The sustainable energy will play a key role in the future of the planet, not only because in 20 years Biomass is expected to deliver around 30% of total energy consumption, but also because BioEnergy, produced mainly through combustion and gasification of agro-industrial waste, woody materials and forest crops, is expected to be fundamental for sustainable energy production. Problems related to the emissions of greenhouse gases, lack of fossil natural resources and the increasing price of fuels have progressively encouraged research and adoption of new technological strategies for energy production from renewable sources and application of waste-to-energy (WTE) concepts. Syngas obtained from gasification of biomass and industrial wastes constitutes an interesting resource for energy generation because it has lower impacts for the environment compared to traditional technologies and allows for the valorisation of waste residues as feedstock. This work presents the scope, potential and technologies related to the use of biomass resources with a focus on thermal gasification of wastes.

In intensive care units (ICUs), clinicians must monitor patients’ vital signs and make decisions regarding the drugs they administer. The patients’ lives depend on the quality of these decisions but experts can make mistakes. Recent technological strategies and tools can decrease these errors. In this paper, the authors describe the development of a knowledge based system (KBS) to provide support to clinicians with respect to the drugs they administer to patients with cardiopathies in ICUs to stabilize them. To develop the system, knowledge from medical experts at the Meixoeiro Hospital in Vigo (Spain) has been extracted and formally represented as an ontology. As a result, a validated KBS has been obtained, which can be helpful to experts in ICUs and whose underlying knowledge can be easily shared and reused.

The wastewater from a petrochemical complex is characterized by a diversity of pollutants including hydrocarbons, in free and emulsified form, phenols including cresols and xylenols, mercaptans, sulfides, ammonia and cyanides. The wastewater treatment of the reported petrochemical complex is based on a multiple stage treatment approach, consisting of physico - chemical, and biological processes. The biological treatment process could be efficiently protected by preliminary wastewater flow regulation, controlling hydraulic and pollutants loads. Additional protection and improvement of the biological treatment was achieved by preliminary removal of more than 90 percent of the oil found in free and in emulsified form in the raw wastewater. Significant reliability and efficiency could be achieved by a combined biological treatment consisting of aerated ponds, lime clarification and a water cooling industrial system, recycling treated effluent as make-up.
