The problem of crack path stability along the interface between two orthotropic elastically dissimilar materials under the presence of in-plane residual stresses is analyzed using the concept of Finite Fracture Mechanics and matched asymptotic procedure. An energy based fracture criterion is introduced for this problem and it is investigated whether and how is the criterion for the prediction of crack kinking from the interface affected by residual stresses. The complex stress intensity factor and the T-stress characterizing the stress state at the crack tip are calculated both for the thermal (residual stresses) and mechanical loading using the two-state integral. The matched asymptotic procedure together with FEM is used to derive the change of the potential energy induced by the crack growth by crack increment of finite length.

The problems of crack formation in orthotropic materials under 2i order polynomial function heat flow and 2j order polynomial function mechanical loading are considered. An extended local insulation crack model is proposed, and fracture analysis is carried out for the above problems. Utilizing Fourier transform technique (FTT) and principle of superposition, the jumps of temperature, elastic displacements on the crack, and so on are obtained. The advantage of this analysis is that the explicit closed form solutions of main parameters in classical fracture mechanics, i.e., the stress intensity factor, the energy release rate, and the energy density have been presented. A simple example is used to demonstrate the method proposed in this paper. The analysis results show that the non-dimensional thermal conductivity and the combined ratio of the heat flux per thickness perpendicular to the crack surface to the mechanical load have a great influence on the calculation of fracture parameters. Only when they meet certain conditions can the correct fracture parameter calculation results be obtained.

Abstract. An elastic structure subjected to thermal and mechanical loading with prescribed external boundary and varying internal interface is considered. The different thermal and mechanical nature of this interface is discussed, since the interface form and its properties affect strongly the structural response. The first-order sensitivities of an arbitrary thermal and mechanical behavioral functional with respect to shape and material properties of the interface are derived using the direct or adjoint approaches. Next the relevant optimality conditions are formulated. Some examples illustrate the applicability of proposed approach to control the structural response due to applied thermal and mechanical loads.
