Transcriptome-wide analysis of North-East Indian rice cultivars in response to Bipolaris oryzae infection revealed the importance of early response to the pathogen in suppressing the disease progression

Most of the rice cultivars exhibit suspension of growth when submerged to overcome the reduced availability of oxygen. When the situation continues, majority of the cultivars unable to recover after the flood recedes. However, there are fortunately some rice genotypes that can withstand such submerged condition for up to two weeks by adapting two totally opposite mechanisms. One type of cultivars elongates enormously at a very short span of time and the leaves come above the water level. In the second type, they remain under water without any growth. Cultivars of both types tolerate the submergence but the first category easily lodges when flood water recede. In those lines, yields are reduced drastically. In this study, we focus on characterize the genetic variation at the Sub1 locus and to associate its relevance, if any, to submergence tolerance among the deep water landraces. As a first step, seeds of some rice cultivars collected from North-east Indian regions were initially selected for the characterization of genetic variation. The PCR based analysis involving several genes known to be associated with submergence tolerance did not reveal much difference. However, Southern hybridization revealed certain differences between submergence tolerant and susceptible cultivars. Although we did not notice major difference with regard to Sub1 genes when tried with EcoRI and BamHI, differences were noticed with adh1 and RAmy3C genes. Representative, Southern analysis showed the genetic variation among the deep-water cultivars as compared to Swarna and Sub1-Swarna. It is possible that deep-water rice cultivars may not differ in their genome at Sub1 locus but they respond through SNORKEL genes under submergence.

: In prosthodontics, esthetics a combination of the art and science. Patients requiring complete dentures usually expect comfort first, followed by harmonious appearance, and lastly efficiency. Therefore, the correct selection of the artificial teeth is essential for achieving a pleasant esthetic outcome. A number of soft tissue landmarks have been purported as useful for anterior tooth selection; but these are easily affected by several factors such as aging and the weight and build of the person. In the present study hard tissue landmarks like pterygomaxillary notches and maxillary arch width was presented as alternative anatomical landmark for anterior teeth selection. The aim of the study was to evaluate the hamular width and inter maxillary arch width which could be the guide for the selection ofartificial teeth for complete maxillary denture in the North-East Indian population.The study was conducted on 100 dentate individuals from the North Eastern Indian population, between the age group of 18- 30 years. All measurements were done with digital calliper on cast obtained after impression with irreversible hydrocolloid impression material.Pearson correlation analysis showed, statistically significant correlation between maxillary archwidth and central incisor width. The result was significant at p<0.05 but not high enough to be practically used. Correlation between hamular width and central incisor width was found to be insignificant. The value of R was 0.05435. The result was significant at p < 0.05. The maxillary arch width was in direct proportion to the maxillary central incisor width which meant that the increase of maxillary arch width,there was a corresponding increase of maxillary central incisor width. Significant correlation was found between maxillary arch width and central incisor width with p value=0132. The result was significant at p<0.05 but not high enough to be practically used. But In this study statistically insignificant correlation was found between hamular width and central incisor width.

Background: The Neck Disability Index (NDI) is an important self-assessment tool used extensively worldwide, in clinical practice with implications into scientific research fields. It is used to assess the extent of pain and levels of functional disability associated with neck pain. The NDI consists of 10 items where each item was scored from a scale of 0 to 5 giving the maximum score possible to 50. Though proven to be a reliable instrument in the English-speaking population, the NDI has never been validated and culturally adapted in the Mizo language among the rural north-east Indian region where English is not spoken as means of communication. The aim is to translate and cross culturally adapt the NDI into Mizo tawng (official language of Mizoram) with the objective of establishing reliability and validity of the M-NDI in patients with non-specific neck pain.Methods: A total of 49 subjects participated voluntarily from the rural primary health care, Lunglei district, Mizoram. Subject having chronic non-specific neck pain lasting more than 3 months were included after taking a written formal consent.Results: The internal consistency determined by Cronbach alpha, and the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) using the test-retest reliability showed a good and an excellent reliability respectively (α=0.82, ICC=0.97, 95% CI= 0.95-0.98). Construct validity was determined between the variables-Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and NDI by Pearson’s correlation coefficient and found to have a good correlation r=0.89 and significant difference at p<0.001.Conclusions: The study results concluded the Mizo version of NDI to be easy to understand, reliable and valid instrument for measuring disability and functional limitations of daily activities in non-specific neck pain in the Mizo speaking population.
