AbstractIn the present paper the theoretical basis and experimental verification of a method, enabling the calculation of defect concentration and their mobility in transition metal oxides and sulphides have been described. The idea of proposed method consists in determination of both these parameters in indirect way, i.e. in studying the influence of aliovalent metallic additions on the oxidation kinetics of a given metal (doping effect). It has been shown that from the results of oxidation kinetics of binary alloys, the enthalpy and entropy of defect formation and their migration can be calculated. These data, in turn, can be used for the calculation of defect concentration and defect mobility in pure, undoped oxides. Such a possibility has been illustrated on the example of nonstoichiometric nickel oxide, Ni

Abstract Gravity dewatering of fibrous suspension is one of basic technological operations in paper production process. Although there are numerous methods to determine dewatering of such suspensions, none of them can measure undisturbed flow of removed water. In the paper the idea and design of a new apparatus for the determination of drainage rate of fibrous suspensions is presented. The apparatus differs from other known devices by minimisation of filtrate flow resistance in the outlet part of the equipment. In the second part of the paper measurements of the drainage rate have been presented. The flow resistance of the fluid through the bottom wire screen in the device was determined. The calculated flow resistance will be used in the developed model of dynamic drainage of fibrous suspensions, which will be discussed in our following paper (Przybysz et al., 2014).

Operando spectroelectrochemical analysis is used to determine the water oxidation reaction kinetics for hematite photoanodes prepared using four different synthetic procedures. Whilst these photoanodes exhibit very different current / voltage performance, their underlying water oxidation kinetics are found to be almost invariant. Lower photoanode performance was found to correlate with the observation of optical signals indicative of charge accumulation in mid-gap oxygen vacancy states, indicating these states do not contribute directly to water oxidation.
