The Bone Bed was composed of the skeletons, parts of skeletons, and isolated bones, of about 190 bison (Fig. 1). During our excavations, we recorded a total of 143 skulls. While Olsen and Chubbuck kept no record during their excavations, they estimate that they found about 50 skulls, a figure which appears reasonable in view of the volume they dug and the area in which their excavations were centered. Hence the suggested total of about 190 animals.Five hundred three bone units were recorded during our 2 seasons of excavation at the Olsen-Chubbuck site (Table 1). A proportionate number of units must also have occurred in that part of the site dug by Olsen and Chubbuck, so that, using the ratio estimated above, somewhere near 670 units probably comprised the total bone bed.As previously explained (see Recording), each articulated skeleton or segment of a skeleton was recorded as a single unit. In addition, skulls were also recorded as units. We did this because, from early in our first season of excavation, we believed that most, if not all, such articulated segments represented those parts that had been cut off by the Indians during the butchering. That is to say, that the Indians followed a fairly standard procedure in cutting up a bison, and that when the meat had been removed, the bones were discarded, still held together by sinews. We believed that an analysis of such units would provide direct information on the butchering techniques of the Indians, on the selection of choice parts, and perhaps on the use made of the parts. To a large extent, these hypotheses have been validated.

In 149 B.C. the tribune L. Calpurnius Piso proposed a law which was to have momentous consequences for the legal, political and administrative history of the Roman republic. It was his lex de rebus repetundis which first established the practice of trial before a quaestio perpetua, a jury, drawn from a panel of jurors who had always to be available, which became the standard procedure for criminal cases in the late republic. For over fifty years, from the first tribunate of C. Gracchus in 123 to the passing of the Lex Aurelia in 70, such courts were to provide a political storm-centre as various political figures attempted for their own ends to alter the criteria for the selection of the iudices who manned the juries. Moreover, from the late second century B.C. down to at least the second century A.D., the process de repetundis formed the most important means that was available to Rome's provincial subjects of bringing an action against a provincial governor for maladministration.

Sustainability of coastal areas requires the development of a standard procedure for the selection of equitable defence solutions and the design optimization of existing defences in order to minimize the impact on the environment and maximize positive effects such as species biodiversity and structure colonization. The aim of this paper is to propose a combined method, based on numerical simulations and on collection of ecological data in the field, to provide indications for an environmental friendly construction of breakwaters. This method is applied and tested against the case study of Elmer, UK, where information on existing species and their abundance related to hydrodynamic effects induced by the breakwaters

Pharyngocutaneous fistula is a readily encountered complication that occurs after surgery for laryngopharyngeal cancer. The development of pharyngocutaneous fistula increases hospitalization, delays postoperative adjuvant treatment, and can lead to serious complications such as wound infection and carotid artery rupture. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is actively being performed as a standard procedure for surgery of pharyngeal and laryngeal cancers. Many reports verified that TORS is advantageous in terms of perioperative outcomes such as decreased hospitalization and reduced rate of postoperative complications, free flap reconstruction, and tracheostomy or gastrostomy tube dependence relative to open surgery. However, careful selection of patients is mandatory and there are some critical points to consider in optimal treatment outcomes. Recently, we experienced a 47-year-old patient with tonsillar cancer who underwent lateral oropharyngectomy by TORS and radical neck dissection. Unfortunately, multiple pharyngocutaneous fistulae occurred following postoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). Multiple phrayngocutaneous fistulae following TORS and postoperative CCRT have not been reported in the literature. Therefore, we report this case with a brief discussion supported by a review of the relevant literature.

