Most information about a specimen is obtained by elastic scattering of electrons, but one cannot avoid inelastic scattering and therefore radiation damage by ionisation as a primary process of damage. This damage is a dose effect, being proportional to the product of lectron current density j and the irradiation time t in Coul.cm−2 as long as there is a negligible heating of the specimen.Therefore one has to determine the dose needed to produce secondary damage processes, which can be measured quantitatively by a chemical or physical effect in the thin specimen. The survival of micro-organisms or the decrease of photoconductivity and cathodoluminescence are such effects needing very small doses (see table).

Abstract. Negative life events associated with deliberate self-harm (DSH) were investigated in an African context in Uganda. Patients admitted at three general hospitals in Kampala, Uganda were interviewed using a Luganda version (predominant language in the study area) of the European Parasuicide Study Interview Schedule I. The results of the life events and histories module are reported in this paper. The categories of negative life events in childhood that were significantly associated with DSH included those related to parents, significant others, personal events, and the total negative life events load in childhood. For the later-life time period, the negative life events load in the partner category and the total negative life events in this time period were associated with DSH. In the last-year time period, the negative life events load related to personal events and the total number of negative life events in this time period were associated with DSH. A statistically significant difference between the cases and controls for the total number of negative life events reported over the entire lifetime of the respondents was also observed, which suggests a dose effect of negative life events on DSH. Gender differences were also observed among the cases. In conclusion, life events appear to be an important factor in DSH in this cultural environment. The implication of these results for treatment and the future development of suicide interventions in this country are discussed.

SummaryIn the beginning of medical radiology, only the benefit of ionizing radiation was obvious, and radiation was handled and applied generously. After late effects had become known, the radiation exposure was reduced to doses following which no such effects were found. Thus, it was assumed that one could obtain an optimal medical benefit without inducing any hazard. Later, due to experimental findings, hypotheses arose (linear dose-effect response, no time factor) which led to the opinion that even low and lowest radiation doses were relevant for the induction of late effects. A radiation fear grew, which was unintentionally strengthened by radiation protection decrees: even for low doses a radiation risk could be calculated. Therefore, it was believed that there could still exist a radiation hazard, and the radiation benefit remained in question. If, however, all presently known facts are considered, one must conclude that large radiation doses are hazardous and low doses are inefficient, whereas lowest doses have a biopositive effect. Ionizing radiation, therefore, may cause both, hazard as well as benefit. Which of the two effects prevails is determined by the level of dose.

Arterial endothelium produces a large ramge of active factors which are indispensable for modulation of vasomotor tone and maintenance of vascular wall integrity. From these factors, nitric oxide (NO), wich is released by the endothelial cells as a response to acetylcholine or adenosine action on specific receptors, plays an important role.NO is the result of oxidation process of L-arginine into L-citrulline, under the action of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOSe), wich is activated by intracelluar Ca2+ - calmodulin complex . Our study, performed in isolated organ bath, analyzed vascular reactivity of 12 guinea pigs� thoracic aorta rings. After phenylephrine -PHE 10-5 mol/L precontraction, the dose-effect curves for acetylcoline � ACH, adenosine 5� phosphate - 5�ADP and sodium nitroprusside � SNP were determined, before and after incubation of preparation, for 1 hour, with 5% hydrosoluble cigarettes smoke extract (CSE). Statistic analysis, performed with the use of t pair test and ANOVA parametric test, showed that incubation of vascular preparation with 5% CSE has increased the contractile response to PHE 10-5 mol/L (p[0.05), has reduced the endothelium-dependent relaxing response to ATP 10-5 mol/L (p[0.001) and 5�ADP 10-5 molo/L (p[0.001), but has not significantly modified the endothelium-independent relaxing response to SNP 10-5 mol/L (p=0.05). As a conclusion, vascular rings incubation with 5% CSE induced a decrease of endothelium NO synthesis under the action of AXH and 5�ADP, but did not change the smooth muscle fiber respomse in the presence of NO released by SNP.

Background: The study focuses on the synthesis of chitosan/ Fe2O3 nanocomposite, its characterization and application in methyl orange dye degradation. Methods: The synthesized chitosan/ Fe2O3 nanocomposite was characterized with Powder X-Ray Diffraction, Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and UV-Vis Spectroscopy. Results: The characterization showed that the Fe2O3nanoparticles were embedded in the polymer matrix of chitosan. The size of the Fe2O3nanoparticles were less than 10nm and the crystallite size was 1.22 nm.The synthesized chitosan/ Fe2O3nanocomposite was tested for methyl orange degradation using different parameters such as effect of contact time, effect of dose, effect of concentration and effect of pH for the degradation of methyl orange dye in aqueous solution.The Fruendlich, Langmuir and Temkin isotherm studies were also conducted for adsoption of methyl orange on Chitosan/ Fe2O3nanocomposite. Conclusion: The study indicated that the synthesized chitosan/Fe2O3 nanocomposite had the potential of degrading methyl orange dye up to 75.04% under the set condition in this experiment which indicate that Chitosan/ Fe2O3 nanocomposite is a viable option that can be used for the degradation of methyl orange dye.

This chapter describes neurologic disorders related primarily to occupational exposures along with presenting signs and symptoms. Acute or subacute occupational exposure to high levels of neurotoxic compounds, which occurred in the past and resulted in unique presentations of neurological disorders, occur infrequently today. Sections include the evaluation of toxic neuropathies and the approach to neurobehavioral impairment along with the cognitive domains commonly affected with exposure to neurointoxicants. A section describes the approach to a patient with exposure to neurointoxicants that includes the need for a temporal association between exposure and effect, a dose-effect relationship, biological plausibility, and other causes eliminated Effects of selected neurotoxins are described, including carbon monoxide, lead, organic solvents, and manganese.
