A plankton-sampling programme for blue swimmer crab (Portunus pelagicus) larvae was conducted in the temperate waters of Gulf St Vincent, South Australia, to investigate: (1) if larval hatching is seasonal; (2) if larvae are restricted to surface waters; (3) if larvae are hatched offshore; and (4) if larval development occurs offshore. The temporal and spatial distribution and abundance of larvae indicated that hatching and zoeal development occur mainly in deeper offshore waters during the warmer months of November to March, and that zoeal development occurs in a range of depths from the neuston to at least 14 m. Although peaks in abundance usually occurred in the upper 3 m, zoeae were distributed throughout the water column, with the majority occurring in sub-surface waters below 1 m depth. There was no evidence for a daylight ontogenetic or tidal vertical migration in the four zoeal stages. Limited sampling revealed no evidence for a diurnal vertical migration in stage-1 zoea. Although the seasonal and inshore-offshore patterns of hatching observed in the study were typical for a portunid species, the broad vertical distribution differed from that observed for P. pelagicus in previous studies.

With abundant groundwater resources and obvious spatial distribution characteristics of confined aquifers, the Yuyao River valley is located in Ningbo, a coastal city in eastern China. It is greatly significant for studying the formation, movement and recharge of groundwater and establishing a sustainable groundwater management system to determine the spatial distribution of confined aquifers. In this paper, the spatial distribution of confined aquifers in the Yuyao River valley are studied by combining the symmetrical quadrupole electrical sounding method with hydrogeological data. Through analysis of the existing hydrogeological data, it is corroborated that there are sand gravel and round gravel confined aquifers in the study area. Then, the results of borehole-side electrical sounding measurements show that significant electrical differences are found among each rock-soil layer in the study area, and the resistivity of sand gravel and round gravel confined aquifers varies from 10 to 20 Ω·m. Finally, 77 symmetrical quadrupole electrical soundings on 5 lines were carried out perpendicular to the Yuyao River valley, and the data of electrical sounding were inverted and analyzed by the analysis software of GeoElectro. After calibration with boreholes, the confined aquifers in the study area were determined to be zonally distributed along the middle line of the valley, with buried depth ranging from -65 to -25 m and width exceeding 1000 m.

This study explored the spatial distribution of phosphorus fractions in river sediments and analyzed the relationship between different phosphorus fractions and their environmental influence on the sediments within different watersheds in Eastern China. River sediments from two inflow watersheds (Hongze and Tiaoxi) to Hongze and Taihu Lake in Eastern China were analyzed by the sequential extraction procedure. Five fractions of sedimentary phosphorus, including freely sorbed phosphorus (NH4Cl-P), redox-sensitive phosphorus (BD-P), bound phosphorus metal oxide (NaOH-P), bound phosphorus calcium (HCl-P), and residual phosphorus (Res-P) were all analyzed. The orders of rankings for the P fractions of the rivers Anhe and Suihe were HCl-P > NaOH-P > BD-P > NH4Cl-P and HCl-P > BD-P > NaOH-P > NH4Cl-P, respectively. For the rank order of the Hongze watershed, HCl-P was higher while the NH4Cl-P contents were significantly lower. The rank order for the Dongtiaoxi River was NaOH-P > HCl-P > BD-P > NH4Cl-P, and that of Xitiaoxi River was NaOH-P > BD-P > HCl-P > NH4Cl-P. Compared with the phosphorus forms of the Tiaoxi watershed, NaOH-P contents were significantly higher compared to HCl-P, which was significantly higher in the Hongze watershed. In comparison, NH4Cl-P contents were significantly lower in both. Variations may be attributed to differential discharge of the P form in the watershed due to land-use changes and urban river ambient conditions.

Abstract. In Eastern China (EC), strong anthropogenic emissions deteriorate the atmospheric environment harbored by the upstream Tibetan and Loess Plateaus, building a south-north zonal distribution of high anthropogenic aerosols. This research analyzed the interannual variability of precipitations with different intensities in the EC region from 1961 to 2010. We found that the frequency of light rain significantly decreased and the occurrence of rainstorm, especially the extraordinary rainstorm significantly increased over the recent decades. The extreme precipitation events presented the same interannual variability pattern with the frequent haze events. Moreover, the extreme rainfall events of various intensities showed a regular interannual variability trend. During the 1980s, the regional precipitation trends in EC showed an obvious "transform" from more light rain to more extreme rainstorms. The running correlation analysis of interdecadal variation further verified that the correlation between the increasing aerosol emissions and the frequency of abnormal precipitation events tended to be more significant in the EC. The correlation between atmospheric visibility and low cloud amounts, which are both closely related with aerosol concentrations, had a spatial distribution of "northern positive and southern negative" pattern, and the spatial distribution of the frequency variability of regional rainstorms was "southern positive and northern negative". After the 1990s, the visibility in summer season deteriorated more remarkably than other seasons, and the light rain frequency decreased obviously while the rainstorm and extraordinary heavy rainfall occurred more frequently. There were significant differences in the interdecadal variation trends in light rain and rainstorm events between the high aerosol concentration areas in the EC and the relatively "clean area" in western China. The aircraft measurements over the EC confirmed that the diameters of cloud droplets decreased under high aerosol concentration condition, thereby inhibiting weak precipitation process.

Abstract Oxygen (δ18O) and hydrogen (δD) stable isotopes in the surface waters of the Huai River basin were analyzed in this study. Results indicated the northern waters had higher δ18O and δD than the southern waters, the water δ18O and δD increased along the water flow directions. These variations mostly resulted from the spatial differences of precipitation and evaporation. Comparing with published different continents' river water δ18O data, this study suggests that evaporation effect is a more plausible interpretation than altitude effect as the cause of δ18O increasing from upriver to downriver waters. This region's local surface water line (LSWL, δD = 5.36δ18O − 18.39; r2 = 0.84) represents one of the first presented LSWLs in eastern China. The correlation between d-excess and δ18O demonstrates this region is dominated by the Pacific oceanic moisture masses in summer. Comparing the various LSWLs from eastern China and eastern United States river waters, this study proposes a hypothesis that the water LSWLs slopes of lower latitude regions may be less than those of higher latitude regions within similar topographic areas. This hypothesis may be tested in other geographically comparable coupled areas in the world if corresponding large-scale data can be found.
