The role of the Schmidt telescopes in the discovery of the Quasi Stellar Objects and of the Active Galactic Nuclei, and in the understanding of their properties was and continues to be of the greatest importance. Thousands of Radio-Sources have been quickly associated to their optical counterparts thanks to the worldwide availability of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey plates and charts and more recently of the films of the ESO B Survey. Other thousands of QSOs and AGNs devoid of radio emission are found by the large Schmidts nowaday in operation. This wealth of data give fundamental cosmological knowledge and insight in the physical processes occuring in these objects. I'll concentrate in this Review on two specific topics, namely on the discovery techniques and on the study of the optical variability. To both subjects, the 67/92 cm Schmidt telescope here at Asiago has made significant contributions. The first topic is treated in several excellent papers, such as the one by M. Smith (1978) and the one by P. Veron (1983); the material presented in the second part is largely new. In the following, I'll use rather loosely the terms QSOs and AGNs to designate a variety of objects including Quasars (those QSOs in catalogs of Radio-Sources), high-redshift compact galaxies with emission lines, BL LACset similia.

ABSTRACT Red quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) are a subset of the luminous end of the cosmic population of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), most of which are reddened by intervening dust along the line of sight towards their central engines. In recent work from our team, we developed a systematic technique to select red QSOs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and demonstrated that they have distinctive radio properties using the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimetres radio survey. Here we expand our study using low-frequency radio data from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). With the improvement in depth that LoTSS offers, we confirm key results: Compared to a control sample of normal ‘blue’ QSOs matched in redshift and accretion power, red QSOs have a higher radio detection rate and a higher incidence of compact radio morphologies. For the first time, we also demonstrate that these differences arise primarily in sources of intermediate radio loudness: Radio-intermediate red QSOs are × 3 more common than typical QSOs, but the excess diminishes among the most radio-loud systems and the most radio-quiet systems in our study. We develop Monte Carlo simulations to explore whether differences in star formation could explain these results, and conclude that, while star formation is an important source of low-frequency emission among radio-quiet QSOs, a population of AGN-driven compact radio sources is the most likely cause for the distinct low-frequency radio properties of red QSOs. Our study substantiates the conclusion that fundamental differences must exist between the red and normal blue QSO populations.

A simple estimate of the photometric redshift would prove invaluable to forthcoming continuum surveys on the next generation of large radio telescopes, as well as mitigating the existing bias towards the most optically bright sources. While there is a well-known correlation between the near-infrared K-band magnitude and redshift for galaxies, we find the K − z relation to break down for samples dominated by quasi-stellar objects. We hypothesise that this is due to the additional contribution to the near-infrared flux by the active galactic nucleus, and, as such, the K-band magnitude can only provide a lower limit to the redshift in the case of active galactic nuclei, which will dominate the radio surveys. From a large optical dataset, we find a tight relationship between the rest-frame (U − K)/(W2 − FUV) colour ratio and spectroscopic redshift over a sample of 17 000 sources, spanning z ≈ 0.1−5. Using the observed-frame ratios of (U − K)/(W2 − FUV) for redshifts of z ≲ 1, (I − W2)/(W3 − U) for 1 ≲ z ≲ 3, and (I − W2.5)/(W4 − R) for z ≳ 3, where W2.5 is the λ = 8.0 μm magnitude and the appropriate redshift ranges are estimated from the W2 (4.5 μm) magnitude, we find this to be a robust photometric redshift estimator for quasars. We suggest that the rest-frame U − K colour traces the excess flux from the AGN over this wide range of redshifts, although the W2 − FUV colour is required to break the degeneracy.

AbstractVSOP, VLBI Space Observatory Programme, is an approved space VLBI programme of ISAS for the study of very compact radio sources with the synthesized aperture of 30,000 km diameter, by connecting an orbiting radio observatory with ground radiotelescopes. The VSOP satellite carrying 10 m antenna with 1.6, 5, and 22 GHz band receivers will be launched in early 1995 by M-V rocket of ISAS into an eccentric orbit with 20,000 km in apogee height. The tracking network will be formed for the satellite orbit determination, phase transfer and IF down-link. VSOP aims imaging capability with best resolution of 0.0001 arc second in 22 GHz band. Imaging of active galactic nuclei, star forming regions and stellar objects, and radioastrometry are main scientific targets.

One of the fundamental properties of astrophysical magnetic fields is their ability to change topology through reconnection and in doing so, to release magnetic energy, sometimes violently. In this work, we review recent results on the role of magnetic reconnection and associated heating and particle acceleration in jet/accretion disk systems, namely young stellar objects (YSOs), microquasars, and active galactic nuclei (AGNs).

Considerable asymmetries in jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN) and associated double radio sources can be caused by an inhomogeneous interstellar medium of the host galaxy. These asymmetries can easily be estimated by 1D propagation models, but hydrodynamical simulations have shown that the actual asymmetries can be considerably larger. With a set of smaller-scale hydrodynamical simulations we examine these asymmetries, and find they are typically a factor of ~ 3 larger than in 1D models. We conclude that, at high redshift, large asymmetries in radio sources are expected in gas-rich galaxies with a clumpy interstellar medium.

Clarke, Bolton, and Shimmins (1966) have recently suggested identifications for 138 of the radio sources listed in the Parkes catalogue for declinations 0� to +20� (Day, Shimmins, Ekers, and Cole 1966). The identifications were made from inspection of the Palomar Sky Survey plates in areas 2' arc square centred on the catalogue positions. In general, identifications were suggested only for galaxies or possible quasi-stellar objects brighter than 17m . 5, in order to avoid the possibility of chance coincidences. Where objects fainter than 17m . 5 were suggested, position data of higher accuracy were available, due principally to unpublished measurements by Shimmins, Clarke, and Ekers with the 210 ft telescope.

Identifications are suggested for 59 radio sources from the resurvey of declination zone �4�, 27 with galaxies and 32 with stellar objects; 19 of the latter are confirmed as quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). The identifications were made from the Palomar Sky Survey prints plus supplementary plates taken with the Palomar and U.K. Schmidt telescopes and the Anglo-Australian 3�9 m telescope.
