Abstract During March 27–July 14, 2020, the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network extended its surveillance to hospital capacities responding to COVID-19 pandemic. The data showed wide variations across hospitals in case burden, bed occupancies, ventilator usage, and healthcare personnel and supply status. These data were used to inform emergency responses.

Abstract Using data from the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), we assessed changes to intensive care unit (ICU) bed capacity during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Changes in capacity varied by hospital type and size. ICU beds increased by 36%, highlighting the pressure placed on hospitals during the pandemic.

Abstract Background Due to the high incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at the Detroit Medical Center, vancomycin is now routinely part of the prophylaxis regimen for cardiothoracic (CT) surgery. The study aims to compare the rate and types of surgical site infections (SSIs) when vancomycin is added to cefazolin for CT surgery compared to cefazolin alone. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study conducted at two university-affiliated hospitals. Patients who underwent CT surgery between January 2008 and August 2017 and had a readmission for SSI within 90 days of procedure were included. Patients who received cefazolin were compared to patients who received both cefazolin and vancomycin for CT surgery prophylaxis. The primary outcome was incidence of SSIs within 90 days of surgery as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and National Healthcare Safety Network. Results Out of 828 patients who underwent CT surgeries, there were 32 patients readmitted within 90 days for SSI. SSI occurred in 4.7% of patients who received cefazolin monotherapy, and 2.4% of patients who received both cefazolin and vancomycin (p=0.095). There was no discernible difference in types of SSI between groups. Pathogens were isolated in 78% of SSIs, with 75% Gram-positive and 19% Gram-negative organisms. SSIs resulted in an average 9.8 days in the hospital and 28.9 days of antibiotic therapy, and led to a total of 15 additional procedures. Conclusion Vancomycin added to cefazolin for prophylaxis in CT surgery resulted in lower incidence of SSI, however the difference was not statistically significant. Os objetivos desse estudo foram investigar a participação de Candida albicans e não-albicans como agente de colonização e sepse, bem como os fatores de risco associados aos neonatos internados na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal do Hospital de Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia. Foi realizada vigilância epidemiológica pelo sistema National Healthcare Safety Network no período entre agosto de 2007 e abril de 2008. A taxa de incidência de sepse com critério microbiológico foi de 6,7/1.000 paciente/dia, constatando-se apenas um caso de candidemia. Aproximadamente, 19% dos neonatos estavam colonizados por Candida, identificadas como Candida albicans (50%) e Candida não-albicans (50%). Os fatores de risco significantes para colonização por Candida spp foram a idade gestacional entre 26 e 30 semanas, o uso prévio de antibiótico e o cateter vascular central umbilical. A mortalidade total foi de 11,8% nos neonatos internados durante o período de estudo com sepse, porém o recém-nascido com candidemia não evoluiu para óbito.
