SummaryThe usefulness of a probe which can sense the absolute value of the stagnation pressure in supersonic flow has long been recognised. In the past such a probe has not been available and therefore it has been necessary to infer this fundamentally important flow property from measurements of other properties. This paper describes a probe which has been developed specifically to measure accurately the stagnation pressure of a supersonic gas stream. Measurements of the performance of the probe to date show that it is capable of measuring absolute stagnation pressure with an accuracy of 0.1 per cent in the Mach number range 1.5 to 2.1. No measurements have yet been made in the transonic range, but at low subsonic speeds the probe has demonstrated its ability to measure dynamic pressure within an accuracy of 0.1 per cent at a Mach number of approximately 0.13. The permissible range of misalignment in pitch and yaw before the pressure recovery begins to deteriorate are functions of free-stream Mach number and are usefully wide.

Purpose This study aims to investigate effects of sonic jet injection into supersonic cross-flow (JISC) numerically in different dynamic pressure ratio values and free stream Mach numbers. Design/methodology/approach Large Eddy simulation (LES) with dynamic Smagorinsky model is used as the turbulence approach. The numerical results are compared with the experimental data, and the comparison shows acceptable validation. Findings According to the results, the dynamic pressure ratio has critical effects on the zone related to barrel shock. Despite free stream Mach number, increasing dynamic pressure ratio leads to expansion of barrel shock zone. Consequently, expanded barrel shock zone would bring about more obstruction effect. In addition, the height of counter-rotating vortex pair increases, and the high-pressure area before jet and low-pressure area after jet will rise. The results show that the position of barrel shock is deviated by increasing free stream Mach number, and the Bow shock zone becomes stronger and close to barrel shock. Moreover, high pressure zone, which is located before the jet, decreases by high free stream Mach number. Practical implications In this study, LES with a dynamic Smagorinsky model is used as the turbulence approach. Effects of sonic JISC are investigated numerically in different dynamic pressure ratio values and free stream Mach numbers. Originality/value As summary, the following are the contribution of this paper in the field of JISC subjects: several case studies of jet condition have been performed. In all the cases, the flow at the nozzle exit is sonic, and the free stream static pressure is constant. To generate proper grid, a cut cell method is used for domain modelling. Boundary condition effect on the wall pressure distribution around the jet and velocity profiles, especially S shape profiles, is investigated. The results show that the relation between representing the location of Mach disk centre and at transonic regime is a function of second-order polynomial, whereas at supersonic regime, the relationship is modelled as a first-order polynomial. In addition, the numerical results are compared with the experimental data demonstrating acceptable validation.

In this paper, we perform direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent boundary layers with nominal free-stream Mach number ranging from 0.3 to 12. The main objective is to assess the scalings with respect to the mean and turbulence behaviours as well as the possible breakdown of the weak compressibility hypothesis for turbulent boundary layers at high Mach numbers (M > 5). We find that many of the scaling relations, such as the van Driest transformation for mean velocity, Walz's relation, Morkovin's scaling and the strong Reynolds analogy, which are derived based on the weak compressibility hypothesis, remain valid for the range of free-stream Mach numbers considered. The explicit dilatation terms such as pressure dilatation and dilatational dissipation remain small for the present Mach number range, and the pressure–strain correlation and the anisotropy of the Reynolds stress tensor are insensitive to the free-stream Mach number. The possible effects of intrinsic compressibility are reflected by the increase in the fluctuations of thermodynamic quantities (p′rms/pw, ρ′rms/ρ, T′rms/T) and turbulence Mach numbers (Mt, M′rms), the existence of shocklets, the modification of turbulence structures (near-wall streaks and large-scale motions) and the variation in the onset of intermittency.

A simple technique has been developed which samples the dynamic image plane information of a schlieren system using a digital correlator. Measurements have been made in the passages and in the wakes of transonic turbine blades in a linear cascade. The wind tunnel runs continuously and has independently variable Reynolds and Mach number. As expected, strongly correlated vortices were found in the wake and trailing edge region at 50 KHz. Although these are strongly coherent we show that there is only limited cross-correlation from wake to wake over a Mach no. range M = 0.5 to 1.25 and variation of Reynolds number from 3 × 105 to 106. The trailing edge fluctuation cross correlations were extended both upstream and downstream and preliminary measurements indicate that this technique can be used to obtain information on wake velocity. The vortex frequency has also been measured over the same Mach number range for two different cascades. The results have been compared with high speed schlieren photographs.

Windmilling requirements for aircraft engines often define propulsion and airframe design parameters. The present study is focused is on two key quantities of interest during windmill operation: fan rotational speed and stage losses. A model for the rotor exit flow is developed, that serves to bring out a similarity parameter for the fan rotational speed. Furthermore, the model shows that the spanwise flow profiles are independent of the throughflow, being determined solely by the configuration geometry. Interrogation of previous numerical simulations verifies the self-similar nature of the flow. The analysis also demonstrates that the vane inlet dynamic pressure is the appropriate scale for the stagnation pressure loss across the rotor and splitter. Examination of the simulation results for the stator reveals that the flow blockage resulting from the severely negative incidence that occurs at windmill remains constant across a wide range of mass flow rates. For a given throughflow rate, the velocity scale is then shown to be that associated with the unblocked vane exit area, leading naturally to the definition of a dynamic pressure scale for the stator stagnation pressure loss. The proposed scaling procedures for the component losses are applied to the flow configuration of Prasad and Lord (2010). Comparison of simulation results for the rotor-splitter and stator losses determined using these procedures indicates very good agreement. Analogous to the loss scaling, a procedure based on the fan speed similarity parameter is developed to determine the windmill rotational speed and is also found to be in good agreement with engine data. Thus, despite their simplicity, the methods developed here possess sufficient fidelity to be employed in design prediction models for aircraft propulsion systems.

In this study, direct numerical simulation of the flow around a rotating sphere at high Mach and low Reynolds numbers is conducted to investigate the effects of rotation rate and Mach number upon aerodynamic force coefficients and wake structures. The simulation is carried out by solving the three-dimensional compressible Navier–Stokes equations. A free-stream Reynolds number (based on the free-stream velocity, density and viscosity coefficient and the diameter of the sphere) is set to be between 100 and 300, the free-stream Mach number is set to be between 0.2 and 2.0, and the dimensionless rotation rate defined by the ratio of the free-stream and surface velocities above the equator is set between 0.0 and 1.0. Thus, we have clarified the following points: (1) as free-stream Mach number increased, the increment of the lift coefficient due to rotation was reduced; (2) under subsonic conditions, the drag coefficient increased with increase of the rotation rate, whereas under supersonic conditions, the increment of the drag coefficient was reduced with increasing Mach number; and (3) the mode of the wake structure becomes low-Reynolds-number-like as the Mach number is increased.
