Angiogenesis is essential to the survival, growth, invasion, and metastasis of various human solid tumors. We compared the microvessel density (MVD) and clinicopathologic features of two different groups of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), namely HCC with cirrhosis (HCC-C) and without cirrhosis (HCC-NC). A tissue microarray composed of 20 normal livers, 20 cirrhotic livers, tumor and adjacent background non-neoplastic liver tissues from 20 HCC-C and 20 HCC-NC were constructed and stained immunohistochemically with antibodies against the antigen CD34. The MVD was determined by the measurement of the area and density of CD34 positive sinusoidal endothelial cells using the Image Pro Plus software. There was a trend of increased MVD in cirrhotic liver compared to normal liver and in cirrhotic background non-neoplastic liver adjacent to the tumor compared to the non-cirrhotic background non-neoplastic liver. Tumor tissue of HCC-C and HCC-NC both showed significantly higher MVD than their adjacent background non-neoplastic liver tissue. There was no statistical difference in MVD between HCC-C and HCC-NC. A higher value of MVD was seen in tumors of intermediate size (5–10 cm), high histologic grade, the presence of lymphvascular space invasion, and the underlying etiology of hepatitis C and alcoholic steatohepatitis. This data indicates that MVD may play an important role in liver carcinogenesis and neoplastic progression. The difference in clinical behavior between HCC-C and HCC-NC does not seem to be associated with differences in tumor MVD. Objective measurement of MVD using standardized computer software could potentially be used as a clinical marker to predict patients’ prognosis.

Objective To explore the correlations of radiomic features of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) with microvessel density (MVD) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), based on single-input and dual-input two-compartment extended Tofts (SITET and DITET) models. Methods We compared the quantitative parameters of SITET and DITET models for DCE-MRI in 30 patients with HCC using paired sample t-tests. The correlations of SITET and DITET model parameters with CD31-MVD and CD34-MVD were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation analysis. A diagnostic model of CD34-MVD was established and the diagnostic abilities of models for MVD were analyzed using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis. Results There were significant differences between the quantitative parameters in the two kinds of models. Compared with SITET, DITET parameters showed better correlations with CD31-MVD and CD34-MVD. The Ktrans and Ve radiomics features of the DITET model showed high efficiency for predicting the level of CD34-MVD according to ROC analysis, with areas under curves of 0.83 and 0.94, respectively. Conclusion Compared with SITET, the DITET model provides a better indication of the microcirculation of HCC and is thus more suitable for examining patients with HCC.

Context.— Programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression in non–small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) is heterogeneous and known to be underestimated on small biopsies. Correlation of PD-L1 expression with clinicopathologic features may provide additional useful information. To our knowledge, the clinicopathologic features of NSCLC have not been reported for subsets defined by PD-L1 expression in either tumor cells or tumor-infiltrating immune cells. Objective.— To investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics of NSCLC subsets defined by PD-L1 expression in either tumor cells or tumor-infiltrating immune cells. Design.— PD-L1 immunohistochemistry with the SP142 clone was performed on whole-tissue sections and given semiquantitative scores (0/1/2/3) according to percent of PD-L1+ tumor cells (TCs) and percent tumor area with PD-L1+ tumor-infiltrating immune cells (ICs). Results.— Adenocarcinoma cases that were scored either TC 1/2/3 or IC 1/2/3 included most (22 of 34; 65%) high–histologic grade cases and most (25 of 36; 69%) solid subtype cases. Compared with the adenocarcinoma TC 0 and IC 0 subset, the TC 1/2/3 or IC 1/2/3 subset correlated with higher histologic grade (P = .005, χ2 test for trend) and solid subtype (P < .001, Fisher exact test). Compared with the adenocarcinoma TC 0/1 or IC 0/1 subset, the TC 2/3 or IC 2/3 subset correlated with higher histologic grade (P = .002, χ2 test for trend), solid subtype (P < .001, Fisher exact test), and higher smoking pack-years (P = .01, Mann-Whitney test). Conclusions.— Lung adenocarcinoma subsets defined by PD-L1 expression in either tumor cells or tumor-infiltrating immune cells correlated with high histologic grade, solid subtype, and high smoking pack-years.

A clinicopathological review of 23 patients (mean age, 67 years; range, 42–85 years) with chondrosarcoma of the bones of the hand was done. The mean follow up was 8.5 years. Eleven patients presented with a progressive painless swelling, 26% having had symptoms for over 10 years. The proximal phalanx was the commonest site. Initial clinical misdiagnosis as ganglion, bursa, gout, rheumatoid arthritis and a cyst occurred in five patients. Radiologically most lesions showed bone expansion, cortical destruction and soft-tissue extension. The majority was of high histologic grade (Evan’s grade 2 & 3) with extensive myxoid areas. Five out of eight patients who were originally treated by curettage or excision had local recurrences compared to none treated by ray resection or amputation of phalanx ( P=0.002). None had metastases. The low risk of metastases despite the high histologic grade indicates that chondrosarcomas of the hand behave differently from chondrosarcomas elsewhere.
