The crystal structure of [Fe(bpy)3] [CI3FeOFeCI3] (1) has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 295 K, and refined by least squares to a residual of 0.058 for 2002 'observed' reflections. Crystals are monoclinic, P21/c, a 9.616(3), b 26.264(6), c 13.821(7) Ǻ, β 99.68(2)°, Z4. In the cation, Fe-N distances range from 1.956(9) to 1 .989(10) Ǻ; in the anion, Fe-Cl distances range from 2.196(5) to 2.225(5) Ǻ. Fe-O distances are 1.763(11) and 1.740(11) Ǻ, and the Fe-O-Fe angle is 148.9(7)°. Recrystallization of 'compound A' from methanolic aqueous solution yields crystals with stoichiometry [{cis-Fe(phen)2Cl}2O]Cl2.nH2O( n ≈ 4.5) as established by structure determination (hampered by serious disorder); R is 0.09 for 749 'observed' reflections. Crystals are orthorhombic, Pcn2, a 18.05(1), b 13.83(1), c 10.481(6) Ǻ, Z 2. The Fe-N distances trans to each other are 2.12(3) and 2.13(3) Ǻ; Fe-N distances trans to Cl and O are 2.20(2) and 2.28(2) Ǻ, respectively. Fe-CI is 2.34(1) and Fe-O 1.787(6) A; Fe-O-Fe is 161(1)°. For crystals from aqueous solution, an isomorphous but larger unit cell is obtained [2754(7), cf. 2616(3) Ǻ3]; it is believed that this is a consequence of variable occupancy of the disordered solvent layers which lie parallel to bc between the ionic species.

A one-pot synthesis of sterically congested electron-poor N-vinyl pyrazoles in fairly good yields by the reaction of ethyl 3-phenyl-2-propynoate, pyrazoles and triphenylphosphine is reported. The structures of these compounds were confirmed by IR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray structure determination. The structural analysis of the products indicated that the reaction is completely regio- and stereoselective.

Abstract When Au(I) is provided with endocyclic soft thioether or endocyclic hard amine, endocyclic borderline imine and exocyclic hard amine coordination sites, the softer borderline endocyclic imine coordination site is favored. This is demonstrated by the synthesis and structural characterization (IR, MS, 1H, 13C and 31P NMR experiments and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis) of 2-aminoazole (2-amino-4-methylthiazole, 2-aminobenzothiazole and 2- aminobenzimidazole) complexes of [AuPPh3]+ (1-3). An unusual ring opening is observed for the reaction of 2-aminothiazoline with [Au(NO3)PPh3] yielding μ2-(2-mercapto-ethyl-cyanamide- k,S)bis(triphenylphosphine)gold(I) nitrate (4). Reactions of 2-aminoazoles with Au(C6F5)THT (THT=tetrahydrothiophene) yield [Au(C6F5)2]- stabilized by various cations. The formation of Au(2-aminothiazoline)C6F5 is again the exception

Single crystals of Ca11N6[CN2]2 (dark red needles, tetragonal, P42/mnm (no. 136), a = 1456.22(5), and c = 361.86(2) pm, Z = 2), Ca4N2[CN2] (transparent yellow needles, orthorhombic, Pnma (no. 62), a = 1146.51(11), b = 358.33(4), and c = 1385.77(13) pm, Z = 4) and Ca[CN2] (transparent, colorless, triangular plates, rhombohedral, R3̅m (no. 166), a = 369.00(3), and c = 1477.5(3) pm, Z = 3) were obtained by the reaction of Na2[CN2], CaCl2 and Ca3N2 (if demanded by stoichiometry) in arc-welded Ta ampoules at temperatures between 1200 - 1400 K. Their crystal structures were re-determined by means of single crystal X-ray structure analyses. Additionally, the Raman spectra were recorded on these same single crystals, whereas the IR spectra were obtained with the KBr pellet technique. The title compounds exhibit characteristic features for carbodiimide units with D∞h symmetry (d(C-N) = 121.7 - 123.8 pm and ∡ (N-C-N) = 180°). The vibrational frequencies of these units are in the expected range (Ca11N6[CN2]2: νs = 1230, νs = 2008; δ = 673/645/624 cm−1; Ca4N2[CN2]: νs = 1230, νs = 1986; δ = 672/647 cm−1; Ca[CN2]: νs = 1274, νs = 2031, δ = 668 cm−1). The structural results are more precise than the previously reported data, and with the newly attained Raman spectrum of Ca11N6[CN2]2 we correct data reported earlier.

Three new copper(II) complexes, [Cu(LH)2]Br2 (1), [Cu(LH)2]NCS2 (2), and [Cu(LH)2](NO3)2 (3), where LH is the zwitterionic form of 2-bromo-6-((2-(isopropylamino)ethylimino)methyl)phenol (HL), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The structures of the complexes were further confirmed by single crystal X-ray structure determination. All compounds are mononuclear copper(II) complexes. The Cu atoms in the complexes are coordinated by two imino N and two phenolate O atoms from two LH ligands, forming square planar coordination. The compounds were assayed for their antimicrobial activities.

Three new diterpenes have been isolated from soft corals of the genus Efflatounaria (Coelenterata, Octocorallia, Alcyonacea, Xeniidae). The structure of the first compound (4) was elucidated on the basis of high-field 1H n.m.r. spectroscopy while that of the second metabolite (5) was determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The third diterpene (6) was structurally related to (5), and its structure was confirmed by chemical transformation. All three diterpenes can be derived from xenicin-type precursors, by cleavage and recyclization.
