This paper aims to review the development of ESP Syllabus design theory and material adaptation based on the need’s analysis of the students. Besides, it explores and presents the references on the relationship between ESP syllabus design and material adaptation. ESP syllabus design deals with the kinds and importance of a syllabus. The materials in it discuss authenticity, material evaluation, and material writing. Need analysis covers the meaning, type, practice, and register of an analysis.

ESP is considered the best choice in tertiary education context as it meets the students’ needs and consequently boosts motivation. However, the results of needs analysis applied while designing the course and the students’ awareness of their needs when using the language in professional communication may differ. The survey of 1st year students conducted at Sechenov University (Moscow, Russia) between 2014 and 2019 revealed only partial awareness of the needs. The possible solution may be either creating ‘first-hand’ experience (students’ exposure to the situations where they have to use respective ESP skills), or ‘second-hand’ experience (students’ exposure to communication with professionals in their prospective sphere of employment who are regularly using ESP skills).

The marketing staff has an important role to develop a company since they are responsible for finding customers and promoting company’s products. Therefore, PT Dharma Medipro whose customers are foreigners requires its marketing staff to improve their English by providing them an English course. Before designing the course, needs analysis was conducted through questionnaires that were distributed to the marketing staff and an interview with a marketing manager to obtain more insights about marketing staff’s job descriptions. Some of the marketing staff were also interviewed. Afterwards, the results of the needs analysis were interpreted to design a syllabus for them. It is believed that the syllabus based on learners’ needs will be more effective and learners’ goal to learn English can be achieved as well. The results indicate that the participants need to improve all skills, particularly speaking and listening. Hence, the proposed syllabus combines structure, functions and situations relevant for the marketing staff of PT Dharma Medipro.

Key words: marketing staff, ESP, needs analysis, syllabus design
