The three-dimensional problem of blunt-body impact onto the free surface of an ideal incompressible liquid is considered within the Wagner theory. The theory is formally valid during an initial stage of the impact. The problem has been extensively studied in both two-dimensional and axisymmetric cases. However, there are no exact truly three-dimensional solutions of the problem even within the Wagner theory. At present, three-dimensional effects in impact problems are mainly handled approximately by using a sequence of two-dimensional solutions and/or aspect-ratio correction factor. In this paper we present exact analytical rather than approximate solutions to the three-dimensional Wagner problem. The solutions are obtained by the inverse method. In this method the body velocity and the projection on the horizontal plane of the contact line between the liquid free surface and the surface of the entering body are assumed to be given at any time instant. The shape of the impacting body is determined from the Wagner condition. It is proved that an elliptic paraboloid entering calm water at a constant velocity has an elliptic contact line with the free surface. Most of the results are presented for elliptic contact lines, for which analytical solutions of the inverse Wagner problem are available. The results obtained can be helpful in testing other numerical approaches and studying the influence of three-dimensional effects on the liquid flow and the hydrodynamic loads.

Large-amplitude, time-domain, wave-body interactions are studied in this paper for problems with forward speed. Both two-dimensional strip theory and three-dimensional computation methods are shown and compared by a number of numerical simulations. In the present approach, an exact body boundary condition and linearized free surface boundary conditions are used. By distributing desingularized sources above the calm water surface and using constant-strength flat panels on the exact body surface, the boundary integral equations are solved numerically at each time step. The strip theory method implements Radial Basis Functions to approximate the longitudinal derivatives of the velocity potential on the body. Once the fluid velocities on the free surface are computed, the free surface elevation and potential are updated by integrating the free surface boundary conditions. After each time step, the body surface and free surface are regrided due to the instantaneous changing wetted body geometry. Extensive results are presented to validate the efficiency of the present methods. These results include the added mass and damping computations for a Wigley III hull and an S-175 hull with forward speed using both two-dimensional and three-dimensional approaches. Exciting forces acting on a Wigley III hull due to regular head seas are obtained and compared using both the fully three-dimensional method and the two-dimensional strip theory. All the computational results are compared with experiments or other numerical solutions.

The flow-induced vibrations of an elastically mounted circular cylinder, free to oscillate in an arbitrary direction and forced to rotate about its axis, are examined via two- and three-dimensional simulations, at a Reynolds number equal to 100, based on the body diameter and inflow velocity. The behaviour of the flow–structure system is investigated over the entire range of vibration directions, defined by the angle $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$ between the direction of the current and the direction of motion, a wide range of values of the reduced velocity $U^{\star }$ (inverse of the oscillator natural frequency) and three values of the rotation rate (ratio between the cylinder surface and inflow velocities), $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in \{0,1,3\}$, in order to cover the reference non-rotating cylinder case, as well as typical slow and fast rotation cases. The oscillations of the non-rotating cylinder ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=0$) develop under wake-body synchronization or lock-in, and their amplitude exhibits a bell-shaped evolution, typical of vortex-induced vibrations (VIV), as a function of $U^{\star }$. When $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$ is increased from $0^{\circ }$ to $90^{\circ }$ (or decreased from $180^{\circ }$ to $90^{\circ }$), the bell-shaped curve tends to monotonically increase in width and magnitude. For all angles, the flow past the non-rotating body is two-dimensional with formation of two counter-rotating spanwise vortices per cycle. The behaviour of the system remains globally the same for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=1$. The principal effects of the slow rotation are a slight amplification of the VIV-like responses and widening of the vibration windows, as well as a limited asymmetry of the responses and forces about the symmetrical configuration $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}=90^{\circ }$. The impact of the fast rotation ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=3$) is more pronounced: VIV-like responses persist over a range of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$ but, outside this range, the system is found to undergo a transition towards galloping-like oscillations characterised by amplitudes growing unboundedly with $U^{\star }$. A quasi-steady modelling of fluid forcing predicts the emergence of galloping-like responses as $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$ is varied, which suggests that they could be mainly driven by the mean flow. It, however, appears that flow unsteadiness and body motion remain synchronised in this vibration regime where a variety of multi-vortex wake patterns are uncovered. The interaction with flow dynamics results in deviations from the quasi-steady prediction. The successive steps in the evolution of the vibration amplitude versus $U^{\star }$, linked to wake pattern switch, are not captured by the quasi-steady approach. The flow past the rapidly-rotating, vibrating cylinder becomes three-dimensional over an interval of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$ including the in-line oscillation configuration, with only a minor effect on the system behaviour.

