AbstractUltraviolet photometric observations by OAO-A2 were made of α2 CVn covering the entire 5ḍ5 period of this magnetic Ap variable. The light curves ranging from 1250A to 3330 A indicate the dominant role of rare-earth line-blanketing in redistributing flux. In a broad depression of the continuum covering 2300 A to 2600 A scanner observations identify strong lines of Eu III as major contributors to this feature. At maximum intensity of the rare-earth lines the ultraviolet continuum shortward of 2900 A is greatly diminished while the longer wavelength regions into the visual become brighter. Thus, the light variations in α2 CVn are: due to the variable strong line-blanketing by the abundant rare-earth elements.

On behalf of the International AGN Watch, I report on the results of intensive ultraviolet spectral monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783. The nucleus of NGC 3783 was observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite on a regular basis for a total of seven months, once every 4 days for the first 172 days and once every other day for the final 50 days. Significant variability was observed in both continuum and emission-line fluxes. The light curves for the continuum fluxes exhibited two well-defined local minima or “dips,” the first lasting ≲ 20 days and the second ≲ 4 days, with additional episodes of relatively rapid flickering of approximately the same amplitude. As in the case of NGC 5548 (the only other Seyfert galaxy that has been the subject of such an intensive, sustained monitoring effort), the largest continuum variations were seen at the shortest wavelengths, so that the continuum became “harder” when brighter. The variations in the continuum occurred simultaneously at all wavelengths (Δt < 2 days). Generally, the amplitude of variability of the emission lines was lower than (or comparable to) that of the continuum. Apart from Mg II (which varied little) and N V (which is relatively weak and badly blended with Lyα) the light curves of the emission lines are very similar to the continuum light curves, in each case with a small systematic delay or “lag.” As for NGC 5548, the highest ionization lines seem to respond with shorter lags than the lower ionization lines. The lags found for NGC 3783 are considerably shorter than those obtained for NGC 5548, with values of (formally) ∼ 0 days for He II+O III], and ∼ 4 days for Lyα, and C IV. The data further suggest lags of ∼ 4 days for Si IV+O IV], and 8–30 days for Si III]+C III]. Uncertainties in these quantities are likely to be of order 2–3 days for the stronger features (Lyα, C IV), and 3–4 days for the weaker ones (He II+O III], Si IV+O IV], Si III]+C III]). Mg II lagged the 1460 Å continuum by ∼ 9 days, although this result depends on the method of measuring the line flux, and may in fact be due to variability of the underlying Fe II lines. Correlation analysis further shows that the power density spectrum contains substantial unresolved power over time scales of ≲ 2 days, and that the character of the continuum variability may change with time.

We present the preliminary results of an 8-month monitoring campaign carried out on 6 AGN during the period December 1991 – July 1992. All but one of our targets showed continuum and/or line variability. The data were obtained using the 2D-Prutti + Cassegrain spectrograph at the CTIO 1.0-m telescope, and reduced following standard procedures. The slit width was 5″ and the nuclear spectra were extracted in a 10″ aperture. The wavelength coverage is 3500–7200Å, with 8Å resolution. The data were flux calibrated using standard stars and then normalized using the [O III] λ5007Å line flux for each object. NGC 6814: our spectra reveal that this object is still in a low state of activity and within the S/N ratio of our data, no variability was observed during this campaign. The stellar population is dominant in the nuclear spectrum and a synthesis using the star cluster library of Bica (1988) indicates a mainly old (∼ 86% of the continuum flux at 5870Å due to a population with age ≥ 10 Gyr), [Z/Z⊙] ≥ 0.3 stellar content, with an intrinsic reddening of E(B–V)=0.20. NGC 3227: using an off-nuclear spectrum corresponding to the two 5″×10″ regions 20.4″ E/W of the nucleus, we obtained also a mainly old (77% at 5870Å with age ≥ 10 Gyr), [Z/Z⊙]=0.3) synthetic stellar population, which contributes ∼ 43% of the nuclear light at 5600Å. The cross correlation of the 4245Å continuum and Hβ light curves results in a 18±3 -day lag. IC 4329A: our data show evidence of variability as a slow and constant increase in both continuum and lines fluxes, but no isolated event was detected. ESO141-G55: the light curves show small variations in the continuum, but no noticeable line variability. Akn 120 and Fairall 9: the data consists of two sets of spectra, separated by ∼ 6 months. Within each set little or no variability was detected, but strong line and continuum variations occurred between them.

Abstract Scientific findings have indicated that psychological and social factors are the driving forces behind most chronic benign pain presentations, especially in a claim context, and are relevant to at least three of the AMA Guides publications: AMA Guides to Evaluation of Disease and Injury Causation, AMA Guides to Work Ability and Return to Work, and AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment. The author reviews and summarizes studies that have identified the dominant role of financial, psychological, and other non–general medicine factors in patients who report low back pain. For example, one meta-analysis found that compensation results in an increase in pain perception and a reduction in the ability to benefit from medical and psychological treatment. Other studies have found a correlation between the level of compensation and health outcomes (greater compensation is associated with worse outcomes), and legal systems that discourage compensation for pain produce better health outcomes. One study found that, among persons with carpal tunnel syndrome, claimants had worse outcomes than nonclaimants despite receiving more treatment; another examined the problematic relationship between complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and compensation and found that cases of CRPS are dominated by legal claims, a disparity that highlights the dominant role of compensation. Workers’ compensation claimants are almost never evaluated for personality disorders or mental illness. The article concludes with recommendations that evaluators can consider in individual cases.

The review article presents data on the prevalence of respiratory allergy - allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma in southern Russia, published over the past decades. The dominant role of pollen allergy is shown in almost the entire southern region of Russia. In the Chechen Republic, sensitization to house dust mites and grass pollen was found in patients with respiratory allergy equally (51.1 and 52.5, respectively), whereas ragweed and mugwort sensitization was 3 times less (26.6 and 20.7, respectively) compared with the neighboring regions of southern Russia. These data demonstrate climate-geographical, environmental and other regional features in the prevalence of respiratory allergies.

After had being carried out nationalization and hostility against west countries, the New Order regime made important decision to change Indonesia economic direction from etatism system to free market economy. A set of policies were taken in order private sector could play major role in economic. However, when another economic sectors were reformed substantially, effords to reform the State Owned Enterprises had failed. The State Owned Enterprise, in fact, remained to play dominant role like early years of guided democracy era. Role of the State Owned Enterprises was more and more powerfull). The main problem of reforms finally lied on reality that vested interest of bureaucrats (civil or military) was so large that could’nt been overcome.

The concluding chapter highlights how the cultural history of graphic signs of authority in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages encapsulated the profound transformation of political culture in the Mediterranean and Europe from approximately the fourth to ninth centuries. It also reflects on the transcendent sources of authority in these historical periods, and the role of graphic signs in highlighting this connection. Finally, it warns that, despite the apparent dominant role of the sign of the cross and cruciform graphic devices in providing access to transcendent protection and support in ninth-century Western Europe, some people could still employ alternative graphic signs deriving from older occult traditions in their recourse to transcendent powers.
