Abstract Morphologic differentiation among stocks of Mediterranean horse mackerel, Trachurus mediterraneus, throughout the Black, Marmara, Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean Seas, was investigated using morphometric and meristic characters. Discriminant function analysis of both morphometric and meristic characters suggested that there is restricted migration of mackerel among the adjacent seas. Overlapping of four Black sea samples on the discriminant space in morphometric and meristic characters suggested that there is one self-recruiting population in the area. The Marmara sea samples were the most isolated samples from all others for both morphometric and meristic characters, which may indicate existence of a distinguishable mackerel stock in the area. The sample from the Aegean Sea was grouped with one geographically close Mediterranean sample based on morphometrics, and separated from all other Mediterranean samples based on meristic characters, suggesting some degree of intermingling between these areas. Examination of the contribution of each morphometric variable to canonical functions indicated that differences among samples seemed to be associated with the anterior part of the body. In meristic analyses, highest contributions to canonical functions were associated with the number of gill rakers and pectoral fin rays.

Morphological variations of Tunisian Lithognathus mormyrus populations were investigated using 41 morphometric measurements (27 truss elements and 14 traditional measurements) and eight meristic characters collected from ten marine and lagoon samples. Statistical analyses (e.g. discriminant function analysis (DFA)) performed separately to truss and traditional data revealed a significant degree of morphological dissimilarity of lagoon samples (Bizerta, Ghar El Melh and El Biban lagoons). For these three lagoon environments the overall assignment of individuals into their original sample (percentage classification success) by DFA was 94% for truss elements and 98% for traditional measurements. This morphological discrimination among lagoon samples, revealed with traditional measurements, seems to be associated only with the anterior part of the body (especially with the pre-orbit and snout length). However, for truss analyses, it was explained by both anterior and posterior parts (peduncle region). Statistical analyses for only marine samples showed partial overlapping with significant morphometric variation of the Chebba and Gabès samples mainly related to the anterior part of the body, for the first sample, but also to the posterior region, for the second one. These morphometric variations are often due to environmental conditions and mainly to the exploitation of different ecological niches that are particularly limited by the availability, type and size of prey. Thus, truss and traditional approaches are complementary and provide more accurate explanations of such a morphological discrimination. Meristic character analyses showed homogeneity of striped seabream samples, except for the Ghar El Melh lagoon sample which quietly differed from the others. This distinction was mainly explained by the number of soft anal rays.

The study investigated the morphometric and meristic characterization of Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) sourced from Jos Bauchi and Ibadan (Nigeria). In comparing the morphometric and meristic characters one hundred and eighty (180) adult Common carp, Cyprinus carpio were used. Twenty four (24) morphometric and six (6) meristic characters were studied. Measurements of the morphometric features were taken to the nearest centimeter by means of a measuring board, measuring rule, pair of dividers for the length, while the weight was taken by means of a weighing scale (salter scale) to the nearest gram. ANOVA, multivariate technique principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant function analysis were also applied to the transformed morphometric data to; classify the fish into one or several mutually exclusive groups. The Morphometric study indicated that seven parameters did not differ significantly (p>0.05) between Jos (male and female), and Bauchi (male and Female) strains. The parameters are the body depth, caudal fin length, pectoral fin height, standard weight, pre dorsal distance, eye diameter and body weight. In the meristic count, only the dorsal fin spine did not differ significantly (p >0.05) among the Jos, Bauchi, and Ibadan strains in all sexes. The study revealed that there was a genetic distance between male and female Carp sourced from Ibadan and that of Jos and Bauchi, where as male and female Carp from Jos and Bauchi showed genetic closeness.

Fish metamorphosis is an important ontogenetic process with a key role on early stages survival and on successful recruitment to adult populations. The whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) is an important commercial resource for the coastal fisheries of Argentina and Uruguay. Metamorphosis, using morphometric and morphological analyses during larval development was studied. Changes in morpho-meristic characters before and after metamorphosis were employed to determine the length interval of this transition by employing Principal Component Analysis. Individuals (n=430) from 4 to 41 mm standard length (SL) were collected in the Río de la Plata estuary (35.45º S, 56.35º W) in March 2006. Length ranges of individual´s developmental stages were associated with the presence of key morphological characters. During early life stages, M. furnieri changes from a big-headed, robust shape larva to a slender and more elongated body form. Most of the morphometric variables showed an inflexion point at 15.2 mm SL, with a 95% confidence interval of 14.0 – 16.4 mm. The anterior part of the body grows faster during early stages, probably related to an intense feeding activity strategy. The completion of pectoral fin rays and the onset of squamation determine the beginning of metamorphosis at 11-12 mm SL. At around 18 mm SL, squamation ends, first barbels develop and the sagittae otolith primordium is closed. The length-at-metamorphosis for M. furnieri was established between 9 to 18 mm SL, since all developmental characters studied highly overlapped at that interval. All those processes are indicative of the beginning of the juvenile period associated to the settlement and the start of a bottom-oriented life-style.

