ABSTRACT

Handeuleum (Graptophyllum pictum L.Griff) is a medicinal plant widely used as a traditional medicine due to its benefecial content. Therefore, it should be developed as one of the leading Indonesian medicinal plants. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of gamma ray irradiation on morphological alteration and growth of Handeuleum accession from Bogor. The doses of gamma rays were 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, and 105 Gy. The results of the research showed that gamma-ray irradiation induced morphological changes and influences the growth of Handeuleum. Irradiation dose at rate of 105 Gy produced new leaf morphology in Handeuleum, namely cordate. Doses of 60, 75, 90, and 105 Gy produce stunted plants with stiff and yellowish-green leaves. The dose of 45 Gy produced relative green color index which was higher than the control plants.

Keywords: handeuleum, gamma irradiations

The paper investigates a possibility of pMOS dosimeter re-use for the measurement of gamma-ray irradiation. The dosimeters were irradiated to the dose of 35 Gy, annealed at room and elevated temperatures, after which they were irradiated again to the same dose value. Changes in the threshold voltage shift during those processes were followed, and it was shown that their re-use depends on a gate polarization during irradiation. For the gate polarization of 5 V during irradiation the pMOS dosimeters can be re-used for measurements of the irradiation dose after annealing without prior calibration. The pMOS dosimeters with the gate polarization during irradiation of 2.5 V can also be re-used for irradiation dose measurements but they require calibration. It is shown that for their re-use it is necessary to anneal the pMOS dosimeter so that the fading is higher than 50%.

The influence of 60Co gamma-ray irradiation on the chemical compositions and properties of an epoxy encapsulant was investigated. The total irradiation dose varied from 0.1 kGy to 100 kGy with a fixed dose rate of 500 Gy/h. Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and discoloration proved the occurrence of oxidation caused by the irradiation. Tg and density remained unchanged owing to the competing effects of irradiation-induced degradation and crosslinking. The tensile strength, impact strength and electrical strength did not decrease distinctly until the irradiation dose reached above 11 kGy. Rubbery coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CTE), relative permittivity and dissipation factor, on the contrary, were more sensitive to the oxidation and increased sharply when the irradiation dose was only 0.1 kGy. Our results suggested that the evolution of CTEs and dielectric properties could affect the long-term application and reliability of the epoxy encapsulant in the irradiative environment.
