It is found that the low-temperature decomposition of martensite in quenched medium-carbon steel occurs in two stages. In the first stage, the rate of decomposition is higher than that in the subsequent stage. Application of the neutron diffraction method allows the identification of two stages of transformation in the first stage of martensite decomposition. It is shown that the first stage is associated predominantly with carbon segregation at dislocations, and the second, with the outdiffusion of carbon from the supersaturated solid solution with the formation of dispersed particles of metastable carbides. It is shown that the change in the concentration of carbon and, accordingly, the degree of tetragonal lattice of martensite at aging and low tempering occurs to a certain limit, independent of the cooling rate during quenching and tempering temperature. This is due to the establishment of a relative equilibrium between a supersaturated solid solution and fine particles of metastable iron carbide. It is found that the determining process, which leads to a change in the microhardness the low-temperature decomposition, is the out diffusion of carbon from the supersaturated solid solution.

Ni-B/Ni-B-B4C composite coatings on the substrate of medium-carbon steel (45#) were successfully fabricated by electroless plating in a low temperature bath. The corrosion resistance of Ni-B coating were examined by using electrochemical workstation. The results indicated that there are no pores and cracks and other defects at the interface between the substrate and composite coating. It was found that the corrosion resistance of Ni-B coating increased and then decreased with the addition of NaBH4 increasing, and the best addition in plating bath was about 0.9 g/L. While the corrosion resistance of Ni-B coating heat-treated at 400°C with NaBH4 addition 0.9 g/L was the worst.

Effects of shot-peening on Cr-Rare earth-boronizing at 650°C for 4 – 8h for medium carbon steel are investigated in this paper. The value difference in boron diffusion activation energy between shot-peening and undeformation is calculated. The layer depth, microhardness and brittleness are also analyzed. The results show that the activation energy has a decrease of 5647.78 J/mol after shot-peening for 1.5h, and the layer depth increases with prolonged shot-peening time. The layer can also retain its high hardness with low brittleness. The analysis indicates that shot-peening can provide a large number of crystal lattice defects that facilitates boron diffusion in the steel, and the low temperature is apt to remain high dislocation density.
