The heat release rate (HRR) of fires can be determined from the relationship between the thermal pyrolysis rate of combustibles and the effective heat of combustion. To accurately determine the thermal pyrolysis rate of combustibles, it is important to understand the heat of reaction of combustibles. However, this parameter is difficult to measure for combustibles, such as wood, that produce charring during combustion because they undergo a multi-step pyrolysis reaction. In this study, the ISO 5660-1 standard method was used to perform cone calorimetry experiments to understand how the HRR is affected by the heat of reaction heat and charring properties of combustibles. To this end, the HRR calculated using FDS computational analysis was compared to the measured value from the ISO 5660-1 cone calorimetry experiments. A dehydrated Douglas-fir, an evergreen tree of the pine family, was used as a combustible material. The cone calorimetry experiment and FDS computational analysis results confirmed that increases in the heat of reaction and charring properties were directly correlated with the decrease in the HRR.

To study the practicability of a micro combustion calorimeter to analyze the calorimetry kinetics of wood, a micro combustion calorimeter with 13 heating rates from 0.1 to 5.5 K/s was used to perform the analysis of 10 kinds of common hardwood and softwood samples. As a microscale combustion measurement method, MCC (microscale combustion calorimetry) can be used to judge the flammability of materials. However, there are two methods for measuring MCC: Method A and Method B. However, there is no uniform standard for the application of combustible MCC methods. In this study, the two MCC standard measurement Methods A and B were employed to check their practicability. With Method A, the maximum specific heat release rate, heat release temperature, and specific heat release of the samples were obtained at different heating rates, while for Method B, the maximum specific combustion rate, combustion temperature and net calorific values of the samples were obtained at different heating rates. The ignition capacity and heat release capacity were then derived and evaluated for all the common hardwood and softwood samples. The results obtained by the two methods have significant differences in the shape of the specific heat release rate curves and the amplitude of the characteristic parameters, which lead to the differences of the derived parameters. A comparison of the specific heat release and the net calorific heat of combustion with the gross caloric values and heating values obtained by bomb calorimetry was also made. The results show that Method B has the potentiality to evaluate the amount of combustion heat release of materials.

A high-efficiency fire retardant composition was prepared with dicyandiamide, phosphoric acid, boric acid, borax, urea and magnesium sulfate and it was used to process veneers which were then to prepare the plywood. Meanwhile, heat release and smoke release from combustion of plywood were tested by a cone calorimeter, including heat release rate, mass loss rate, CO yield, CO2 yield and oxygen consumption. Results showed that the plywood with this fire retardant treatment had the better flame-retardant performance and smoke suppression effect as well as the stronger char-forming capability compared to plywood without fire retardant treatment. The average heat release rate, total heat release, average effective heat of combustion, total smoke release, CO yield and oxygen consumption of the plywood with fire retardant treatment were decreased by 63.72%, 91.94%, 53.70%, 76.81%, 84.99% and 91.86%, respectively. Moreover, the fire growth index of plywood treated by fire retardant was relatively low (3.454 kW·m-2·s-1) and it took longer time to reach the peak heat release rate, accompanied with slow fire spreading. The fire performance index was relatively high (0.136 s·m2·kW-1) and it took longer time to be ignited, thus leaving a long time for escaping at fire accidents. The fire hazard of plywood with fire retardant treatment was low, and its safety level was high.

Lean premixed combustion is a common form of combustion organization in power equipment and propulsion systems. In order to understand the dynamic characteristics of lean premixed flame and predict and control its combustion instability, it is necessary to obtain its flame describing function (FDF). Based on the open source CFD toolbox, OpenFOAM, the dynamic K-equation model, and the finite rate Partially Stirred Reactor (PaSR) model were used to perform large eddy simulations (LES) of lean premixed combustion, and the response of the unsteady heat release rate to single-frequency harmonic disturbances was studied. The response of the unsteady heat release rate was characterized by the FDF, and the response of the unsteady heat release rate to the two-frequency harmonic disturbance was studied. The results show that the quantitative heat release rate response and flame dynamics have very proper accuracy. In the single-frequency harmonic disturbance, as the forcing frequency increases, the curling behavior of the flame surface and the instantaneous vortex structure change; the nonlinear kinematics effect is manifested by the entrainment of the vortex. At lower forcing frequencies, the heat release response changes linearly with the increase of forcing amplitude; at intermediate frequencies, the heat release response exhibits obvious nonlinear behavior; at high frequencies, the heat release response to amplitude changes decreases. The introduction of the second harmonic disturbance will significantly reduce the response range of the total heat release rate and make the combustion more stable.

The effects of compression ratio and fuel delivery advance angle on the combustion and emission characteristics of premixed methanol charge induced ignition by Fischer Tropsch diesel engine were investigated using a CY25TQ diesel engine. In the process of reducing the compression ratio from 16.9 to 15.4, the starting point of combustion is fluctuating, the peak of in-cylinder pressure and the maximum pressure increase rate decrease by 44.5% and 37.7% respectively. The peak instantaneous heat release rate increases by 54.4%. HC and CO emissions are on a rising trend. NOx and soot emissions were greatly decreased. The soot emission has the biggest drop of 50%. Reducing the fuel delivery advance angle will make the peak of in-cylinder pressure and the peak of pressure rise rate increase while the peak of heat release rate decreases. The soot emission is negatively correlated with the fuel delivery advance angle. When the fuel delivery advance angle is 16° CA, the soot emissions increased the most by 130%.
