Bridge expansion and contraction installation (BECI) has proved to be an indispensable component of bridge structures due to its stability, comfort, and durability benefits. At present, conventional replacement technologies for modular-type, comb plate-type, and seamless-type BECIs are widely applied worldwide. However, it is unfortunate that there remains no systematic research on quantitative assessment approaches for evaluating the overall technical status and selecting optimal replacement methods for existing BECIs. Therefore, considering the installation performance according to functional index evaluations and the economic cost based on life-cycle value assessment (LCVA), a standardized quantitative assessment approach is proposed for optimal replacement method selection in this article. Simultaneously, the other new quantitative assessment method is developed for evaluating the overall technical status of BECIs, which provides a basis for the necessity of replacement. A BECI replacement decision system is constructed, and a corresponding case study illustrates that the proposed system based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) in this article proves to be reasonable and feasible. The results reveal that the selected replacement method with both a higher function coefficient and a lower economic coefficient can not only fulfil the performance requirements but also pursue a cost reduction, which leads to a considerable value increment. This system can effectively assist bridge managers in making appropriate operation and maintenance (O and M) decisions in actual engineering projects.

With the rapid development of China's transportation and the improvement of people's living standards, China's highways have entered the peak maintenance period. According to the old road conditions and financial conditions, how to choose the appropriate maintenance technology to meet the technical and economic requirements of highway maintenance and construction projects has become a difficult problem faced by highway maintenance management departments. Therefore, based on the principle of index selection, this study comprehensively considered the impact of various factors on maintenance decision-making, determined four evaluation indexes, and systematically studied the compre-hensive decision-making system of asphalt pavement recycling maintenance. Based on the subjective-objective linkage and probability statistics method, the eigenvalue of the applicability of recycling mode was transformed to the same scale of 0 to 100, and the fuzzy scoring interval of the four bids was proposed. The calculation method of pavement quality recovery index (PQRI) and the analysis basis of economic benefits were clarified. Finally, the weight of each index was calculated by analytic hierarchy process, and the multi-index comprehensive decision-making method of pavement maintenance is constructed and used to theoretically verify and guide the actual road section. Results demonstrate that the proposed PQRI can realize the operability of quantifying the later operation of pavement. The weight of each index from big to small is PQRI > economic benefit > applicability of recycling mode. The recycled pavement quality recovery indices and applicability of the four recycling modes have small differences, and the proposed four bids interval makes the decision-making evaluation process more simple and explicit. The decision evaluation results of actual road section verify the rationality and practicability of the decision method. The conclusions are important for the maintenance and management of asphalt pavement recycling technology. Keywords: road engineering, recycling maintenance, intelligent decision-making, fuzzy evaluation

Objectives: To identify early suicide risk signs on depressive subjects, so that specialized care can be provided. Various studies have focused on studying expressions on social networks, where users pour their emotions, to determine if they show signs of depression or not. However, they have neglected the quantification of the risk of committing suicide. Therefore, this article proposes a new index for identifying suicide risk in Mexico. Methodology: The proposal index is constructed through opinion mining using Twitter and the Analytic Hierarchy Process. Contribution: Using R statistical package, a study is presented considering real data, making a classification of people according to the obtained index and using information from psychologists. The proposed methodology represents an innovative prevention alternative for suicide.

Urbanization is a challenge faced by most countries worldwide and leads to several problems. Due to rapid communication capabilities, conforming the megacities into Ubiquitous cities (U-cities) seems to be a potential solution to mitigate the problems caused by urbanization. Extensive reliance and dependencies of U-cities on information and communication technologies (ICTs) bring forth a new set of risks and vulnerabilities to these megacities. This research investigates the vulnerabilities of ICTs against man-made and natural hazards in a systematic way using the Analytic Hierarchy Process. The study identifies the vulnerabilities of different ICTs in U-cities and helps in improving the system’s resistivity against various hazards. The task is performed by evaluating the level of disruption on the different technologies and areas under the identified man-made and natural hazards. The research provides an insight into the working mechanisms of involved ICTs. It also helps to manage U-cities with more secure and sustainable services. The research identified that the new ICTs-based hazards have emerged and have become among the most influential hazards. The research has concluded that the vulnerabilities of U-cities are significantly different from that of conventional cities and need further studies to develop further understandings. The research recommends similar vulnerability studies for regional areas as well.
