Abstract In Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and A chromobacter metalcaligenes δ-aminolevulinic acid synthase and δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase appear to be the rate limiting enzymes of porphyrin and hemebiosynthesis. Bypassing of these enzymes by addition of 6-aminolevulinic acid or porphobilinogen results in overproduction of tetrapyrroles.
