The density of herbaceous crops creates a suitable environment to produce pathogens in the soil that intensify the attack of pathogens traditionally controlled by disinfectant, which are mostly prohibited and unlisted because of their toxicity. Grafting is an alternative technique to enhance abiotic stress tolerance and reduce root diseases due to soil-borne pathogens, thus enhancing crop production. This research study was conducted during the crop season of 2017 and 2018 in order to investigate the interactive effect of different grafting techniques of hybrid scion onto local rootstocks on plants survival, plant phenological growth, fruit yield and fruit quality under a controlled environment. The hybrid cucumber was also planted self-rooted. The cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cv. Kalaam F1, Syngenta was grafted onto four local cucurbitaceous rootstocks; ridge gourd (Luffa operculate Cogn.), bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.), pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.), bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standl.) using splice grafting, tongue approach, single cotyledon and hole insertion grafting techniques and self-rooted hybrid cucumber under greenhouse conditions. The experimental results indicated that all local cucurbitaceous rootstocks showed a high compatibility with hybrid cucumber scion in the splice grafting method compared to other grafting and non-grafted methods. Lagenaria siceraria rootstocks were found highly compatible with cucumber cv Kalaam scion which gave significantly maximum plant survival rates (95%) due to high sap contents, high SPAD value, better vegetative growth and maximum fruit yield when compared with other rootstocks by employing the splice grafting method followed by tongue approach, single cotyledon and hole insertion grafting while the fruit quality of all rootstocks was observed to be similar. The non-grafted cucumber cv. Kalaam F1 showed significant results of plant vegetative growth, fruit development and fruit quality and encountered grafting methods while the lowest result were associated with the hole insertion grafting method in all scion/rootstock combinations. The grafted plants have no significant effect on cucumber fruit dry matter and fruit quality while the fruit mineral compositions (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) were higher among grafted and non-grafted plant fruits. The results indicate that grafting hybrid cucumber onto four local cucurbitaceous rootstocks influenced growth, yield and fruit quality. Grafting can be alternative and control measure for soil-borne disease and to enhance cucumber production.

Bagging is widely practiced to produce high quality and unblemished fruit; however, little is currently known about the effect of bagging on flavor and nutritional quality of cucumber fruits. Here we determined the influence of bagging on fruit quality of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) using three genotypes from different geographic groups. Exocarp chlorophyll and carotenoid levels were significantly decreased by bagging, accompanied by color change. Ascorbate content in bagged fruits decreased to some extent, while contents of soluble sugars, starch, and cellulose were comparable with those of control fruits. Compositions related to fruit flavor quality could be enhanced largely through bagging treatment, with elevation of the relative proportion of C6 aldehyde, as well as (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal/(E)-2-nonenal ratio, and linoleic/α-linolenic acid ratio. Lipoxygenase and hydroperoxide lyase, two key enzymes in the production of volatiles, displayed distinctive transcript expression patterns and trends in changes of enzymatic activity in the bagged fruits of different genotypes. Overall, this study assesses the information on changing characteristics of fruit volatile composition and nutritional quality among different cucumber genotypes after bagging treatment. Results of this study would contribute to providing reference for mechanism study and cultivation conditions to improve cucumber fruit flavor to a considerable degree.

Abstract Background: OVATE family proteins (OFPs) are plant-specific proteins with the conserved OVATE domain that regulating plant growth and development. Although these OFPs have been studied in several species, the biological functions of this OFP gene family remain largely unknown in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). Results: In this study, we identified 19 CsOFPs in cucumber. This CsOFPs are distributed on seven chromosomes and can be divided into four subgroups. Most CsOFP genes are expressed in reproductive organs although have different expression patterns. Cis-elements analysis showed that there are six kinds of hormone response elements in CsOFPs and exogenous gibberellin treatment leads to a ‘first increase then decrease’ expression pattern of CsOFP7, CsOFP11 and CsOFP12. Ectopic expression of CsOFP11 in Arabidopsis resulted in shorter and blunt siliques. Conclusions: Together, these results indicated that CsOFPs may play important roles in cucumber fruit development.

