Background: Pregnancy may increase the risk of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection because of pregnancy induced immune suppression. The objective of this study was to use a large population-based dataset to estimate the prevalence of HPV infection and its association with adverse outcomes among pregnant women. Methods: We analyzed Pregnancy Risk Monitoring System data from 2004-2011 (N=26,085) to estimate the self-reported HPV infection. Survey logistic procedures were used to examine the relationship between HPV infection and adverse perinatal outcomes. Results: Approximately 1.4% of women were estimated to have HPV infection during their pregnancy. The prevalence of adverse outcomes in this sample was preterm birth (8.4%), preeclampsia (7.5%), low birth weight (6.3%) and premature rupture of membranes (2.8%). Compared to women without HPV infection, HPV infection positive women were much more likely to have had other infections such as chlamydia (9.23% vs. 2.12%, p-value <.0001), Group B Strep (21.7% vs. 10.04%, p-value <.0001), and herpes (7.17% vs. 1.07%, p-value <.0001). After adjusting for other risk factors including other infections, HPV infection was significantly associated with low birth weight (OR: 1.94, 95% CI: 1.14-3.30). Conclusion: The study indicated a potential association between HPV infection and low birth weight. Because pregnant women with HPV infection are at higher risk of other infections, future research may focus on the roles of co-infection in the development of adverse perinatal effects.

Abstract At present, embryo morphology assessment based on the observation of the embryonic morphological characteristics at several specific time points has been mainly used for selecting the high-quality embryo. However, we all know that embryo development is a dynamic process. Many research results on the correlation between the embryo morphokinetic parameters and embryo quality and development potential were inconsistent. With the help of time-lapse imaging, the development processes and outcomes of a total of 365 embryos were cultured and analyzed in this study. The results showed that the mean tPNf and t2 of the high-quality embryo were significantly shorter than the low-quality embryo; the mean t2PBe and tPNa of the high-quality embryo from the implantation group were significantly shorter than those from the non-implantation group. In addition, based on the quartile grouping of each morphokinetic parameter, the embryos that had 21.15≤tPNf≤25.30 value were significantly higher in embryo quality when compared with the embryos that had the tPNf values outside the range on Days 3. Similarly, the embryos that had values of t2≤25.60 were significantly higher in embryo quality than those with outside the range values on Days 3. Thus, we demonstrated that the morphokinetic parameter evaluated using a time-lapse embryo monitoring system can predict the embryo quality, and be benefit for the selection of the high-quality embryos and improvement for the implantation success of the patient in assisted reproductive technologies.

AbstractThis work is based on the assumption that a resistivity meter can effectively monitor water saturation in earth levees and can be used as a warning system when saturation exceeds the expected seasonal maxima. We performed time-lapse ERT measurements to assess the capability of this method to detect areas where seepage is critical. These measurements were also very useful to design a prototype monitoring system with remarkable savings by customizing the specifications according to field observations. The prototype consists of a remotely controlled low-power resistivity meter with a spread of 48 stainless steel 20 × 20 cm plate electrodes buried at half-meter depth. We deployed the newly-designed permanent monitoring system on a critical levee segment. A weather station and an ultrasonic water level sensor were also installed in order to analyse the correlation of resistivity with temperature, rainfalls and water level seasonal variations.The preliminary analysis of the monitoring data shows that the resistivity maps follow a very reasonable trend related with the saturation/drying cycle of the levee caused by the seasonal variations of the water level in the irrigation channel. Sharp water level changes cause delayed and smooth resistivity variations. Rainfalls and, to a lesser extent, temperature seem to have an influence on the collected data but effects are apparently negligible beyond 1 m depth. The system is currently operating and results are continuously monitored.

Objective: To determine if the application of time-lapse incubation and monitoring can be beneficial to clinical outcomes in assisted reproductive technology.Methods: A total of 600 patients were equally randomized to three groups, namely, conventional embryo culture and standard morphological selection (CM group), time-lapse culture and standard morphological selection (TLM group), and time-lapse culture and morphokinetic selection (TLA group). Notably, 424 undergoing fresh autologous in vitro fertilization cycles were analyzed, 132 patients in the CM group, 158 in the TLM group, and 134 in the TLA group. Main outcomes included clinical outcomes, embryo development rates, and perinatal outcomes.Results: Clinical pregnancy rates in the time-lapse groups were significantly higher than in the CM group (CM 65.2% vs. TLM 77.2% vs. TLA 81.3%). Implantation rates and live birth rates were significantly higher for the TLA group (59.7 and 70.9%) compared with the CM group (47.7 and 56.1%) but not compared with the TLM group (55.4 and 67.1%). There was no statistical difference in miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy rates among the three groups. Overall, birth weight was significantly higher in the time-lapse groups (CM 2,731.7 ± 644.8 g vs. TLM 3,066.5 ± 595.4 g vs. TLA 2,967.4 ± 590.0 g). The birth height of newborns in the TLM group was significantly longer than that of the CM group and TLA group (CM 48.3± 4.4 cm vs. TLM 49.8± 2.3 cm vs. TLA 48.5± 2.7 cm).Conclusion: Time-lapse incubation and monitoring have a significant benefit on clinical pregnancy rates and on overall birth weights while morphokinetic analysis is not necessary.Clinical Trial Registration: [www.ClinicalTrials.gov], identifier [NCT02974517].
