A new polyclad species associated withBankia martensi(Bivalvia) from the South Pacific coast of Chile, and its taxonomic position within Euplanidae (Platyhelminthes, Ilyplanoidea)

We describe a new genus anda newspecies of Polycladida,Namyhplana henriettae(Platyhelminthes, Euplanidae), which lives associated with the tubes of the bivalveBankia martensiin the fjords of the South Pacific Ocean in Chile. This species is characterized by a ribbon-like body, light brown colour, anterior region devoid of pigment, few eyes, no tentacles, pharynx in the anterior region of the body with few folds, independent gonopores anterior to the medial body line, seminal vesicle strongly muscularized, digitiform penian papilla oriented posteroanteriorly, a curled vagina, and a large Lang's vesicle ventral to the intestine. A phylogenetic analysis of the Euplanidae, based on morphological characters, is presented. With the dataset used, the family Euplanidae does not seem to be a monophyletic group. The new species is closely related toTaenioplana teredini(also discussed here) which presents life-habit characteristics that are similar to those of the new species.

Resuming published and own data, a revision of classification of Chaetognatha is presented. The family Sagittidae Claus & Grobben, 1905 is given a rank of subclass, Sagittiones, characterised, in particular, by the presence of two pairs of sac-like gelatinous structures or two pairs of fins. Besides the order Aphragmophora Tokioka, 1965, it contains the new order Biphragmosagittiformes ord. nov., which is a unique group of Chaetognatha with an unusual combination of morphological characters: the transverse muscles present in both the trunk and the tail sections of the body; the seminal vesicles simple, without internal complex compartments; the presence of two pairs of lateral fins. The only family assigned to the new order, Biphragmosagittidae fam. nov., contains two genera. Diagnoses of the two new genera, Biphragmosagitta gen. nov. (type species B. tarasovi sp. nov. and B. angusticephala sp. nov.) and Biphragmofastigata gen. nov. (type species B. fastigata sp. nov.), detailed descriptions and pictures of the three new species are presented.

New taxa of the family Ropalomeridae from Costa Rica are described, and additional records of ropalomerid flies fromMexico and Central America are provided. The new genus and species Acrocephalomyia zumbadoi can be easily distin-guished from all other ropalomerid genera by the following combination of characters: angular forward projection of head,absence of ocelli, flat face, bare arista, long scutum, and scutellum triangular-shaped and dorsally flattened with only onepair of apical bristles with bases approximated. The new species Ropalomera aterrima can be recognized from congenersby remarkable differences of the head, the shape of the scutellum, the absence of scutal vittae, fumose wings, and by theblack coloration of the body, ocellar bristles large, one postpronotal bristle, scutum without pollinose vittae and flat scutellum. Lenkokroeberia chryserea Prado and Kroeberia fuliginosa Lindner are newly confirmed for Costa Rica.

Land leeches in the family Haemadipsidae are mostly from the humid tropical rainforest habitats and habitually take blood from the body of human and other animals. In the present study, we report a new species, Sinospelaeobdella wulingensis sp. n., from caves in the northern subtropical Wuling Mountains of central-south China that feeds blood exclusively on cave-dwelling bats. Based on morphological characteristics, COI gene sequence divergence, and phylogenetic analysis, a new genus Sinospelaeobdella gen. n. is established for the new species, to which a previously described species Haemadipsa cavatuses Yang et al., 2009 is transferred as S. cavatuses comb. n. We also provided extended discussion on phylogenetic relationship within the “Tritetrabdellinae” clade uncovered in a previous study, DNA taxonomy, morphological and behavioral adaptions, biogeography, and possible involvement of Sinospelaeobdella gen. n. in bat transmitted diseases of public concerns.

