The irregular fracture surface of cortical bone, which is caused by complex multilevel micro-nanostructure, reflects the mechanical properties and fracture mechanisms. It is of great significance to characterize some characteristic parameters from the fracture surfaces of bone. In this research, anisotropic fracture mechanical properties of bovine femoral cortical bone along transverse, longitudinal and radial direction are firstly obtained by three-point bend experiment. Then the fracture routes and fracture surfaces are observed by scanning electron microscope. The observation shows that the formed fracture surfaces, which are caused by different crack routes, are extremely rough and have complex textures. Lastly, the combined method of fractal and gray level co-occurrence matrix are adopted to describe the morphology of fracture surface of cortical bone objectively and quantitatively. It is shown that the fracture surface of cortical bone has obvious fractal characteristics and four statistical texture feature parameters (contrast, angular second moment, correlation and entropy) of GLCM of fracture surfaces can describe a certain fracture texture character. The relationship between the characteristic parameters and macroscopic mechanical properties are established. The quantitative analysis and automatic class identification for the fracture surfaces of cortical bone can be achieved.

Different stress distributions for an elastic behavior are presented as analytical expressions for an ideal crack, a sharp notch and a blunt notch. The elastic plastic distribution at a blunt notch tip is analyzed. The concept of the notch stress intensity factor is deduced from the definition of the effective stress and the effective distance. The impacts of the notch radius and constraint on the critical notch stress intensity factor are presented. The paper ends with the presentation of the crack driving force Jρ for a notch in the elastic case and the impact of the notch radius on the notch fracture toughness Jρ,c. The notch fracture toughness Jρ,c is a measure of the fracture resistance which increases linearly with the notch radius due to the plastic work in the notch plastic zone. If this notch plastic zone does not invade totally the ligament, the notch fracture toughness Jρ,c is constant. This occurs when the notch radius is less than a critical one and there is no need to use the cracked specimen to measure a lower bound of the fracture resistance.

In this study, a buckling analysis is performed on rectangular composite plates with single and double circular notch using the finite element method. Laminated plates of carbon/bismaleimde (IM7/5250-4) are ordered symmetrically as follows [(θ/-θ)2]S. The buckling strength of symmetric laminated plates subjected to uniaxial compression is highlighted as a function of the fibers orientations. The results show that whatever the notch radius, the buckling load is almost stable. Increasing the degree of anisotropy significantly improves critical buckling load.
