The Wall-modeled Large-eddy Simulation (WMLES) methods are commonly accompanied with an underprediction of the skin friction and a deviation of the velocity profile. The widely-used Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES) method is suggested to improve the prediction of the mean skin friction when it acts as WMLES, as claimed by the original authors. However, the model tested only on flow configurations with no heat transfer. This study takes a systematic approach to assess the performance of the IDDES model for separated flows with heat transfer. Separated flows on an isothermal wall and walls with mild and intense heat fluxes are considered. For the case of the wall with heat flux, the skin friction and Stanton number are underpredicted by the IDDES model however, the underprediction is less significant for the isothermal wall case. The simulations of the cases with intense wall heat transfer reveal an interesting dependence on the heat flux level supplied; as the heat flux increases, the IDDES model declines to predict the accurate skin friction.

Representing surface tension by nonlinear relationship on temperature, the boundary value problem of linear stability differential equation on small perturbation is derived. Under the condition of the isothermal wall the effects of nonlinear surface tension on stability of heat transfer in saturated liquid film of different liquid low boiling point gases are investigated as wall temperature is varied.

A downward blowing isothermal wall jet at moderate Reynolds numbers (1,500 to 8,500) with significant inflow turbulence (ca. 6%) was investigated. The flow configuration is an idealization of the air curtains of refrigerated display cases. Flow visualization using particle seeding was employed to identify the flow field eddy dynamics. Particle Image Velocimetry was used to examine the velocity fields in terms of mean and fluctuating values. These diagnostics showed that the air curtain entrainment was dominated by a large variety of eddies that engulfed ambient air into the air curtain. The velocity fields generally showed linear spreading, significant deceleration and high turbulence levels (ca. 25%). It was observed that the air curtain dynamics, velocity fields and growth were not significantly sensitive to Reynolds number variation between Re=3,800 and Re=8,500. However, at low air velocities (Re=1,500), the curtain was found to detach, leading to a large air curtain thickness and high curtain entrainment.

Direct numerical simulations (DNSs) on autoignition and flame propagation of inhomogeneous methane–air mixtures in a closed vessel are conducted with considering detailed kinetic mechanism and temperature dependence of transport and thermal properties. The mixtures with spatial inhomogeneity of temperature or equivalence ratio are investigated. Periodic condition for non-heatloss cases or isothermal wall condition for heatloss cases is imposed on the boundaries. From the DNS results without heatloss, effects of spatial inhomogeneity of temperature and equivalence ratio on mean heat release rate are clarified. Increase of spatial variations of temperature or equivalence ratio suppresses drastic rise of mean heat release rate and reduces its maximum value. Autoignition process is affected by temperature more strongly than equivalence ratio. In the cases with heatloss, ignition delay increases and the maximum mean heat release rate decreases. After autoignition process, propagating flame is formed along walls. Heat transfer characteristics in a closed vessel are also discussed with combustion mechanisms.

In this experimental–theoretical investigation, we consider a turbulent plume generated by an isothermal wall in a closed cavity and the formation of heat stratification in the interior. The buoyancy of the plume near the wall and the temperature stratification are measured across a vertical plane with the temperature laser induced fluorescence method, which is shown to be accurate and efficient (precision of $0.2\,^{\circ }$C) for experimental studies on convection. The simultaneous measurement of the velocity field with particle image velocimetry allows for the calculation of the flow characteristics such as the Richardson number and Reynolds stress. This enables us to give a refined description of the wall plume, as well as the circulation and evolution of the stratification in the interior. The wall plume is found to have an inner layer close to the heated boundary with a laminar transport of hardly mixed fluid which causes a relatively warm top layer and an outer layer with a transition from laminar to turbulent at a considerable height. The measured entrainment coefficient is found to be dramatically influenced by the increase in stratification of the ambient fluid. To model the flow, the entrainment model of Morton, Taylor & Turner (Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A, vol. 234 (1196), 1956, pp. 1–23) has first been adapted to the case of an isothermal wall. Differences due to their boundary condition of a constant buoyancy flux, modelled with salt by Cooper & Hunt (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 646, 2010, pp. 39–58), turn out to be small. Next, to include the laminar–turbulent transition of the boundary layer, a hybrid model is constructed which is based on the similarity solutions reported by Worster & Leitch (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 156, 1985, pp. 301–319) for the laminar part and the entrainment model for the turbulent part. Finally, the observed variation of the global entrainment coefficient, which is due to the increased presence of an upper stratified layer with a relatively low entrainment coefficient, is incorporated into both models. All models show reasonable agreement with experimental measurements for the volume, momentum and buoyancy fluxes as well as for the evolution of the stratification in the interior. In particular, the introduction of the variable entrainment coefficient improves all models significantly.
