Biometric identification is an up and coming authentication method. The growing complexity of and overlap between smart devices, usability patterns and security risks make a strong case for securer and safer user authentication. This paper aims to offer a broad literature review on iris recognition and biometric cryptography to better understand current practices, propose possible future enhancements and anticipate possible future usability and security developments.

This chapter tries to answer the question on how international consumers differ in their perceptions of mobile advertising. In order to answer this research question a survey among mobile phone users was carried out in Austria and in Japan. These two countries have been selected because they show a high dissimilarity in culture, in historical terms but also in the degree of technological development and usage. Both countries experienced a similar economic development and show comparable living standards. Furthermore, Japan and Austria are leading markets for advanced mobile technology in their geographic areas. On the basis of the literature review, variables picturing perceptions of mobile advertising are defined, hypotheses in comparing consumer perspectives in the respective countries presented and results of the MANOVA analysis shown and discussed. Finally, the paper presents theoretical and managerial implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research on this issue.

The purpose of this study was to examine the education of gifted children in Turkey during 1923–2020 from an historical perspective and to evaluate the current practices in gifted education. Drawing from the literature review, we first report on the policies and the legal and corporate advancements implemented in the field of gifted education since the Declaration of the Republic. Subsequently, current practices in Turkey, including Science and Arts Centres, high schools for gifted students, and resource rooms, are evaluated. The results of a review of the relevant literature are discussed in the light of the current situation. In conclusion, it is understood that coherent and consistent policies in the field of gifted education have been developed more strongly in Turkey during the last 30 years, corporate advancements have also increased during this period, and scientific studies have gained an upward enhancement during the last 20 years. Despite all these advancements, it is concluded that current practices have still various deficiencies and should continue to be developed.

In this contribution, we investigate the privacy implications of social robots as an emerging mobile technology. Drawing on a scoping literature review and expert interviews, we show how social robots come with privacy implications that go beyond those of established mobile technology. Social robots challenge not only users’ informational privacy but also affect their physical, psychological, and social privacy due to their autonomy and potential for social bonding. These distinctive privacy challenges require study from varied theoretical perspectives, with contextual privacy and human–machine communication emerging as particularly fruitful lenses. Findings also point to an increasing focus on technological privacy solutions, complementing an evolving legal landscape as well as a strengthening of user agency and literacy.

This chapter focuses on the relation between mass consumption and political consumerism. Mass consumption concerns the omnipresent role of consumption in contemporary societies with associated problems of excessive resource use in current practices of consumption. The late modern context and forces of mass consumption can both trigger and prevent political consumerism as well as shape its outcome. The chapter offers a literature review that addresses both examples of alternative consumption (e.g., buycotts) and various kinds of anticonsumption, which involve politically motivated ambitions to cut down on consumption. The chapter addresses how mass consumption activates political consumerist potentials, including sentiments towards anticonsumption. It furthermore shows how mass consumption makes people unable to link consumption to political considerations. Finally, the chapter analyses possibilities and difficulties in transforming niche political consumerist initiatives to the mainstream in a society that is dominated by mass consumption.

The present chapter provides an analysis of the possible applications of the TAM (Technology Acceptance Model) for the study of the mobile technology acceptance process at the higher education level, through a literature review on the state of the art. With this aim in mind, the chapter will start by presenting the theoretical principles of the TAM model and its evolution. After that, the authors will describe the state of the research on the topic, first within the field of education in general, to focus then on the university level, and finally on mobile learning specifically. Throughout the analysis, the most significant studies will be highlighted as an example. Lastly, the authors will provide some brief conclusions and proposals for future lines of research derived from the consulted literature.