For the treatment of patients with severe multysistem pelvic trauma accompanied by pelvic bleeding, many algorithms have been proposed that have different procedures for the use of various methods of surgical hemostasis, but none of them may guarantee the complete arrest of pelvic bleeding. The purpose of this study was to estimate clinical efficacy and developed algorithm, aimed at timely diagnosis of intrapelvic bleeding and its complete arrest with the help of different methods of surgical hemostasis in patients with severe concomitant injury of the pelvis. The article analyzes the results of treatment of 168 patients with unstable pelvic ring injuries and signs of intrapelvic bleeding, who were treated in two trauma centers of the first level in St. Petersburg: I.I. Dzhanelidze St. Petersburg Research Institute of Emergency Medicine and Military Surgery Clinic of S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy in 2010-2018. The victims were divided into two statistically homogeneous groups. In the comparison group (75 people), the pelvic ring was mechanically stabilized with the Ganz C-clamp or the anterior part of the pelvis was fixed with an external fixation device (EFD), and the arrest of the ongoing pelvic bleeding was expected due to occur due to the effect of biological tamponade. In the main group (93 people), after mechanical stabilization of the pelvic ring, various methods of surgical hemostasis were used: balloon occlusion of the aorta, pelvic tamponade, angiography with embolization. The choice of method for surgical haemostasis after trauma depended on the severity of the affected condition of hemodynamic parameters, availability of life-threatening consequences of damage to other areas of the body and the efficacy of previously applied method for intrapelvic bleeding arrest. The introduction of modern diagnostic and treatment algorithm, aimed at complete hemostasis in patients with ongoing intrapelvic bleeding reduced the overall mortality rate by 1.7 times, mortality within 24 hours of admission by 2.3 times, as well as the duration and the volume of blood transfusion therapy by 3 and 1.8 times.Authors declare lack of the conflicts of interests.

We present the development of a 3D full-lifecycle, individual-based model (IBM) for anchovy and sardine, online coupled to an existing hydrodynamic/biogeochemical low-trophic level (LTL) model for the North Aegean Sea. It was built upon an existing 1D model for the same species and area, with the addition of a horizontal movement scheme. In the model, both species evolve from the embryonic stage (egg+yolk sac larva) to the larval, juvenile, and adult stages. Somatic growth is simulated with the use of a “Wisconsin” type bioenergetics model and fish populations with an adaptation of the ‘super individuals’ (SI) approach. For the reference simulation and model calibration, in terms of fish growth and population biomass, the 2000-2010 period was selected. Interannual biomass variability of anchovy was successfully represented by the model, while the simulated biomass of sardine exhibited low variability and did not satisfactorily reproduce the observed interannual variability from acoustic surveys. The spatial distribution of both species’ biomass was in relatively good agreement with field data. Additional single-species simulations revealed that species compete for food resources. Temperature sensitivity experiments showed that both species reacted negatively to a temperature increase. Anchovy, in particular, was more affected since its spawning and larval growth periods largely overlap with the period of maximum yearly temperature and low prey concentration. Finally, simulation experiments using IPCC climatic scenarios showed that the predicted temperature increase and zooplankton concentration decrease in the future will negatively affect anchovy, resulting in sardine prevalence.

AbstractOne mature female specimen of serpent eel Ophisurus serpens (Linnaeus, 1758) was caught by long line by a professional fisherman at a depth of about 45 m from Ece Bight, Saros Bay, north Aegean Sea on 15 February 2016. The species was previously reported without any morphometric and meristic characters from Saros Bay. Some biological characters, such as age and diameters of otolith and oocytes, are also given. In this study, the detailed morphomeristic features, which can contribute to the taxonomic studies of serpent eel from Turkish Seas, are presented.