Abstract The phylogenetic study of the deep-sea genus Bentheogennema is based on four molecular markers and 79 morphological characters. All four previously recognized species and two new species of Bentheogennema, representatives of all other genera and species groups of Benthesicymidae, and three outgroups were included in the analyses. We have examined and coded six major groups of morphological characters related to the carapace (three characters), the pleon and the telson (14), the mouthparts (nine), the armature of the pereopods (five), the thelycum (27) and the petasma (21). Results of morphological and molecular analyses were similar. Two species were transferred from Bentheogennema to other genera (for one of them a new genus was erected) and two new species of Bentheogennema were described. Three pelagic genera (Gennadas, Bentheogennema and a new genus) created a robust clade. The divergence of this clade is linked to ‘smoothening’ of the body (reduction of the branchiostegal spine on the carapace, reduction and loss of the dorsolateral spines and the end-piece on the telson) and elaboration of the copulatory structures. We provide amended diagnoses of these three pelagic genera and key to species of Bentheogennema.

Five species of the family Odiidae (Amphipoda), including four new species, are recorded from Japan: Metodius cyanomaculatus sp. nov.; M. leucomaculatus sp. nov.; Postodius albifacies sp. nov.; P. sanguineus sp. nov.; and Antarctodius japonicus Ariyama, 2011. Morphological characters and coloration of these species are described in detail. Metodius gen. nov. is established for the two new species and is characterized by the very short and bare palp of the maxilla 1 and the large gnathopod 2 propodus. Keys to the odiid genera and the Postodius species in the world are provided. The genera can be distinguished from one another by the shapes of maxilla 1, maxilliped, pereopod 7, and telson. The Postodius species differs in the shapes of gnathopod 2, and pereopods 3, 7. Female of A. japonicus is firstly recorded. In this species, the presence of an accessory flagellum and a gill on the coxa 7 is confirmed.

A new genus and species, Choneteuthis tongaensis gen. et sp. nov., is described from the waters around Tonga in the central South Pacific Ocean. The new genus does not clearly fit in any of the currently recognized subfamilies of the family Sepiolidae, justifying a reconsideration of the subfamilial subdivision of the family.

The genus Lauriea belongs to the family Galatheidae and is easily differentiated from other genera of the family by the endopod of the uropod being much wider than long and the dactyli of the walking legs being curved and strongly biunguiculate. Examination of many specimens collected during recent expeditions from Madagascar to French Polynesia and using morphological and molecular data revealed the existence of six species, five of them new, that are genetically distinct yet morphologically very similar. Furthermore, another new species, having a triunguiculate P2–4 dactyli, represents a new genus, Triodonthea.

AbstractEctoparasitic nematodes (Acugutturus, Vampyronema and Noctuidonema) of the family Acugutturidae from 13 species of Lepidoptera (moths) and one species of Blattodea (cockroaches) were collected, measured and analysed by discriminant analysis in order to identify conspecifics and to determine which morphological characters were useful in defining differences between nematodes on different host species. The position of the excretory pore posterior to the metacorpus clearly differentiates Acugutturus parasiticus from Noctuidonema and Vampyronema. Two populations of A. parasiticus on Periplaneta americana from the West Indian islands of St Lucia and Guadeloupe are conspecific. Nematodes resembling Vampyronema, collected from two genera of Sphingidae in Guadeloupe are characterised by extremely long stylets, equal to ca 37% of the body length, and may represent a new genus. Noctuidonema from four species of Spodoptera (Noctuidae) are conspecific. However, a somewhat different Noctuidonema from the noctuid Pseudaletia unipuncta may represent a new species, based primarily on its shorter stylet length. Simple spicule structure, a smaller V percentage, and a shorter stylet in Vampyronema are characters that best define its differences from Noctuidonema. Nematodes on the noctuids Anicla infecta and Eulepidotis addens probably represent two new species of Vampyronema. There was no clear differentiation between nematodes on the noctuids Mocis disseverans, M. latipes, Agrapha oxygramma and Orthodes crenulata, and they are all probably conspecific with V.dibolia. Thus far, Noctuidonema has been found only on the trifine noctuids Spodoptera and Pseudaletia, whereas Vampyronema has been found on both trifine and quadrifine noctuids. We found evidence for sequential evolution, but not co-evolution, between these ectoparasitic nematodes and their lepidopteran hosts.
