AbstractWarthin's tumour arising from minor salivary glands of the nasopharynx is described in a patient with eosinophilic rhinitis and nasal polyposis. The microscopical features of this lesion were indistinguishable from those of Warthin's tumours of the parotid gland. The present case supports the histogenetic theory that the epithelial component of extraparotid Warthin's tumours represents reactive oncocytic metaplasia and hyperplasia induced by chronic inflammation rather than genuine neoplasia. It is suggested that the term Warthin's tumour is preferable to designations indicating neoplasia of these extraparotid lesions which are indistinguishable histologically and ultrastructurally from parotid and juxtaparotid adenolymphomas.

AbstractThe major salivary glands are considered to rarely be the sites of primary terminal duct adenocarcinomas, a neoplasm with a considerable predilection for origin from intraoral minor salivary glands. We present a clinicopathological study of 22 terminal duct adenocarcinomas of the parotid gland, the largest single series to date. A comparison between the parotid neoplasms and over 200 minor salivary gland terminal duct adenocarcinomas indicates there is little difference in biological behaviour and confirms the low-grade quality of the carcinomas, regardless of site of origin.

AbstractA rare variant of the cystadenoma of salivary gland origin is presented, which occurred in the parotid of a 36-year-old, otherwise healthy female patient. The tumour showed a dense follicle-containing lymphoid stroma, resembling papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum (Warthin's tumour). In contrast to that, the epithelial lining gave a more irregular impression and oncocytic metaplasia were completely absent. Light microscopic and immunohistochemical features of the tumour are described and compared with those of classical cystadenoma and papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum (Warthin's tumour). Other relevant multicystic epithelial parotid lesions, which are commonly associated with a prominent lymphoid component are discussed.

Objectives: To determine whether cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is overexpressed in Warthin's tumours, and to characterize its pattern of expression.Methods: Twenty-one paraffin-embedded Warthin's tumour specimens were analysed by immunohistochemical staining for expression of human COX-2. Semi-quantitative analysis of the staining was performed.Results: In all of the specimens, we found that there was overexpression of COX-2 within the epithelial component of the tumours, with no expression in the lymphoid components. There was also overexpression of COX-2 in the salivary duct system of normal parotid tissue.Conclusions: Our results suggest that COX-2 is up-regulated in the epithelial component of Warthin's tumours. Our findings support the hypothesis that Warthin's tumours originate from heterotopic ductal epithelial cells of the parotid gland. The role of COX-2 expression in the pathogenesis of Warthin's tumours remains to be determined.

Non-neoplastic cysts of the salivary glands are uncommon and represent 2-5% of all salivary gland lesions. They are mainly mucoceles or salivary duct cysts. Unlike a mucocele, which is surrounded by granulation tissue, the salivary duct cyst is lined by epithelium. Salivary duct cysts are more common in the oral minor salivary glands and rarely occur in the major salivary glands, show a marked predilection for the superficial lobe of the parotid, and represent 10% of all salivary gland cysts. Neoplastic differentiation of the lining of the salivary duct cyst has been reported. We report a case of a salivary duct cyst of the left parotid gland, with a review of radiographic and histopathologic features.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland tumor but is extremely rare in pediatric patients. The parotid gland is the most affected salivary gland, and the minor salivary glands are rarely affected. Here, we report a case of a 12-year-old boy with a pleomorphic adenoma of the palate.

The epidemiology of salivary gland tumors worldwide is not very well defined. Although many studies on this subject have been undertaken, the data are generally focused on specific topics such as parotid gland neoplasms or tumors of the major salivary glands. We conducted a study to establish the prevalence and distribution of benign and malignant neoplasms of both the major and minor salivary glands at a single institution. We reviewed 244,204 cases that had come through our pathology department from January 1994 through December 2005 and found 235 cases of a salivary gland neoplasm (0.09%). The female-to-male ratio was 1.04:1, and the mean age of the patients was 47 years. Of the 235 neoplasms, 159 (67.66%) were located in the parotid gland, 34 (14.47%) in the submandibular gland, and 42 (17.87%) in the minor salivary glands. A total of 146 tumors (62.13%) were benign and 89 (37.87%) were malignant. Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common neoplasm, occurring in 98 cases (41.70%). The most common malignancy was mucoepidermoid carcinoma, with 27 cases (11.49%). Our data demonstrate that the characteristics of salivary gland tumors in a Turkish population at a single institution are similar to those reported in the literature worldwide.

AbstractA case is presented of a rare intraductal papilloma being found simultaneously with a parotid duct cyst, which is a relatively common parotid disorder. The papilloma most probably played a significant role in the obstruction of the duct and thus caused the ductal cyst. Intraductal papillomas have been mostly described in minor salivary glands, but are rare in the parotid gland.

AbstractLipomatosis has not previously been reported in minor salivary glands. Its occurrence in the parotid gland is well recognized. We present the first reported case of lipomatosis of the minor salivary glands in the nasal cavity. We also review the tumours of the minor salivary glands, lipomas and lipomatosis of the parotid, and the few reported cases of lipomas of the sinonasal tract.

ABSTRACT Pleomorphic adenoma is a common, benign tumor arising from the major salivary glands, most commonly from the parotid gland. In addition, they may also occur in the minor salivary glands of the hard and soft palate. Intranasal pleomorphic adenomas are unusual and may be misdiagnosed because they have greater myoepithelial cellularity and fewer myxoid stromata compared to those elsewhere. We report a case of pleomorphic adenoma of the nasal cavity arising from the nasal septum.
