The relationship between increasing income of rural households and energy choice is explored. Previous studies have been equivocal because they ignored the consideration of out-migration, which is a distinctive characteristic of present China . This study provides additional insight by considering income structure and energy structure of rural households in western China. The research was conducted in Zhouzhi County in the jurisdiction of Xi’an city, Shaanxi Province, China. Through questionnaire survey, 1074 rural households’ detailed information about their livelihoods were obtained. After descriptive statistics analysis and econometrics model analysis, we provide evidence that migration income plays a important role when rural households choosing modern energy such as electricity or gas, which shows higher income housholds like to choose cleaner but expensive energy. We also find out-migration can reduce family firewood consumption, transforming the use of firewood to other cleaner forms of energy, which can keep the ecological environment sustainable development.

AbstractThe genetic variations in internal transcribed spacers (ITS) spanning ITS-1, 5.8S and ITS-2 rDNA ofDicrocoelium dendriticum, isolated from sheep and goats in four geographical regions in Shaanxi province, were examined. The lengths of ITS-1, 5.8S and ITS-2 rDNA sequences forD. dendriticumwere 749 bp, 161 bp and 234 bp, respectively. Intra-specific sequence variations ofD. dendriticumwere 0–0.5% for ITS-1 and 0–1.3% for ITS-2 rDNA, while the inter-specific variations among species in genusDicrocoeliumin ITS-2 rDNA were 3.4–12.3%. Phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of ITS-2 rDNA showed that allD. dendriticumisolates in the present study were grouped with referenceD. dendriticumisolates from sheep and goats, andD. dendriticumisolates from cattle and Japanese serow were clustered in a sister clade. However, the phylogenetic tree could not reveal geographically genetic relationships ofD. dendriticumisolates in different origins and hosts. These findings provided basic information for further study of molecular epidemiology and control ofD. dendriticuminfection in Shaanxi province as well as in the world.

AbstractIn September 2013, 2248 students from 36 junior high schools in Shaanxi Province underwent assessment of visual acuity (VA), completed a questionnaire about their spectacle use and were administered a standardized mathematics examination. Among 2,248 students (mean age 13.6 years, 52% male), visual impairment was present in 699 (31%, 95% Confidence Interval 29-33%). Spectacle wear was observed in 360 of 966 children needing glasses (37%). Ownership of spectacles among children needing glasses was associated with poorer uncorrected vision in the better-seeing eye (P <0.001) and paternal educational (p=0.001), but not age, sex, boarding at school, both parents having out-migrated for work or maternal education. Spectacle ownership among children with visual impairment was associated with better test performance (P=0.035). Therefore, visual impairment and non-wear of spectacle were common. Wearing spectacles was associated with better academic performance in this cross-sectional analysis, consistent with recent trial results among younger children.