Research on the application of growth regulators (ZPT) with the type of manure on cucumber fruit production (Cucumis sativus L.), carried out in the experimental garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, Tabanan University, Kediri Tabanan Bali, from February 2018 to April 2018. Using a Randomized Group Design (RACK). The treatment tried consisted of two factors, namely the type of manure and the type of growth agent. The dosing factor of the growth regulator consists of 3 types, namely: Ga = ZPT Atonik dose 0.5 ml l-1 water; Gg = ZPT Gibgro dose 100 mg 10 l-1 water; Gd = ZPT Dekamon dose 0.5 ml l-1 water. Type of manure consists of 3 types, namely: K0 = without manure; Ks = cow manure 4.8 kg polybag-1; Ka = chicken manure 4.8 kg polybag-1, each treatment was repeated three times.     The results show that, the interaction between the type of plant growth regulator and the type of manure had a significant effect on the variable total weight of plant fresh fruit-1, and the weight of fresh fruit-1 fruit. The highest total weight of plant-1 fruit was shown by the combination treatment of Atonik ZPT with chicken manure (KaGa) which is 546.67 g or increased by 50.46% compared to the combination of KaGg treatment which is equal to 363.33 g.      The treatment of the type of growth regulating agent has a very significant effect on the variable number of fruit plants-1, plant fruit length-1 and weight of fruit-1 fresh fruit. The treatment of ZPT Atonik gives the highest fruit-1 fresh fruit weight which is equal to 349.63 g of fruit or increased by 23.53% compared to the treatment of ZPT Gibgro which gives the lowest value of 263.81 g. The treatment of the single effect of manure has a significant effect on all observed results variables.

Abstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dosis kompos jerami dan pemangkasan terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil tanaman mentimun sehingga dapat menghasilkan pupuk yang ekonomis dan berproduksi tinggi untuk penanaman mentimun serta interaksi kedua faktor tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK)  pola faktorial 4 x 3 dengan 3 ulangan yang terdiri dari 2 faktor. Pengamatan yang diteliti yaitu panjang tanaman, umur berbunga, jumlah bunga betina, diameter buah, jumlah buah pertanaman, panjang buah, berat buah pertanaman, berat per buah dan potensi hasil. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dosis kompos jerami berpengaruh sangat nyata terhadap diameter buah dan berpengaruh nyata terhadap berat per buah mentimun. Dosis terbaik pada hasil tanaman mentimun dijumpai pada perlakuan dosis kompos jerami 30 dan 20 ton/ha. Pada faktor pemangkasan berpengaruh sangat nyata terhadap panjang tanaman 21 HSPT dan 28 HSPT serta berpengaruh nyata terhadap jumlah bunga betina, panjang buah, berat buah per tanaman, berat per buah dan potensi hasil. pemangkasan terbaik pada pertumbuhan dan hasil tanaman mentimun dijumpai pada perlakuan tanpa pemangkasan dan pemangkasan tunas pada ruas 6-10.Effect of Straw Compost Dosage And Pruning on Growth and Cucumber Plant Results (cucumis sativus L.)Abstract : This study aims to determine the dosage of straw compost and pruning to the growth and yield of cucumber plants so as to produce fertilizer that is economical and high production for cucumber planting as well as interaction of these two factors. This study used Randomized Block Design (RAK) 4 x 3 factorial pattern with 3 replications consisting of 2 factors. Observations observed were plant length, flowering age, number of female flowers, fruit diameter, number of fruit crops, fruit length, fruit crop weight, weight per fruit and yield potential. The results of this study indicate that the dosage of straw compost has a very significant effect on the fruit diameter and has a significant effect on the weight per cucumber fruit. The best doses on cucumber yields were found in the treatment of straw compost doses of 30 and 20 tons / ha. In the pruning factor very significant effect on the length of plants 21 HSPT and 28 HSPT and significantly affect the number of female flowers, fruit length, fruit weight per plant, weight per fruit and yield potential. the best pruning on growth and yield of cucumber crops was found in the treatment without pruning and pruning of shoots in the 6-10 segments.

