Abstract The structure, elemental and phase composition of the eutectic alloy Al86Ni2Со6Gd6 (hereinafter referred to as at.%) During the solidification of the melt from 1500oC at a rate of 1000oC/s under high pressure of 3 and 7 GPa have been investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy. Solidification of the melt under high pressure leads to a change in the phase composition of the alloy and the formation of an anomalously supersaturated solid solution of α-Al (Gd). At a pressure of 7 GPa, new phases were synthesized: Al3Gd * (like Al3U) containing Co and Ni, with a primitive cube structure (cP4/2) with a lattice parameter a = 4.285 ± 0.002 Angstrem and Al8Co4Gd * (like Al8Cr4Gd) with a tetragonal structure (tI26/1) with parameters a = 8.906 ± 0.003 Angstrem and c = 5.150 ± 0.003 Angstrem. The structure of all the samples obtained is homogeneous, dense, finely dispersed, without shrinkage cavities and pores. The average microhardness of the samples is high due to solid solution and precipitation hardening.

The study investigates the effect of casting speed on the solidification microstructure of the aluminum alloy Al0.3Mg1Si with and without the additions of zirconium and scandium. Casting was carried out in steel, copper, and water-cooled chill molds with a crystallization rate of 20 °C/s, 10 °C/s, and 30 °C/s, respectively. For each casting mode, the grain structure was investigated by optical microscopy and the intermetallic particles were investigated by scanning and transmission microscopy; in addition, measurements of the microhardness and the electrical conductivity were carried out. An increase in the solidification rate promotes grain refinement in both alloys. At the same time, the ingot cooling rate differently affects the number of intermetallic particles. In an alloy without scandium–zirconium additives, an increase in the ingot cooling rate leads to a decrease in the number of dispersoids due to an increase in the solubility of the alloying elements in a supersaturated solid solution. With the addition of scandium and zirconium, the amount of dispersoids increases slightly. This is because increasing the solubility of the alloying elements in a supersaturated solid solution is leveled by a growth of the number of grain boundaries, promoting the formation of particles of the (AlSi)3ScZr type, including those of the L12 type. In addition, the increase in the crystallization rate increases the number of primary nonequilibrium intermetallic particles which have a eutectic nature.

Solid solutions of Zn as an alloy element in Mg matrixes are expected to show improved corrosion resistance due to the electrode potential being positively shifted. In this study, a supersaturated solid solution of Mg-Zn alloy was achieved using mechanical alloying (MA) combined with laser sintering. In detail, supersaturated solid solution Mg-Zn powders were firstly prepared using MA, as it was able to break through the limit of phase diagram under the action of forced mechanical impact. Then, the alloyed Mg-Zn powders were shaped into parts using laser sintering, during which the limited liquid phase and short cooling time maintained the supersaturated solid solution. The Mg-Zn alloy derived from the as-milled powders for 30 h presented enhanced corrosion potential and consequently a reduced corrosion rate of 0.54 mm/year. Cell toxicity tests confirmed that the Mg-Zn solid solution possessed good cytocompatibility for potential clinical applications. This study offers a new strategy for fabricating Mg-Zn solid solutions using laser sintering with MA.

Abstract Al alloys often suffer from low mechanical strength and lack high-temperature microstructural and mechanical robustness. A series of binary and ternary nanocrystalline (NC) Al transition metal alloys with supersaturated solid solution and columnar nanograins have been recently developed by using magnetron sputtering, manifesting a new realm of mechanical properties and thermal stability. Distinct solutes cause evident differences in the phase transformations and efficiencies for grain refinement and crystalline-to-amorphous transition. Certain sputtered Al-TM alloys have shown room-temperature mechanical strengths greater than 2 GPa and outstanding thermal stability up to 400 °C. In addition, the NC Al alloys show mechanical anisotropy and tension–compression asymmetry, revealed by micromechanical tests. Through the process encapsulating various compositionally distinct systems, we attempt to illuminate the solute effects on grain refinement and properties and more importantly, tentatively unravel the design criteria for high-strength and yet thermally stable NC Al alloys. The peculiarities of the microstructure and properties of BrBNT1.7 beryllium bronze tape samples were studied: the samples were subjected to dispersion hardening as a result of quenching in a supersaturated solid solution and aging. Friction deformation in a dry friction mode provides additional effective hardening while maintaining increased plasticity (bending-and-unbending test).
