The aim of this work was to investigate the possible anatomical changes of Garcinia lucida and Scorodophloeus zenkeri after the removal of their bark. Debarking was done on individuals of each species at 1.30 m from the soil. The wound was rectangular in shape with 30 cm side. There was a follow-up every three months for nine months during which the survival and rate of regeneration of the bark were recorded. A block of cube was cut from the regenerated and intact wood of species for microtomy and microscopy activities. On the cross-section of each wood, vessel features like density and diameter were measured before and after wounding. Semi-automatic measurements were made using the SpectrumSee digital image analysis software. In the wood of the two species, it appeared that the density of the vessels before debarking was significantly comparable to the density after debarking, while the diameter of vessels in the regenerated wood was smaller. The cambial area increased slightly in the rainy season for all species. After nine months all the species started the restoration of their conductive zone. G. lucida heals its wound more rapidly than S. zenkeri.

Purpose. To characterize vitelliform lesions (VLs) in adult-onset foveomacular vitelliform dystrophy (AOFVD) and acquired vitelliform (AVL) patients using multimodal image analysis.Methods. Retrospective study of twenty-eight eyes from nineteen patients diagnosed with AVL or AOFVD. They were evaluated by color fundus photographs, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), fluorescein angiography (FA), and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).Results. Bilateral VLs were associated with AOFVD(p=0.013). Regular and centered VLs were associated with AOFVD (p=0.004andp=0.016), whereas irregular and noncentered lesions were more frequent in AVL patients. Visual acuity, greatest linear dimension (GLD), lesion height (LH), and pseudohypopyon were similar between groups. Whereas median LH and GLD in AVL group diminished significantly during follow-up (p=0.009andp=0.001), AOFVD lesions tended to become larger and thicker.Conclusions. When consulting a patient presenting a VL with unknown age of onset, familial history, or previous retinal diseases, some aspects of multimodal imaging assessment may lead the ophthalmologist to a correct diagnosis.

Photographic images of the Samseong-version (三省本: Korea’s Treasure No. 758-1) and the Gongin-version (空印本: Korea’s Treasure No. 758-2) of Nammyeongcheon Hwasangsong Jeungdoga (南明泉和尙頌證道歌: Nanmingquan Song Zhengdaoge) were compared and analyzed to investigate the differences between the two versions. According to a report in 2012 at the time of the designation of the Gongin-version as Korea’s treasure, both versions were printed from the same woodblocks. The Gongin-version is presumed to be a later print than the Samseong-version. The two versions are very similar in format and shape of border lines and characters. It is difficult to determine the differences with the naked eye, even for experts. In this study, based on the printing characteristics observed from each version through image analysis, useful evidence to determine whether it was printed using the same or different woodblocks and the order of printing was collected. As a result of careful image comparison and analysis, we concluded that the Samseong- and the Gongin-version were printed from different woodblocks, or possibly different typesetting. It was difficult to agree with the content of the report that the Gongin-version was a later print than the Samseong-version. In addition, it was noted that the Gongin-version print has characteristics quite different from the typical characteristics of woodblock printing seen in the Samseong-version. Additional investigations and follow-up studies on the printing technology used for Gongin-version print and the timing of printing are recommended.

A new image analysis-based instrument has been developed for measurement of low density and high density macrocontaminants from recycled pulp or whitewater. The unit is coupled to a pulp classifier that isolates the contaminants from pulp and concentrates them before their transfer to a specialized chamber that further separates the contaminants based on their relative density to water. The low density contaminants float on the water surface, whereas the high density macrocontaminants sink onto the settling plate, where images of both contaminant types are then captured and analysed. Through image analysis, the high density contaminants are further classified into two categories: contaminants that are whitish in color and mainly comprised of stickies are named heavy stickies, whereas contaminants that are blackish in color and comprised of black toners and dark wood components are named dirt. When operating in the online mode with autosamplers delivering the samples to the pulp classifier, the instrument provides macrocontaminant determinations every 15 min. The total count and surface area of both types of macrocontaminants per kilograms of pulp can then be sent by direct link to the mill data control system, allowing an effective follow-up of macrocontaminant changes in process pulps and waters. The unit also allows the user to view images of the contaminants. The analyzer results obtained in terms of number and area of macrocontaminants show a linear relationship with TAPPI T-277 om-07 “Macro stickies content in pulp: the ‘pick-up’ method.”
