5 micrometers. In order to understand these cracking phenomena, the coatings are mechanically characterized by nanoindentation at different stages of the pyrolysis heat treatment.During pyrolysis, the cracking temperature is detected by in-situ optical observation. The thickness of the coatings varies during pyrolysis from 3 micrometers at the polymeric state to 1 micrometer at the ceramic state. The coatings' properties, hardness and Young's modulus are evaluated after heat treatment, taking into account the substrate's influence. A large variation of these properties occurs at the cracking temperature. Both the hardness and the Young's modulus are multiplied by a factor of 10. By analysing these results, we show that cracking is correlated with the evolution of the coatings' mechanical properties during the transformation.

Bulky sample was made by using TIG wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology, in which Ф1.6 mm filler wire of in-situ TiB2/Al-Si composites was selected as deposition metal, following by T6 heat treatment. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the bulky sample before and after heat treatment were analyzed. Experimental results showed that the texture of the original samples parallel to the weld direction and perpendicular to the weld direction was similar consisting of columnar dendrites and equiaxed crystals. After T6 heat treatment, the hardness of the sample was increased to 115.85 HV from 62.83 HV, the yield strength of the sample was 273.33 MPa, the average tensile strength was 347.33 MPa, and the average elongation after fracture was 7.96%. Although pore defects existed in the fracture, yet the fracture of the sample was ductile fracture.

Titanium-based coatings reinforced by in situ synthesized TiB and TiC were deposited on Ti6Al4V by laser cladding. The effects of Y2O3 on microstructure and mechanical properties of the coatings were investigated. The coating without Y2O3 is mainly composed of a-Ti cellular dendrites and an eutecticum in which a large number of coarse and fine needle-shaped TiB and a few equiaxial TiC particles are homogeneously embedded. A small amount of Y2O3 addition can refine the microstructure by transforming a-Ti grains from cellular dendrites to columnar or equiaxial crystals, and can increase the volume fraction of the reinforcements. The addition of Y2O3 can also increase microhardness and reduce the cracking sensitivity of the coating.

In this paper Ti2AlC/TiAl composites were in-situ fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and then the effects of rapid heat-treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti2AlC/TiAl composites were investigated. After rapid heat-treatment the microstructure of TiAl matrix was significantly transformed from the near γ microstructure to duplex microstructure. Ti2AlC particles effectively refined the γ phase grains and the α2/γ lamellar colony microstructure. For the Ti2AlC/TiAl composite after rapid heat-treatment at 1200°C, the bending strength and fracture toughness reached 956.8MPa and 22.8MPa·m1/2, respectively.
