Abstract Mn activated optical materials have been demonstrated to be promising for various applications such as light-emitting device, tunable lasers and smart sensors. Most of the candidates belong to the single crystals and crystalline powders and few reports involve about the glass-derived materials. In this letter, we report the fabrication of active Mn-doped nanostructured glass sample via control of the crystallization of a typical gallogermanate glass. LiGa5O8 and LiGaGeO4 can precipitate after heat-treatment and Mn centers selectively incorporate into the crystalline phase. Importantly, the luminescence can be switched from red to green color and the intensity can be simultaneously enhanced. Furthermore, the luminescence properties can be tuned via control of the phase of the nanostructured glass. The approach should be general to various transition metal dopant, thus may potentially pave an effective way for functionalization of glass and expand the category of the active optical materials.

Abstract. In this work was investigate the corrosion behavior of the TiNi alloy in a coarse-grained state in inorganic field with different concentration and holding time. An increase in the concentration of the solution leads to a significant acceleration of corrosion processes in the Ti49.1Ni50.9 alloy with a high Ni content, including until the samples are completely dissolved. It was revealed that solutions of 1 M sulfuric and hydrochloric acids after a month's exposure did not change in color and no precipitations were found, while solutions of 5 M hydrochloric and sulfuric acids acquired a violet and then green color, which is due to the predominant release of titanium ions (+4) and nickel (+2).

Lettuce is the most important leafy vegetable in Brazil. Hydroponic lettuce cultivation has grown due to the viability of harvesting throughout the year. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the agronomic characteristics, color, and preference of curly lettuce in the NFT hydroponic system. Six lineages (6601-1A, 6601-2L, 7016-6A, 7119-1B, 7223-1A, and 7224-4A) and two commercial cultivars (Brida and Vanda) of lettuce were used, in a completely randomized blocks design with four replications. Shoot length, root length, stem length, number of leaves, stem diameter, plant diameter, shoot fresh mass, root fresh mass, chlorophyll content, instrumental color, and sensory characteristics were evaluated. As for agronomic evaluation, the bolting of 6601-2L lettuce was relevant in different attributes. The Vanda lettuce and the lineage 7016-6A presented best performances for shoot fresh mass (399.44 and 378.63 g, respectively), while the lineages 7119-1B and 6601-2L present the worst performance (279.50 and 273.13 g, respectively). There was variation in chlorophyll content and luminosity, however, the evaluators did not notice differences between lettuces for brightness or green color, as well as for crunchy texture. Lettuces 6601-2L, 7224-4A, 6601-1A, Brida, 7223-1A, and 7119-1B were preferred. The variation among plants may be due to different situations, such as harvesting times and bolting, and a direct relationship between agronomic properties and preference among lettuces has not been established yet.

The dicarbon molecule (C2) is found in flames, comets, stars, and the diffuse interstellar medium. In comets, it is responsible for the green color of the coma, but it is not found in the tail. It has long been held to photodissociate in sunlight with a lifetime precluding observation in the tail, but the mechanism was not known. Here we directly observe photodissociation of C2. From the speed of the recoiling carbon atoms, a bond dissociation energy of 602.804(29) kJ·mol−1 is determined, with an uncertainty comparable to its more experimentally accessible N2 and O2 counterparts. The value is within 0.03 kJ·mol−1 of high-level quantum theory. This work shows that, to break the quadruple bond of C2 using sunlight, the molecule must absorb two photons and undergo two “forbidden” transitions.

ABSTRACT Curly and smooth kale hybrids grown in both field (conventional) and hydroponic systems were sensory-analyzed using the descriptive and affective sensory technique. The treatments comprised hydroponic-cultivated Darkibor (A), Darkibor cultivated in field (B), HS2O (C), Arielli (D) and Kobe (E), these last three cultivated under conventional system (field-cultivated). The panelists indicated the significant attributes that described the differences in kale sensory profiles. Darkibor (A) and Arielli (D) kale leaves had the lightest green color. Regarding their format, the kales were classified into smooth and curly. Both the Darkibor grown in field (B) and Arielli (D) had the most intense bitter taste. Darkibor (A) showed the highest intensity for sweet taste, followed by Arielli (D). The field-cultivated Darkibor (B) ranked the highest crispness and mouthfeel (sensation produced by a particular food in the mouth). The color and texture of the kale leaves affected purchase intention by the consumer, and the color showed a difference among the kales, with Darkibor kale (A) receiving the lowest score. Darkibor (A) obtained lower buying-likelihood scores, reinforcing that color affects consumers’ purchase intention.

Anthocyanins are the largest group of polyphenolic pigments in the plant kingdom. These non-toxic, water-soluble compounds are responsible for the pink, red, purple, violet, and blue colors of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Anthocyanins are widely used in the production of food, cosmetic and textile products, in the latter case to replace synthetic dyes with natural and sustainable alternatives. Here, we describe an environmentally benign method for the extraction of anthocyanins from red chicory and their characterization by HPLC-DAD and UPLC-MS. The protocol does not require hazardous solvents or chemicals and relies on a simple and scalable procedure that can be applied to red chicory waste streams for anthocyanin extraction. The extracted anthocyanins were characterized for stability over time and for their textile dyeing properties, achieving good values for washing fastness and, as expected, a pink-to-green color change that is reversible and can therefore be exploited in the fashion industry.

In the Bazhenovskoye chrysotile–asbestos deposit (Middle Urals), nephrite bodies of the serpentinite type were found on the contact of after gabbro rodingites and serpentinites. The color is uniform to non-uniform, green to light green, bluish green, greyish green, and whitish. Spots, streaks, lenticules of bright bluish-green or, on the contrary, light green color are sometimes noted. The nephrite is mostly comprised of tremolite. Chromite decreases the quality of the ornamental stone, but it is replaced by chrome grossular, which gives the nephrite a brighter bluish-green color locally. Crushed grains of chromite contain increased concentrations of Zn and Mn. The quality of the nephrite is decreased by serpentine and talc, as well as by fractures due to drilling and blasting works. The specific feature of the nephrite in the Bazhenovskoye deposit is the formation of nickeline, maucherite, and uvarovite. The green color is associated with Fe2+ ions. The nephrite of the Bazhenovskoye deposit meets the requirements for an ornamental stone. The origin of this nephrite includes a combination of metasomatic and metamorphic processes.

In this study, the effects of four different digitally generated colored filters on the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue test (100-hue test) are analyzed by red-green color-vision deficient (CVD) observers. We digitally simulate the colored filters based on the spectral transmittance of four colored filters, which have been used previously. Five red-green CVD observers are subjected to the 100-hue test on a monitor under nine filter conditions, which comprise one condition without filter and eight conditions with filters. The results suggest that a colored filter that transmits long wavelengths and absorbs medium wavelengths may improve the color discrimination performance of protans and deutans.
