Effect of Food Deprivation State on Food Intake Recall and Total Energy Reporting in Lean and Obese Women

To test the hypothesis that endogenous cholecystokinin (CCK) released from the small intestine by ingested food produces a satiating effect by acting at CCKA-receptors, we measured the effect of slow continuous intravenous infusions of three doses of MK-329, a potent and selective CCKA-antagonist, on food intake during 2.5-h tests in 13 Sprague-Dawley male rats after 1 h of food deprivation. MK-329 increased food intake significantly and the lowest dose tested (0.5 mg.kg-1.h-1) produced the most consistent effect on cumulative intake. Part of the increased food intake under these conditions was due to a decrease in the satiating effect of food ingested at the first meal on the postprandial intermeal interval. These results are consistent with, but do not prove, the hypothesis that the satiating effect of endogenous CCK released from the small intestine by ingested food is mediated by CCKA-receptors.

The diencephalic area most sensitive to microinjections of noradrenaline lay outside the area of the lateral hypothalamus in which feeding can be produced by electrical stimulation. Injection of either area, including injections that caused increased feeding, failed to have any effect on hoarding activity. Since hoarding can be elicited both by food deprivation and by electrical stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus, these findings indicate biochemical, anatomical and motivational differences between the central feeding mechanism sensitive to adrenergic stimulation, and that responding to electrical stimulation or nutritional depletion. The former mechanism may be disinhibitory; the latter, excitatory.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the food intake of sugarcane workers' family members. METHODS: The food intake of 159 family members of sugarcane workers from Gameleira, Pernambuco, Brazilian Northeast, was investigated by directly weighing the foods on three non-consecutive days. The percent risk of inadequate macro- and micronutrient intakes was analyzed according to the Reference Dietary Intakes. The macronutrients were analyzed in relation to acceptable distribution intervals. The energy consumed from the various food groups was expressed as a ratio of the total energy intake. RESULTS: The median intake of carbohydrates and proteins remained above the Estimated Average Requirement, and all age groups presented a low risk of inadequate carbohydrate and protein intakes. The median intakes of riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, and iron remained above the Estimated Average Requirement for all age groups, but children aged 1-3 years presented a high percent risk of inadequate iron intake. All age groups presented high percent risk of inadequate zinc, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C intakes. Grains and derivatives had a greater participation in the total energy intake, especially in men aged 19-30 years. The group "milk and dairy products" had a greater participation in the diet of children aged 1-3 years. CONCLUSION: The low percent risk of inadequate carbohydrate and protein intakes in all age groups was opposed to the high risk of inadequate mineral and vitamin intakes, making the population vulnerable to nutritional disorders caused by excess macronutrient intake and inadequate micronutrient intake.