Abstract We model a decentralized, dynamic auction market platform in which a continuum of buyers and sellers participate in simultaneous, single-unit auctions each period. Our model accounts for the endogenous entry of agents and the impact of intertemporal optimization on bids. We estimate the structural primitives of our model using Kindle sales on eBay. We find that just over one-third of Kindle auctions on eBay result in an inefficient allocation with deadweight loss amounting to 14% of total possible market surplus. We also find that partial centralization—for example, running half as many 2-unit, uniform-price auctions each day—would eliminate a large fraction of the inefficiency, but yield lower seller revenues. Our results also highlight the importance of understanding platform composition effects—selection of agents into the market—in assessing the implications of market redesign. We also prove that the equilibrium of our model with a continuum of buyers and sellers is an approximate equilibrium of the analogous model with a finite number of agents.

New policies and rules oblige the European markets to enroll as one single unit. Improving each market unit increases the competitiveness of the European unit market to compete globally and to attract international investors. Investor’s criteria have changed within the selection of place. Now investors are looking for cities and not countries; they are escaping from the high investing cost of London and Paris, to benefit the young talent of human resources, and lowest rentals are at Lisbon. Europe market is based on cities rather than countries, investors are focusing on urbans where there are no competitors, and logistics are available.

An unfortunate consequence of the high magnification achieved in electron microscopy is the inability to scan large areas of tissue or locate structures which are small and of infrequent occurrence. The standard procedure is to section repeatedly, hoping that an area of interest will be encountered. However, this time-consuming practice can be avoided by the use of a special embedding platform which permits the embedment of tissue for examination by light microscopy prior to sectioning.Aldehyde-fixed tissues are cut into 10μm sections with a Vibratome or into 20-30μm sections with a Sorvall TC-2 tissue sectioner. At this point optimal sections may be selected on the basis of a particular morphological feature, for which a light methylene blue or Alcian blue stain may be employed; or selection may be based upon activity of a cytochemical enzyme stain, particularly one which involves 3,3'-diaminobenzidine (DAB).

Abstract Background: The PJI is a severe complication in the field of arthroplasty.Despite the rising number of primary joint replacements, no therapeutic standard has been established for the treatment of PJI yet. Methods: A survey on the principles of treatment of PJI in Germany wasconducted. A total of 515 EndoProthetikZentren were included, resulting in a response rate of 100%.Results: For early infections 97.6% of the centers use DAIR. A one-stage exchange was implemented by less than 50% of the centers. If implemented, this treatment entails a prior selection of patients for a successful treatment. The two-stage exchange is performed in all centers, and most centers proceed with the implantation of a cemented spacer between stages. 75% of the centers proceed with a center-based concept for the treatment of PJI.Conclusion: The rising number of primary joint replacements underlines the importance of developing standards and harmonized definitions for the treatment of PJI. These standards have not yet been fully achieved. The most relevant treatment options in Germany are displayed. The two-stage revision with a cemented spacer is the most widely implemented treatment option in Germany. This summary of principles could serve as a basis for the development of standardized treatment guidelines and definitions.

Pecker:The topic to be considered today is the continuous spectrum of certain stars, whose variability we attribute to a pulsation of some part of their structure. Obviously, this continuous spectrum provides a test of the pulsation theory to the extent that the continuum is completely and accurately observed and that we can analyse it to infer the structure of the star producing it. The continuum is one of the two possible spectral observations; the other is the line spectrum. It is obvious that from studies of the continuum alone, we obtain no direct information on the velocity fields in the star. We obtain information only on the thermodynamic structure of the photospheric layers of these stars–the photospheric layers being defined as those from which the observed continuum directly arises. So the problems arising in a study of the continuum are of two general kinds: completeness of observation, and adequacy of diagnostic interpretation. I will make a few comments on these, then turn the meeting over to Oke and Whitney.

Abstract Some of the foundations of Heyes’ radical reasoning seem to be based on a fractional selection of available evidence. Using an ethological perspective, we argue against Heyes’ rapid dismissal of innate cognitive instincts. Heyes’ use of fMRI studies of literacy to claim that culture assembles pieces of mental technology seems an example of incorrect reverse inferences and overlap theories pervasive in cognitive neuroscience.