Cucumber fruit (Cucumis sativus L.) of 13 cultivars were chilled at 2.5C for up to 10 d, Pitting scores after 8 d at 2.5C and 6 d at 20C ranged from 0.0 (none) in `HP 138' to 7.7 (severe) in `Poinsett 76' fruit. Ion leakage, as the increase in conductivity in a 0.3 M mannitol solution bathing excised disks of mesocarp tissue and expressed as % of the total ion content of the tissue, was lowest in `MDR I' (4.5%) and highest in `HP 159' (11%) after 6 d at 2.5C. After 10 d at 2.5C, however, the lowest was in `Navajo' (5.5%) and the highest in `Poinsett 76' (15%). Resistant lines, e.g., `Dasher II' and `HP 138' showed ion leakage of 7.6% and 5.4% after 6 d, and 8.4% and 7.5% after 10 d. Exudates from cut fruit were collected on filter paper. The fresh and dry wt of exudates from fruit held 8 d at 12.5C ranged from 144 to 346 mg and 16 to 47 mg, respectively. Conductivity of the exudates was highest in `PS 34885' (177 uSiemen/cm) and lowest in `Rawa' (83 uS/cm). The fresh wt of exudate from 6 lines ranged from 99 to 164 mg after 10 d at 2.5C followed by an additional 2.4 d at 20C. The % solid-of the exudates was higher in more resistant lines, e.g., `Dasher II' (8%) and `HP 138' (4%) than in more sensitive lines, e.g., `Poinsett 76' (2%) and `MDR I`(2%). Conductivity of the exudates from chilling sensitive lines were higher than from resistant lines, 60 vs. 30 uS/cm, respectively.

Cucumber yield in Nigeria is limited by low soil fertility. Therefore, field fertility and vine care experiments that have ability to moderate yield were conducted in the year 2015 cropping seasons. The experiment was located on farmer’s field at Abeokuta, Ogun State, Southwestern Nigeria to study the effects of NPK fertilizer and vine care on soil chemical properties, leaf nutrient content, growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). It was a 4 x 3 factorial experiment arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replicates. Four levels of NPK nutrient formulations (control, NPK15-15-15, NPK 20-10-10 and NPKMg 12-12-17-2) and three vine care types (unstaked, staked and trellised) were applied. Pre-experiment soil samples and soils from each plot at the end of the experiment were collected for soil chemical analysis. Leaf nutrient contents were determined. Plant growth and yield data were measured. Data collected were subjected to statistical analysis and the interaction between factors combined separated. NPK fertilizers significantly (P ≤ 0.05) increased soil N, P, K, Ca, Mg and leaf P, K, Ca and Mg concentrations, Cucumber fruit yield was increased by NPKMg 12-12-17-2 (90.5%), NPK 15-15-15 (60.4%) and NPK 20-10-10 (30.0%) compared with control. Application of vine care enhanced performance of cucumber, fruit yield was increased by trellised (34.0%) and staked (17.3%) compared with control. Combined application of NPKMg 12-12-17-2 and trellising was found most suitable for cucumber production.

This paper reports findings of an experiment carried out in a greenhouse to evaluate the growth and fruits quality of cucumber grown in plots irrigated with African catfish cultured wastewater compared with those irrigated with ordinary well water. Six circular African catfish culture tanks and six cucumber planter boxes were used for this experiment, three each for the fish cum cucumber integrated system and the control system of cucumber irrigated with ordinary well water. The results of the research indicated that fish cultured wastewater had a better influence on the plant height, the number, length, and diameterof leaves, as well as the diameter and length of the fruits. Six experts, each independently assessed fruits from the two treatments for juiciness, sweetness, taste and crispiness. The fruits were assessed by experts who though were aware of the purpose of the evaluation, did not know the identity of fruits they were assessing. The fish effluent fertigated cucumber fruits had a higher mean score in juiciness, sweetness, taste and crispiness. Wastewater from the African catfish production system thus exhibits the potential for reuse in the production of cucumber plants as it had no negative effect on the organoleptic quality of cucumber fruit produced.
