Abstract This article articulates conceptual and methodological strategies for studying the dynamic structure of dyadic interaction revealed by the turn-to-turn exchange of messages between partners. Using dyadic time series data that capture partners’ back-and-forth contributions to conversations, dynamic dyadic systems analysis illuminates how individuals act and react to each other as they jointly construct conversations. Five layers of inquiry are offered, each of which yields theoretically relevant information: (a) identifying the individual moves and dyadic spaces that set the stage for dyadic interaction; (b) summarizing conversational units and sequences; (c) examining between-dyad differences in overall conversational structure; (d) describing the temporal evolution of conversational units and sequences; and (e) mapping within-dyad dynamics of conversations and between-dyad differences in those dynamics. Each layer of analysis is illustrated using examples from research on supportive conversations, and the application of dynamic dyadic systems analysis to a range of interpersonal communication phenomena is discussed.

The significance matrix for the parameters of “material-billet-equipment-process-tool-personnel-environment” system was compiled using the systems approach to the assurance of forging dimensional accuracy, and the expert analysis revealed the most significant process parameters that affect the accuracy. The application of simulation modeling helped to establish the dependence of forging force on the dimensions of an incoming billet. The paper suggests a solution to increase the accuracy of the sized forgings.

Systems analysis would be a useful tool for certain kinds of pesticide research, particularly that involving decisions affecting the environment or the ecosystem. A well-designed systems analysis would permit researchers and policymakers to learn more about the complete effects of their decisions relating to pesticides. It is doubtful whether any one person or group of persons can mentally formulate all the complex effects of a pesticide on the environment, on optimum farm organization and practices, on human welfare, and on the myriad of other interrelated factors.

AbstractA susceptible–exposed–infectious theoretical model describing Tasmanian devil population and disease dynamics is presented and mathematically analysed using a dynamical systems approach to determine its behaviour under a range of scenarios. The steady states of the system are calculated and their stability analysed. Closed forms for the bifurcation points between these steady states are found using the rate of removal of infected individuals as a bifurcation parameter. A small-amplitude Hopf region, in which the populations oscillate in time, is shown to be present and subjected to numerical analysis. The model is then studied in detail in relation to an unfolding parameter which describes the disease latent period. The model’s behaviour is found to be biologically reasonable for Tasmanian devils and potentially applicable to other species.

This article points out some reasons for marketing's lag in the use of computers and quantitative techniques. The systems approach is suggested as one which can minimize or eliminate the causes of this lag. The systems approach outlined by the author uses marketing theory to guide the firm's efforts in establishing performance criteria, organizing an information collection activity, and developing analytic models.

The results of the research on the application of a systematic approach to solving energy efficiency problems in Ukraine are presented. The reasons for restraining the level of energy efficiency are highlighted, among which are the hollowing: ineffective policy of incentives to reduce energy consumption; lack of investments and conditions for their attraction; inefficient tariff and price policy in the energy sector of the economy, non-compliance with regulations, programs of various levels and measures. The need to increase the level of energy efficiency in Ukraine is substantiated and a system analysis is proposed to solve this problem. The methodology of systems analysis is implemented using a systems approach, in particular, to the interpretation of the process of energy efficiency development as an open, nonlinear, complex system. As an element of systems analysis, the study uses a multilevel approach, which provides an opportunity to consider the object of study at different hierarchical levels: the international community, state, industry, region and individual. It is noted that in order to successfully develop the progress of energy efficiency in Ukraine, it is necessary to take into account global trends and recent large-scale changes in this area. Examples of progress realization at the state level are given, in particular, implementation of a large number of legal acts, a number of stimulating measures for energy saving, etc. The importance of the sectoral level to increase energy efficiency in Ukraine is indicated. The importance of energy efficiency potential at the regional level is emphasized, which can give a significant boost to its entire economy and significantly improve the lives of the population. The importance of optimizing the process of energy efficiency at the level of various institutions is presented; as one of the options for solving this problem, it is proposed to popularize its benefits both among the population and the individual. The multilevel approach to energy efficiency in Ukraine proposed in the study presupposes an integrated combination of efforts at different levels and a synergistic effect of solving the problem. In this study, a multi-stage systems approach has been discussed for implementation to planning of airport parking facilities. Six objectives were selected for comparing alternatives. Two sets of questionnaires were distributed to identify the relative importance of the objectives and the degree to which they are satisfied by the alternatives from the point of view of users and planners. A computer program, based on dynamic programming technique, was used in evaluating the alternatives and searching for the ones that are most effective in satisfying the objectives.The technique was tested, using actual data for the proposed parking facility of the new Air Terminal Complex, Calgary International Airport. The results show the applicability of the method and its usefulness as a planning tool. The actual alternative implemented at Calgary Airport, independent of this study, ranked second according to this analysis.

The paper describes relevance of the issue of ensuring reliable operation of vehicles for providing the required level of economic efficiency and safety of transportations via transport systems. Systems analysis method is used for solving the scientific problem. The place of vehicles is defined in the general classification of technical systems on the basis of systems analysis. The study proposes to divide the criteria of operational efficiency in accordance with the groups of properties of technical objects and shows their interrelation. As a result of the study, the generalized structure of integrated complexes of on-board equipment (ICOE) of vehicles is formed. Analysis of ICOE properties and their effect on the complex reliability is performed from the standpoint of systems approach is performed. Theoretical substantiation is provided for the necessity and the possibility of implementing the principles of survivability and fault tolerance of ICOE to ensure their effective use. The application of mutual control structures for the organization of on-board computer system diagnostics as a central part of ICOE is substantiated.
