BACKGROUND: This study explored the impact of a fatigue management health education intervention (FMI) on flight attendants fatigue management knowledge, attitudes, behavioral intention, self-efficacy, and fatigue intensity.METHODS: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was used. The sample included 70 flight attendants of an international airline company in Taiwan. The experimental group (N 34) received an FMI, while the control group (N 36) had no intervention. Fatigue management knowledge, attitude, behavior intention, self-efficacy, and fatigue intensity were assessed at baseline and 1 wk later. Single-factor analysis of covariance and Jensen Neman methods were used to assess the differences in outcomes between the two groups.RESULTS: Attitude and self-efficacy in the experimental group were significantly improved after the FMI [standardized mean difference (SMD), 0.96; 1.98]. The intervention also reduced their fatigue intensity (SMD 6.05) and both knowledge and behavioral intention scores were increased in more than 80% of subjects in the experimental group.DISCUSSION: FMI can effectively improve fatigue management knowledge, attitudes, behavioral intention, and self-efficacy and reduce fatigue intensity in flight attendants.Hu CJ, Lee FP, Hong RM. Fatigue is a common, secondary symptom of endometriosis that has not been qualitatively explored. We conducted individual, face-to-face interviews with 25 women in South Africa about their experiences of endometriosis-related fatigue. Participants were recruited at a public hospital in Cape Town and through several South African endometriosis organizations. Interviews were conducted in English and Afrikaans and ranged from 30 min to 1 hr 16 min in duration. All interviews were audio recorded and transcribed. Interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. We found that both the experience of fatigue and fatigue-management strategies were highly personalized. Participants reported using a variety of cognitive strategies, such as planning, pacing, and pushing through their fatigue to reduce the levels of fatigue. Participants also employed physical strategies such as rest, dietary changes, using supplements, and exercise. We found that while participants often tried fatigue-management strategies suggested to them by others, they struggled to maintain these strategies even when they were successful. There are currently no interventions aimed at reducing endometriosis-related fatigue. The findings of this study provide insight into the management of fatigue in women with endometriosis and may be used to develop a psychosocial intervention for fatigue among women with the disease.

This study’s purpose was to describe changes in symptom distress and fatigue characteristics identifying which symptoms significantly impacted fatigue characteristics of patients with Gastric Cancer (GC) within 1 month after gastrectomy. A prospective longitudinal study was conducted. Patients with GC who were scheduled for gastrectomy were recruited from surgical outpatient clinics and surgery wards in northern Taiwan. Data were collected using a set of questionnaires before (T0) and 7 (T1) and 28 days (T2) after gastrectomy. Over all, 86 patients experienced mild levels of fatigue and symptom distress. The changes in worst fatigue and fatigue interference were greatest at T1. Anxiety had a significant negative effect on both worst fatigue and fatigue interference. Dry mouth, pain, and body image had significant deleterious effects on worst fatigue. The co-occurring symptoms affecting fatigue for patients with GC in the acute phase after gastrectomy should be actively assessed to ensure optimal fatigue management.

Reliability based design optimization (RBDO) of a steel catenary riser (SCR) using metamodel is investigated. The purpose of the optimization is to find the minimum-cost design subjecting to probabilistic constraints. To reduce the computational cost of the traditional double-loop RBDO, a single-loop RBDO approach is employed. The performance function is approximated by using metamodel to avoid time consuming finite element analysis during the dynamic optimization. The metamodel is constructed though design of experiments (DOE) sampling. In addition, the reliability assessment is carried out by Monte Carlo simulations. The result shows that the RBDO of SCR is a more rational optimization approach compared with traditional deterministic optimization, and using metamodel technique during the dynamic optimization process can significantly decrease the computational expense without sacrificing accuracy.
