Abstract In the practice of mining companies, the vast majority of them produce more than one product. The analysis of the break-even, which is referred to as CVP (Cost-Volume-Profit) analysis (Wilkinson, 2005; Czopek, 2003) in their case is significantly constricted, given the necessity to include multi-assortment structure in the analysis, which may have more than 20 types of assortments (depending on the grain size) in their offer, as in the case of open-pit mines. The article presents methods of evaluation of break-even (volume and value) for both a single-assortment production and a multi-assortment production. The complexity of problem of break-even evaluation for multi-assortment production has resulted in formation of many methods, and, simultaneously, various approaches to its analysis, especially differences in accounting fixed costs, which may be either totally accounted for among particular assortments, relating to the whole company or partially accounted for among particular assortments and partially relating to the company, as a whole. The evaluation of the chosen methods of break-even analysis, given the availability of data, was based on two examples of mining companies: an open-pit mine of rock materials and an underground hard coal mine. The selection of methods was set by the available data provided by the companies. The data for the analysis comes from internal documentation of the mines – financial statements, breakdowns and cost calculations.

The role of adaptation as an interdisciplinary phenomenon and the necessity of its evolvement in engineering sciences, including mining, is stated. The notion of “open pit transportation system adaptation” is defined. The research was aimed to justify the choice of a methodology for adapting transportation systems in open pit mines, as well as to demonstrate possibility of the transportation system behavior determination and forecasting. In accordance with the definition, the state of a transportation system in the course of adaptation is described. It is shown that the theory of transportation systems for open pits and the theoretical principles are the mainframe. The theory features flexibility, is continuously developed and upgraded, meets the recent methodological standards and can serve the basis of structural and parametric adaptation. The case-studies of the efficient problem solution in mining using the universal simulation model of transportation system functioning in open pit mines developed at the Institute of Mining, Ural Branch RAS are presented. The scope of the applied research embraced: validation of parameters for loading-and-rehandling points in the dump truck- belt-rail transport flowcharts; determination of carrying capacity of rail tracks in open pits; justification of transportation system parameters for open pit mines based on the interactive modeling. The theoretical methodology framework for transportation system adaptation in open pit mines is presented, which is the joint application of the theory of transportation systems in deep open pit mines in structural and structural-and-parametric adaptation and the universal interactive simulation model of transportation system functioning in open pits in parametric adaptation.

Assessment of the shovel-truck system (STS) operation quality is based on the well-known method of non-expert assessment of the quality of mining machines. The methodology is based on the fundamental principles of qualimetry and allows making the assessment of functionally homogeneous machines of different sizes, types and designs based on the functional criterion of the machine, which determines its main purpose. In this work, the quality assessment is made not for a single machine, but for a set of machines, taking into account their interaction. Assessment of the STS operation quality allows us to create a basis for the selection of priority areas for its improvement. The work uses methods of mathematical modeling, data collection and processing, statistics, analysis and synthesis. A comprehensive quality assessment makes it possible to predict the level and select priority areas for improving existing STSs or STSs being projected.

Chernogosky open pit mine integrates truck-and-shovel system of mining with overburden rehandling to internal dump with a set of walking excavators for rehandling of overburden to mined-out area of the pit. It is possible to improve efficiency of stripping in the conditions of Chernogorsky OPM by reducing percentage of stripping with more expensive handling system. The relevant research and solutions to this effect are presented in this article. Comparative characterization of mining conditions and parameters of mining systems applied is given for open pit mines Chernogorsky, Turnui, Nazarovsky, Vostochno-Beisky and Izykh. The comparative analysis points at the need to account for difficulty of mining and process sites in comparison of equipment productivity. High concentration of mining machines, which is conditioned by narrow mining front and simultaneous operation of five faces, as well as blasting operation implemented every 1-2 days, are recognized as the main constraints of excavator capacity in mining with direct dumping in Chernogorsky open pit mine. The management and engineering solutions implemented in the mine and resulted in higher efficiency of draglines are described.
