Abstractω Centauri is by far the most massive globular star cluster in the Milky Way, and possibly the remnant of a dwarf galaxy. As such, it contains a large number of variable stars of different classes. Here we report on an extensive, wide-field time-series study of ω Cen in the J and KS bands, which has allowed us to study the near-IR period-luminosity relations for different variability classes, including the first such relations for the SX Phoenicis stars.

AbstractDwarf galaxies in the local group provide a unique astrophysical laboratory. Despite their proximity some of these systems still lack reliable distance determinations as well as studies of their stellar content and star formation history. We present first results of our survey of variable stars in a sample of six local group dwarf irregular galaxies. Taking the Leo A dwarf galaxy as an example we describe observational strategies and data reduction. We discuss the light curves of two newly found Cepheids and place them into the context of a previously derived P-L relation. Finally we discuss the LPV content of Leo A.

AbstractWe present preliminary results of the variability survey in the field of the globular cluster NGC 4833. We observed all 34 variable stars known in the cluster. In addition, we have found two new SX Phoenicis stars, one new RR Lyrae star, twelve new eclipsing systems mostly of the W Ursae Majoris type, nine new variable red giants, and ten new field-stars showing irregular variations. Properties of RR Lyrae stars indicate that NGC 4833 is an Oosterhoff's type II globular cluster.

Abstract We briefly outline the history of the General Catalogue of Variable Stars (GCVS) and the New Catalogue of Suspected Variable Stars (NSV catalogue). Recently, we have completed a revision of the NSV catalogue. Positional information was checked for all its stars and, in many cases, new photometric data were added. As a result, one third of all NSV stars have been transferred to the GCVS. Having determined equatorial coordinates for variable stars in globular star clusters, we began to add them to the GCVS. Two Name-lists published so far contain more than 1700 variable stars in 36 globular clusters; an additional Name-list (about 900 variable stars in 27 globular clusters) will be published before the end of 2021. We discuss problem cases in the literature and in the Catalogue of Variable Stars in Galactic Globular Clusters revealed during our preparation of the Name-lists. The future of traditional catalogues of variable stars (GCVS; AAVSO Variable-star Data Index VSX) is discussed.

This project was initiated in 1985 by James Nemec (University of Washington) and Nicholas Suntzeff (C.T.I.O.). The goal was to study the system of ∼600 variable stars in the Sculptor dwarf galaxy. In 1987 the author became the recipient of the plate collection, which formed the basis for his Ph.D. dissertation. In this paper preliminary results are presented. Briefly, 612 stars were studied, of which 432 are van Agt (1978) stars and 180 are newly discovered variable stars. A total of 381 stars are confirmed variables. Most of these are RR Lyraes, but many anomalous Cepheids and some candidate eclipsing variables were also found. Several candidate double-mode RR Lyrae stars were also identified. The mean period of the ab-type RR Lyrae stars is 0.60±0.08 day, and the mean period of the c-type stars is 0.35±0.03 day, not unlike the mean periods of other nearby dwarf galaxies.

A pilot survey conducted at the Lookout Observatory has confirmed seven faint (V ~ 13 to 17) variables in the region of Kepler-76b that were recently discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). The ATLAS survey identified 315,000 probably variables within its wide-field survey in 2018. The faintness (down to r ~ 18) and small amplitudes (down to 0.02 mag) included in these candidates makes external validation difficult. Our confirmation of seven such variable stars gives credibility to the ATLAS list. Further, the agreement between various surveys and LO data validates the use of our new survey for variable star and exoplanet research.

During a routine study of the variable stars of Messier 13 (NGC 6205 = Cl 1639+365) we have discovered the variability of L199 (TYC 2588-1386-2), a red giant star member of the cluster: using the photometric data –in V band– obtained in the 2019 and 2020 campaigns we have verified its variability. Data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Deras et al. (2019) were utilized to determine its type of variability and period estimation: our data suggest that it is a semiregular red giant, similar to the other variables of this type of the cluster, whose cycles of photometric variation are not identical; we derived a period of ~27 days (although without a regular periodicity) and an amplitude smaller: 0.08 ± 0.03 magnitudes in V band although they may be somewhat larger or smaller. With this discovery the cluster now has 63 variable stars.
