The medial temporal lobe (MTL) undergoes critical developmental change throughout childhood, which aligns with developmental changes in episodic memory. We used representational similarity analysis to compare neural pattern similarity for children and adults in hippocampus and parahippocampal cortex during naturalistic viewing of clips from the same movie or different movies. Some movies were more familiar to participants than others. Neural pattern similarity was generally lower for clips from the same movie, indicating that related content taxes pattern separation-like processes. However, children showed this effect only for movies with which they were familiar, whereas adults showed the effect consistently. These data suggest that children need more exposures to stimuli in order to show mature pattern separation processes.

Each individual experiences mental states in their own idiosyncratic way, yet perceivers are able to accurately understand a huge variety of states across unique individuals. How do they accomplish this feat? Do people think about their own anger in the same ways as another person’s? Is reading about someone’s anxiety the same as seeing it? Here, we test the hypothesis that a common conceptual core unites mental state representations across contexts. Across three studies, participants judged the mental states of multiple targets, including a generic other, the self, a socially close other, and a socially distant other. Participants viewed mental state stimuli in multiple modalities, including written scenarios and images. Using representational similarity analysis, we found that brain regions associated with social cognition expressed stable neural representations of mental states across both targets and modalities. This suggests that people use stable models of mental states across different people and contexts.

Worldview-3 satellite imagery provides panchromatic images with a high spatial resolution and visible near infrared (VNIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) bands with a low spatial resolution. These images can be used for various applications such as environmental analysis, urban monitoring and surveying for sustainability. In this study, mineral detection was performed using Worldview-3 satellite imagery. A pansharpening technique was applied to the spatial resolution of the panchromatic image to effectively utilize the VNIR and SWIR bands of Worldview-3 satellite imagery. The following representative similarity analysis techniques were implemented for the mineral detection: the spectral angle mapper (SAM), spectral information divergence (SID) and the normalized spectral similarity score (NS3). In addition, pixels that could be estimated to indicate minerals were calculated by applying an empirical threshold to each similarity analysis result. A majority voting technique was applied to the results of each similarity analysis and pixels estimated to indicate minerals were finally selected. The results of each similarity analysis were compared to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed methods. From that comparison, it could be confirmed that false negative and false positive rates decreased when the methods proposed in the present study were applied.

AbstractWhile genetic studies of epilepsies can be performed in thousands of individuals, phenotyping remains a manual, non-scalable task. A particular challenge is capturing the evolution of complex phenotypes with age. Here, we present a novel approach, applying phenotypic similarity analysis to a total of 3251 patient-years of longitudinal electronic medical record data from a previously reported cohort of 658 individuals with genetic epilepsies. After mapping clinical data to the Human Phenotype Ontology, we determined the phenotypic similarity of individuals sharing each genetic etiology within each 3-month age interval from birth up to a maximum age of 25 years. 140 of 600 (23%) of all 27 genes and 3-month age intervals with sufficient data for calculation of phenotypic similarity were significantly higher than expect by chance. 11 of 27 genetic etiologies had significant overall phenotypic similarity trajectories. These do not simply reflect strong statistical associations with single phenotypic features but appear to emerge from complex clinical constellations of features that may not be strongly associated individually. As an attempt to reconstruct the cognitive framework of syndrome recognition in clinical practice, longitudinal phenotypic similarity analysis extends the traditional phenotyping approach by utilizing data from electronic medical records at a scale that is far beyond the capabilities of manual phenotyping. Delineation of how the phenotypic homogeneity of genetic epilepsies varies with age could improve the phenotypic classification of these disorders, the accuracy of prognostic counseling, and by providing historical control data, the design and interpretation of precision clinical trials in rare diseases.

Self-circulation wellbore is a new technique for geothermal development in hot dry rocks (HDR), which uses a U-shape channel composed of tubing and casing as the heat exchanger. In this study, a self-circulation wellbore in HDR on a laboratory scale was built, and a serial of experiments were conducted to investigate the heat exchange law and the influencing factors on the heat mining rate of the wellbore. A similarity analysis was also made to estimate the heat-mining capacity of the wellbore on a field scale. The experimental results show that the large thermal conductivity and heat capacity of granite with high temperature can contribute to a large heat-mining rate. A high injection rate can cause a high convective heat transfer coefficient in wellbore, while a balance is needed between the heat mining rate and the outlet temperature. An inner tubing with low thermal conductivity can significantly reduce the heat loss to the casing annulus. The similarity analysis indicates that a heat mining rate of 1.25 MW can be reached when using a 2000 m long horizontal well section in a 150 °C HDR reservoir with a circulation rate of 602.8 m3/day. This result is well corresponding to the published data.
