Recent animal experiments have shown that palatal repair without denudation of bone leads to a superior dento-alveolar development. The aim of this clinical study was to evaluate the peri- and postoperative course and the dento-alveolar development of the deciduous dentition in Japanese ULCP, and CP patients up to 5 years after two different types of palatal repair. One of the methods, the Kohama (1991) supraperiosteal flap technique, Is performed without denudation of the bony palate, while the other, the Wardill (1937) push-back technique, results in areas of denuded bone. It was concluded that the supraperiosteal technique can be performed successfully in approximately the same amount of time as the push-back technique. Re-epithelialization of the wound areas after supraperiosteal repair takes about 1 week, which is one third of the time associated with healing after the push-back technique. Arch depth of the deciduous dentition after the supraperiosteal technique is superior compared to the push-back technique. The question of whether or not the supraperiosteal technique produces more favorable dento-alveolar development than the mucoperiosteal technique in the permanent dentition in humans has to be elucidated in future research.

Abstract Objectives The aim of the current study was to evaluate influence of serum triglyceride levels on the course of acute pancreatitis (AP). Methods Rats models of hypertriglyceridemic were used in animal experiments. Following induction of acute pancreatitis, amylase, and pancreas histological scores were all compared. In addition, in a clinical study, clinical data were collected from 1681 AP patients admitted from 2003 to 2016 who were divided into 4 groups based on their serum triglyceride (TG) levels. The clinical features among these 4 groups were compared, and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was also performed on TG values to estimate their relationship with severity. Results In animal experiments, the hypertriglyceridemic pancreatitis (HTGP) group had markedly higher serum amylase, and histological scores relative to the other animal groups. In the clinical study, we identified significant differences in gender, age, body mass index (BMI), cost, and incidence of partial complications among the 4 TG-based groups. Importantly, the TG levels on day 3–4 after admission could be used to accurately predict disease severity. Conclusions Hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) can aggravate pancreatic injury, and hypertriglyceridemia patients are more likely to suffer from severe pancreatic injury with a higher possibility of complications. In addition, triglyceride levels are correlated with the severity of AP positively.

BackgroundAcute kidney injury (AKI), when occurring in diabetic kidney disease (DKD), is known to be more severe and difficult to recover from. Inflammation and apoptosis may contribute to the heightened sensitivity of, and non-recovery from, AKI in patients with DKD. Resolvin D1 (RvD1) is a potent lipid mediator which can inhibit the inflammatory response and apoptosis in many diseases. However, it has been reported that the RvD1 levels were decreased in diabetes, which may explain why DKD is more susceptible to AKI.MethodsFor animal experiments, diabetic nephropathy (DN) mice were induced by streptozotocin (STZ) injection intraperitoneally. Renal ischemia–reperfusion was used to induce AKI. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine were determined using commercial kits to indicate renal function. Renal apoptosis was examined by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the marker of inflammatory response. Western blot was used to detect the expression of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)-related proteins. For clinical study, 12 cases diagnosed with DKD were enrolled in this study, and an equal number of non-diabetic renal disease patients (NDKD) were recruited as a control group. The serum RvD1 in DKD or NDKD patients were detected through an ELISA kit.ResultsIn clinical study, we found that the serum RvD1 levels were decreased in DKD patients compared to those in NDKD patients. Decreased serum RvD1 levels were responsible for the susceptibility to ischemic AKI in DKD patients. In animal experiments, both the serum RvD1 and renal ALX levels were downregulated. RvD1 treatment could ameliorate renal function and histological damage after ischemic injury in DN mice. RvD1 treatment also could inhibit the inflammatory response. Di-tert-butyl dicarbonate (BOC-2) treatment could deteriorate renal function and histological damage after ischemic injury in non-diabetic mice. RvD1 could inhibit the NF-κB activation and suppress inflammatory response mainly by inhibiting NF-κB signaling.ConclusionRvD1 attenuated susceptibility to ischemic AKI in diabetes by downregulating NF-κB signaling and inhibiting apoptosis. Downregulated serum RvD1 levels could be the crucial factor for susceptibility to ischemic AKI in diabetes.

This report reviews 27 cases of children exhibiting functional hearing loss. The study reveals that most students were in the upper elementary grades and were predominantly females. These subjects were functioning below their ability level in school and were usually in conflict with school, home, or peers. Tests used were selected on the basis of their helping to provide early identification. The subjects' oral and behavioral responses are presented, as well as ways of resolving the hearing problem. Some helpful counseling techniques are also presented.
