The causes of atmospheric fine particles PM2.5 are complicated and are influenced by multiple factors conditions. Considering the analysis of the diffusion problem under the direction of the wind change, this paper proposes a gray theory and a new way of combining Gaussian plume model, namely the MGM - Gaussian plume diffusion model. Draw the diffusion area of PM2.5 under the influence of the wind.

This paper studies the innovation diffusion problem with the affection of urbanization, proposing a dynamical innovation diffusion model with fuzzy coefficient, and uses the shifting rate of people from rural areas stepping into urban areas to show the process of urbanization. The numerical simulation shows the diffusion process for telephones in China with Genetic Algorithms and this model is effective to show the process of innovation diffusion with the condition of urbanization process.

Abstract This study deals with the problem of diffusion for polydisperse colloids. The resolution of this complex problem usually requires computationally expensive numerical models. By considering the number of colloidal particles and their mass as independent variables, the equations of state for a dilute polydisperse colloid are derived on a statistical mechanics basis. Irreversible thermodynamics is then applied to obtain a simple two-moment diffusion model. The validity of the model is illustrated by comparing its results with those obtained by a classical size spectrum approach, in a sedimentation equilibrium problem and in an unsteady one-dimensional diffusion problem in Stokes–Einstein regime, and under the hypothesis that the size spectrum distribution is stochastic. In the first problem, the two-moment diffusion problem allows to represent rigorously the vertical size segregation induced by gravity, while in the second one, it allows a convenient description of the diffusion of polydisperse colloids by using two coupled diffusion equations, with an accuracy comparable with that of the classical size spectrum approach. The contribution of our work lies primarily in the application of a non-equilibrium thermodynamics methodology to a challenging issue of colloid modeling, namely, polydispersity, by going from statistical mechanics to the derivation of phenomenological coefficients, with the two-moment approach as a guideline.

Research using the Implicit Association Test (IAT) has shown that names labeled as Caucasian elicit more positive associations than names labeled as non-Caucasian. One interpretation of this result is that the IAT measures latent racial prejudice. An alternative explanation is that the result is due to differences in in-group/out-group membership. In this study, we conducted three different IATs: one with same-race Dutch names versus racially charged Moroccan names; one with same-race Dutch names versus racially neutral Finnish names; and one with Moroccan names versus Finnish names. Results showed equivalent effects for the Dutch-Moroccan and Dutch-Finnish IATs, but no effect for the Finnish-Moroccan IAT. This suggests that the name-race IAT-effect is not due to racial prejudice. A diffusion model decomposition indicated that the IAT-effects were caused by changes in speed of information accumulation, response conservativeness, and non-decision time.

Abstract. In experiments by Gibbs, Kushner, and Mills (1991) , sentences were supposedly either authored by poets or by a computer. Gibbs et al. (1991) concluded from their results that the assumed source of the text influences speed of processing, with a higher speed for metaphorical sentences in the Poet condition. However, the dependent variables used (e.g., mean RTs) do not allow clear conclusions regarding processing speed. It is also possible that participants had prior biases before the presentation of the stimuli. We conducted a conceptual replication and applied the diffusion model ( Ratcliff, 1978 ) to disentangle a possible effect on processing speed from a prior bias. Our results are in accordance with the interpretation by Gibbs et al. (1991) : The context information affected processing speed, not a priori decision settings. Additionally, analyses of model fit revealed that the diffusion model provided a good account of the data of this complex verbal task.
