The presence of bromate in water sources generates environmental concern due to its toxicity for humans. Diverse technologies, like membranes, ion exchange, chemical reduction, etc., can be employed to treat bromate-polluted water but they produce waste that must be treated. An alternative to these technologies can be the catalytic reduction of bromate to bromide using hydrogen as a reducing agent. In this review, we analyze the research published about this catalytic technology. Specifically, we summarize and discuss about the state of knowledge related to (1) the different metals used as catalysts for the reaction; (2) the influence of the support on the catalytic activity; (3) the characterization of the catalysts; (4) the reaction mechanisms; and (5) the influence of the water composition in the catalytic activity and in the catalyst stability. Based on published papers, we analyze the strength and weaknesses of this technique and the possibilities of using this reaction for the treatment of bromate-polluted water as a sustainable process.

‘77orn’, a derivative of the Morris rat hepatoma 7777, stably expresses high levels of ornithine transcarbamoylase (OTC) and carbamoylphosphate synthetase I (CPS-I), and is able to grow indefinitely in ornithine-medium (medium with ornithine in place of arginine). Variants that have lost this ability are isolated from 77orn by a ‘suicide’ selective technique dependent on the cellular incorporation of [3H]ornithine. These variants, which have reduced levels of CPS-I, or of both CPS-I and OTC, are shown to have developed multiple hormonal requirements; their enzyme deficiencies can be reversed by use of an appropriately supplemented medium. In particular, CPS-I is inducible by dexamethasone and dibutyryl-cyclic-AMP in combination. Cholera toxin can be used instead of cyclic-AMP, but then butyrate is additionally required if the induction is to be maintained in the long term. The use of these agents in excess can depress OTC. Several other hepatomas, and alos explanted foetal rat liver cells, have similar requirements for CPS-I expression. It is argued that multiple hormonal requirements for CPS-I production are normal in liver cells in vitro, and that hormone-independent hepatomas should be regarded as abnormal. The implications of this for the somatic cell genetic investigation of differentiation are briefly discussed.

Accumulation of dredged sediment has raised environmental concern in various countries. Recycling of sediment into bricks is a viable solution to the environmental pollution. Concerning to the utilization of sediment in bricks, this study reviews the needs of characterization on sediment and methods of producing sediment bricks. Particle size distribution was found to be the key criteria for characterization of sediment. Sizes of particles determined the function of the sediments in the bricks. In spite of that, leachability of heavy metals is another important aspect for contaminated sediment. Cementing bricks used cementing materials as the stabilization agent to the heavy metals. It is necessary to conduct leaching test for the end-product of the sediment to ensure the heavy metals leached are within the regulatory limits. In conclusion, method of producing sediment bricks may vary due to the various characteristics of sediment for a promising environmental friendly production.