AbstractUnderstanding the behaviour of particles entrained in a fluid flow upon changes in flow direction is crucial in problems where particle inertia is important, such as the erosion process in pipe bends. We present results on the impact of particles in a T-shaped channel in the laminar–turbulent transitional regime. The impacting event for a given system is described in terms of the Reynolds number and the particle Stokes number. Experimental results for the impact are compared with the trajectories predicted by theoretical particle-tracing models for a range of configurations to determine the role of the viscous boundary layer in retarding the particles and reducing the rate of collision with the substrate. In particular, a two-dimensional model based on a stagnation-point flow is used together with three-dimensional numerical simulations. We show how the simple two-dimensional model provides a tractable way of understanding the general collision behaviour, while more advanced three-dimensional simulations can be helpful in understanding the details of the flow.

Two- and three-dimensional simulations of the flow around straked cylinders are presented. For the two-dimensional simulations we used the Spectral/hp Element Method, and carried out simulations for five different angles of rotation of the cylinder with respect to the free stream. Fixed and elastically-mounted cylinders were tested, and the Reynolds number was kept constant and equal to 150. The results were compared to those obtained from the simulation of the flow around a bare cylinder under the same conditions. We observed that the two-dimensional strakes are not effective in suppressing the vibration of the cylinders, but also noticed that the responses were completely different even with a slight change in the angle of rotation of the body. The three-dimensional results showed that there are two mechanisms of suppression: the main one is the decrease in the vortex shedding correlation along the span, whilst a secondary one is the vortex wake formation farther downstream.

Abstract Three-dimensional effects on slamming loads predictions of a ship section are investigated numerically using the unsteady incompressible Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and volume of fluid (VOF) method, which are implemented in interDyMFoam solver in open-source library OpenFoam. A convergence and uncertainty study is performed considering different resolutions and constant Courant number (CFL) following the ITTC guidelines. The numerical solutions are validated through comparisons of slamming loads and motions between the CFD simulations and the available experimental values. The total slamming force and slamming pressures on a 2D ship section and the 3D model are compared and discussed. Three-dimensional effects on the sectional force and the pressures are quantified both in transverse and longitudinal directions of the body considering various entry velocities. The non-dimensional pressure coefficient distribution on the 3D model is presented.

The accurate prediction of ground effect aerodynamics is an important aspect of wing-in-ground (WIG) effect vehicle design. When WIG vehicles operate over water, the deformation of the nonrigid surface beneath the body may affect the aerodynamic performance of the craft. The likely surface deformation has been considered from a theoretical and numerical position. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases have been considered, and results show that any deformation occurring on the water surface is likely to be caused by the wing tip vortices rather than an increased pressure distribution beneath the wing.

Some nonlinear aspects of the two-dimensional problem of a submerged body moving with constant speed in otherwise undisturbed water of uniform depth are considered. It is shown that a theory of Benjamin which predicts a uniform rise of the free surface ahead of the body and the lowering of the mean level of the waves behind it agrees well with experimental data. The local steady-flow problem is solved by a numerical method which satisfies the exact free-surface conditions. Third-order perturbation formulas for the downstream free waves are also presented. It is found that in sufficiently shallow water, the wavelength increases with increasing disturbance strength for fixed values of the free-stream-Froude number. This is opposite to the deepwater case where the wavelength decreases with increasing disturbance strength.

It has been a challenge to simulate flexible flapping wings or other three-dimensional problems involving strong fluid–structure interactions. Solving a unified fluid–solid system in a monolithic manner improves both numerical stability and efficiency. The current algorithm considered a three-dimensional extension of an earlier work which formulated two-dimensional fluid–structure interaction monolithically under a unified framework for both fluids and solids. As the approach is extended from a two-dimensional to a three-dimensional configuration, a cell division technique and the associated projection process become necessary and are illustrated here. Two benchmark cases, a floppy viscoelastic particle in shear flow and a flow passing a rigid sphere, are simulated for validation. Finally, the three-dimensional monolithic algorithm is applied to study a micro-air vehicle with flexible flapping wings in a forward flight at different angles of attack. The simulation shows the impact from the angle of attack on wing deformation, wake vortex structures, and the overall aerodynamic performance.

The induced polarization (IP) and electromagnetic (EM) responses of a three‐dimensional body in the earth can be calculated using an integral equation solution. The problem is formulated by replacing the body by a volume of polarization or scattering current. The integral equation is reduced to a matrix equation, which is solved numerically for the electric field in the body. Then the electric and magnetic fields outside the inhomogeneity can be found by integrating the appropriate dyadic Green’s functions over the scattering current. Because half‐space Green’s functions are used, it is only necessary to solve for scattering currents in the body—not throughout the earth. Numerical results for a number of practical cases show, for example, that for moderate conductivity contrasts the dipole‐dipole IP response of a body five units in strike length approximates that of a two‐dimensional body. Moving an IP line off the center of a body produces an effect similar to that of increasing the depth. IP response varies significantly with conductivity contrast; the peak response occurs at higher contrasts for two‐dimensional bodies than for bodies of limited length. Very conductive bodies can produce negative IP response due to EM induction. An electrically polarizable body produces a small magnetic field, so that it is possible to measure IP with a sensitive magnetometer. Calculations show that horizontal loop EM response is enhanced when the background resistivity in the earth is reduced, thus confirming scale model results.
