Ένα θέμα που εμφανίζεται με μεγάλη συχνότητα στα έγγραφα του οθωμανικού κράτους κατά τη διάρκεια του ελληνικού Αγώνα της Ανεξαρτησίας είναι οι αποτυχημένες προσπάθειες της Υψηλής Πύλης να κινητοποιήσει τους Αλβανούς πολέμαρχους/προύχοντες για να πολεμήσουν στις μάχες της ενάντια στους έλληνες επαναστάτες. Η πληθώρα των εγγράφων οφείλεται στο γεγονός ότι το οθωμανικό κράτος δεν είχε στρατό στην πραγματικότητα, αλλά ούτε και πολλά μέσα για να τον συγκεντρώσει κατά τη διάρκεια της επανάστασης. Θυμίζοντας έντονα τις συνθήκες που διέπουν τη διάλυση αρκετών αρχαίων αυτοκρατοριών, η Υψηλή Πύλη ήταν υποχρεωμένη να καταφύγει στην «αγορά βίας»,[i] της οποίας οι σημαντικότεροι προμηθευτές ήταν οι μουσουλμάνοι αλβανοί πολέμαρχοι. Μέχρι την άφιξη των αιγυπτιακών δυνάμεων το 1825, με την οποία συνδέεται το τελικό χρονολογικό όριο αυτής εδώ της μελέτης, το οθωμανικό κράτος βρέθηκε κυριολεκτικά στο έλεός τους προκειμένου να καταστείλει την ελληνική εξέγερση. Οι περισσότεροι ερευνητές της περιόδου τείνουν να υποτιμούν τον ρόλο του αλβανικού στοιχείου και έτσι αποτελεί άγνωστη πτυχή στην ιστοριογραφία του ελληνικού Αγώνα της Ανεξαρτησίας.[ii] Αυτό οφείλεται, μεταξύ άλλων, στο γεγονός ότι οι μουσουλμάνοι Αλβανοί αντιμετωπίζονται ως Τούρκοι –ονομάζονται Τουρκαλβανοί ή παραβλέπεται εντελώς η αλβανική τους ταυτότητα – ενώ ταυτόχρονα οι χριστιανοί Αλβανοί χαρακτηρίζονται ως Έλληνες, με αποτέλεσμα τα γεγονότα να παρουσιάζονται απλουστευτικά, ως ανταγωνισμός που αφορά φαινομενικά μόνο δύο αντίπαλες πλευρές. Ωστόσο, η πραγματική εικόνα είναι πολύ πιο περίπλοκη. Στο πεδίο της μάχης, ο πόλεμος για την ελληνική ανεξαρτησία ήταν ένας αγώνας εξουσίας ανάμεσα σε ένα πλήθος παικτών με αδιάκοπη αναδιάταξη των συμφερόντων και αναδιανομή της εξουσίας. Οι αιτίες για τις οποίες οι οθωμανικές ένοπλες δυνάμεις αντιμετώπισαν τόσο αντίξοες συνθήκες και οι Αλβανοί έπαιξαν τόσο σημαντικό ρόλο στον πόλεμο για την ελληνική ανεξαρτησία έχουν τις ρίζες τους στην προηγούμενη δεκαετία, η οποία αποτελεί μια από τις λιγότερο μελετημένες περιόδους της οθωμανικής ιστορίας. ---- [i] Δανείζομαι τις περισσότερες από τις έννοιες σχετικά με την στρατολόγηση μισθοφόρων από τη Sarah Percy, Mercenaries: The History of a Norm in International Relations (Νέα Υόρκη: Oxford University Press, 2007). Οι έλληνες ιστορικοί υποβαθμίζουν γενικά τον ρόλο των Αλβανών στον ελληνικό εθνικό αγώνα. Για παράδειγμα, στο άρθρο του Στέφανου Π. Παπαγεωργίου –που μπορεί να θεωρηθεί πρόσφατη σύνοψη της ελληνικής επικρατέστερης αφήγησης– δεν αναφέρεται η αλβανική ταυτότητα του Ομέρ Βρυώνη, ο οποίος παρουσιάζεται ως απλός διοικητής που ήταν πιστός στο οθωμανικό κράτος. Επιπλέον, ο Παπαγεωργίου δεν αναφέρει ότι η Τρίπολη παραχωρήθηκε στους εξεγερμένους Έλληνες από έναν αλβανό πολέμαρχο, τον Έλμας Μέτσο, και ότι οι άμαχοι Τούρκοι σφαγιάστηκαν μετά την αποχώρηση των Αλβανών. Μια τέτοια άποψη ταυτίζει μεταξύ τους τους Τούρκους και τους Αλβανούς, ή τους «τουρκαλβανούς», όπως τους αποκαλεί, αγνοώντας τον ιδιαίτερο και ιδιότυπο ρόλο των Αλβανών σε όλη την Ελληνική Επανάσταση.
