Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) with high thermal stability and good corrosion resistance were synthesized in the (Cu0.6Hf0.25Ti0.15)100−x−yNiyNbx system by copper mold casting. The addition of Ni element causes an extension of a supercooled liquid region (ΔTx = Tx – Tg) from 60 K for Cu60Hf25Ti15 to 70 K for (Cu0.6Hf0.25Ti0.15)95Ni5. The simultaneous addition of Ni and Nb to the alloy is effective in improving synergistically the corrosion resistance in 1 N HCl, 3 mass% NaCl, and 1 N H2SO4 + 0.01 N NaCl solutions. The highly protective Hf-, Ti-, and Nb-enriched surface film is formed by the rapid initial preferential dissolution of Cu and Ni, which is responsible for the high corrosion resistance of the alloys in the solutions examined.

Paramagnetic Nd 60 Co 40-x Al x(x=5, 10, 15) bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) were prepared in the shape of rods 2 mm in diameter by suction casting. The ternary alloys have shown distinct glass transitions in Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) measurements and excellent glass-forming ability. The glass transition and crystallization behaviors as well as their kinetics have been studied. The reduced glass transition temperature and the supercooled liquid region of the alloys were found to increase with the increasing content of Al . The role of Al was discussed. The parameter γ defined by Liu et al. was employed to discuss the glass-forming ability of the alloys and the critical cooling rates as well as the critical section thickness of the alloys were predicted accordingly.

Viscous flow behavior in supercooled liquid region of as-cast and pre-annealed Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 bulk metallic glasses has been examined by using a penetration viscometer under high-speed heating rate of 20, 200 and 400 °C/min. Applied load for the cylindrical-shaped penetration indenter with a diameter of 1 mm was varied from 0.049 N to 0.294 N. Viscosity was quite independent of these applied loads. By pre-annealing the bulk metallic glasses at 400 °C, the density of the glasses increased, while the viscosity and the activation energy for viscous flow in their soopercooled liquid decreased with the pre-annealing treatments. Corresponding measurements of the differential thermal calorimetry (DSC) have been also done.
