Preliminary results for the photometry of a photograph of the inner zodiacal light taken aboard Saliout 6 are reported. The Very Wide Field Camera to be flown aboard Spacelab 1 is described and the program of observations of the zodiacal light is presented.

Three-dimensional computerized imaging is a new modality of radiological imaging. This new technique transforms the two-dimensional slices of bi-plane CT into a three-dimensional picture by a computer’s monitor adjusted to the system. This system enables the physician to rotate the angle of viewing of the desired region to any desired angle. Moreover, this system can delete certain features of different densities from the picture, such as silicone implants, thus improving visualization. Our preliminary results using this technique are presented. The advantages, pitfalls, and suggested future applications of this new technique in hand surgery are discussed.

We have obtained CMR photometry for a roughly 1° square region centered on NGC 5128. Preliminary results indicate that the limiting magnitude of the images is ≳ 1 magnitude fainter than the peak of the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) at R ⋍ 21.

A new Hα survey of the Magellanic Clouds which is being carried out on fine-grained Tech-Pan emulsion with the UK 1.2m Schmidt Telescope will have the best combination of depth and resolution of any that cover such a wide area in and around the Magellanic Clouds. Preliminary results show that the films will provide identifications of new emission-line stars and nebulae.

Abstract This review (162 references) focuses on two-dimensional carbon materials, which include graphene as well as its allotropes varying in size, number of layers, and defects, for their application in electrochemical sensors. Many preparation methods are known to yield two-dimensional carbon materials which are often simply addressed as graphene, but which show huge variations in their physical and chemical properties and therefore on their sensing performance. The first section briefly reviews the most promising as well as the latest achievements in graphene synthesis based on growth and delamination techniques, such as chemical vapor deposition, liquid phase exfoliation via sonication or mechanical forces, as well as oxidative procedures ranging from chemical to electrochemical exfoliation. Two-dimensional carbon materials are highly attractive to be integrated in a wide field of sensing applications. Here, graphene is examined as recognition layer in electrochemical sensors like field-effect transistors, chemiresistors, impedance-based devices as well as voltammetric and amperometric sensors. The sensor performance is evaluated from the material’s perspective of view and revealed the impact of structure and defects of the 2D carbon materials in different transducing technologies. It is concluded that the performance of 2D carbon-based sensors is strongly related to the preparation method in combination with the electrical transduction technique. Future perspectives address challenges to transfer 2D carbon-based sensors from the lab to the market.

Abstract. Measurements of limb-scattered sunlight from the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS-LP) can be used to obtain vertical profiles of ozone in the stratosphere. In this paper we describe a two-dimensional, or tomographic, retrieval algorithm for OMPS-LP where variations are retrieved simultaneously in altitude and the along-orbital-track dimension. The algorithm has been applied to measurements from the center slit for the full OMPS-LP mission to create the publicly available University of Saskatchewan (USask) OMPS-LP 2D v1.0.2 dataset. Tropical ozone anomalies are compared with measurements from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), where differences are less than 5 % of the mean ozone value for the majority of the stratosphere. Examples of near-coincident measurements with MLS are also shown, and agreement at the 5 % level is observed for the majority of the stratosphere. Both simulated retrievals and coincident comparisons with MLS are shown at the edge of the polar vortex, comparing the results to a traditional one-dimensional retrieval. The one-dimensional retrieval is shown to consistently overestimate the amount of ozone in areas of large horizontal gradients relative to both MLS and the two-dimensional retrieval.

Two-dimensional velocity fields have been used to determine the dark matter properties of a sample of barred galaxies taken from the BIMA Survey of Nearby Galaxies (SONG). Preliminary results indicate that the maximal disk model is not appropriate in several galaxies in our sample, but higher resolution results will be needed to confirm this.
