Two lamotriginium salts, namely lamotriginium crotonate [systematic name: 3,5-diamino-6-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazin-2-ium but-2-enoate, C9H8Cl2N5 +·C4H5O2 −, (III)] and lamotriginium salicylate [systematic name: 3,5-diamino-6-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazin-2-ium 2-hydroxybenzoate ethanol monosolvate, C9H8Cl2N5 +·C7H5O3 −·C2H5OH, (IV)] present extremely similar centrosymmetric hydrogen-bonded A...L...L...A packing building blocks (L is lamotriginium and A is the anion). The fact that salicylate salt (IV) is (ethanol) solvated, while crotonate salt (III) is not, has a profound effect on the way these elemental units aggregate to generate the final crystal structure. Possible reasons for this behaviour are analyzed and the hypothesis raised checked against similar structures in the literature.

Three crystal forms of the steroid 20-hydroxyecdysone were identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis: a solvent-free modification, a methanol solvate hydrate and a trihydrate. The structure of a closely related steroid, polypodine B (the 5,20-dihydroxy derivative of ecdysone), was determined in its monohydrate form. Since the unit-cell volume of unsolvated 20-hydroxyecdysone was found to be considerably smaller than that of ecdysone [Huber & Hoppe (1965). Chem. Ber. 98, 2403–2424], a new structure determination of ecdysone was performed, which confirmed the unexpected difference between the unit-cell volumes. The crystals of ecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysone are isostructural, while the mixed solvate of 20-hydroxyecdysone is homostructural with the hydrate of polypodine B. A detailed analysis of the hydrogen-bond networks in these closely related crystal pairs highlights their packing similarities, demonstrates the role of solvent molecules, and explains the unexpectedly small cell volume of 20-hydroxyecdysone.

ABSTRACTThe role of alloying elements such as Cr and Al in the formation and stability of the nitride phases formed due to N ion implantation into metallic iron was studied by conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS). The thermal stability of nitride phases upon 1 h annealing was greatly increased as a result of co-implanting either Cr or Al with N as compared to pure α-Fe implanted only with N.
